View 2 RepliesI was running 10.04 LTS and had decided to stick to the LTS versions as I'm now running my machine as a server and don't want to be updating regularly.Every time I logged in via SSH I got a message telling me there where packages to update including a security update. So I did a search to find out how to perform an update on Ubuntu server from the command line.What I found was to do this:sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get dist-upgradeAfter doing that I rebooted but now my machine gives me this message:
init: ureadahead-other main process (794) terminated with status 4Your disk drives are being checked for errors, this may take some timePress C to cancel all checks currently inprogressI'm not pressing C yet and leaving it alone to finish, but I noticed when the machine booted that one of the options for booting talked about Ubuntu 10.10, so I'm worried that I've updated from 10.04 LTS to 10.10 by accident?
I'm relatively new to using Ubuntu. I'm currently using Karmic, and got an error message when trying to update packages

I did the UPGRADE from Karmic Koala to Lucid, and everything was going well. But now I've been having problems with the UBUNTU UPDATE tool for the last 2 weeks. Every time I try to do an update check on the packages, I get the following message:Failed to fetch http:[url]....Release Unable to find expected entry deb-src/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.I've tried changing the servers to MAIN and others, and still no way to solve it. I've also checked for other posts, but haven't found a solution yet. Here's my SOURCES LIST (gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list)# See http:[url].... for how to upgrade to # newer versions of the distribution.

I am moving from Fedora on this particular computer and I was wondering if I install something like VLC media player, will the Auto Software update look for new releases it they come out?
In Fedora yum and the software updater will look for updates on packages that are installed from other repositories and just wondering if Ubuntu has the same function.
I have not been able to update in over a month. I get a message that says "Local file conflict between packages"
When I click on More Details, I get:

View 7 Replies View RelatedI currently have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 (The beta) running on my Laptop. I want to know if it's possible to get 11.04 (Full) through the update manager? If so, how? Secondly, if I wanted to just go back to 10.10, could i install it over the current 11.04? I don't want to copy files over or anything like that, just a fresh start.

I have the package "xvidcap" (Screen recorder) installed in Ubuntu, the problem I have is the version I have installed is an older version and there is a newer version avaliable, but I don't want to install the newer version as this breaks some functionality regarding screen capturing e.g. audio capturing. But each time I run Update Manager the package appears in the list to be upgraded.
Is there anyway to flag the package as do not upgrade or something to make it not appear in Update Manager or at least have it greyed out so the checkbox isn't automatically checked each time update manager is ran?
I started using ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my Dell Studio 15 laptop. Installing ubuntu has never been this easy! I used CD which used WUBIInstaller to install Ubuntu. Then I restarted my machine and selected Ubuntu from 'OS selection screen'.
I connected to my wireless broadband in few minutes and found a pop-up of 'update manager' showing 305 new updates to be download and to be installed. I installed all updates worth 370 MB and in middle got an pop-up of GRUB telling me to configure GRUB on some path. I just selected that path and clicked on FORWARD button.Then installation of updates got over and it asked me to restart machine. I restarted machine but on OS selection screen,when i selected Ubuntu it didn't boot Ubuntu but instead machine restarted again. I'm not able to boot into Ubuntu.
I started having connection issues after last upgrade.. how can i check and rollback some updates? 10.10 netbook
ps. there's no History in Ubuntu Software Center
I already checked the preferences of UM but the filtering is somewhat awkward -- i.e. you have choice to EITHER install silently security updates OR be notified about all updates. One does not exclude the other, but for UM apparently it does.
But I have similar yet different need -- be notified about ONLY security updates (so when I click to show the updates, I will see only them). The rest of the updates should be ignored -- unless the update is required by the other, security update package.
I am helping a friend (remotely) and she has a problem on the laptop which prevents doing any updates. The error message is Could not initialise the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package information. Please report this bug for the 'update-manager' package and try to include the following error message:
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-updates_restricted_binary-amd64_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

Sometime during the morning of Feb 23, 2010, I accepted Update Manager's updates on both my desktop and my laptop, both of which are running Karmic and both of which have been regularly updated by Update Manager. Before the updates, which I think I saw included an update to CUPS, my Brother MFC-8820D printer had been running satisfactorily.
Since the updates, all the printer yields, in response to my attempts to print from either my desktop or my laptop, is the following six lines:
ERROR NAME;
configuration error
COMMAND;
setpagedevice
OPERAND STACK;
--dicttype---
Assuming I'm correct that CUPS was updated on Feb 23, is there some way to find out what the latest CUPS update involved, and/or how to return to a prior version?
When running Update Manager I am given an error message and it won't complete the update. I tried uninstalling the program clementine.
