Ubuntu :: Permanently Changing Song Info In RhythmBox

Jun 19, 2011

I've got Rhythmbox set to automatically draw songs from two folders. Everytime I start the program up, it builds the library fresh from the folders, so any changes I've made to track numbers, song titles, artists, etc is not retained from the previous section. Is there a way to permanently change this time of info in Rhythmbox, or is the another decent Linux music player that has this capability? Btw, I have Gnome.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: [10.10] Searching Song In Rhythmbox

Nov 22, 2010

I used to open Rhythmbox and click on the playlist. Then I typed a song's name and the chosen song would appear highlighted on the playlist.

However, since I upgraded to Maverick when I repeat that same procedure Rhythmbox will search for an artist containing whatever I typed instead of a song's title containing it.

I want the old feature back. I don't know if I'm being clear...

Ubuntu :: Editing Song Info In MP3 And Other Audio File Formats?

Jun 20, 2010

How can I edit the song info found in MP3 files and other audio file formats in Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit other then using Rhythmbox?

It's a pain to use Rhythmbox to edit the artist, album, year, Genre and other info of each song because you have to find the song by it name and then change the info. There is no way to put it in a view as folder or drive name or partition so you can simply go to where the files them selves are on the drive and edit mutiple files at the same time without having to search for each song individuly.

In XP all you need to do is right click and select properties and then edit the info there but in Linux all you can do is view the info under properties.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Delete Song From Rhythmbox Over Samba Share

Jul 29, 2010

I just moved all my songs over to my samba share server. I've been meaning to do it for a while and I finally did. Before that I had all my songs locally and if I needed to delete something I didn't want I could do it straight from Rhythmbox as I was listening to it (instead of tediously going through a file browser and manually deleting it).

However, now that I've put everything on to the samba share (which I've mapped to /home/chris/Music in my fstab as CIFS) I cannot delete anything from Rhythmbox. I get an "Operation not supported by backend" error. However, I can delete, copy, paste, create and do anything else fine in nuatilus, windows explorer or a terminal from any computer.

Why would I be getting this error? I'm 99.9% sure it's not a samba issue. Is it possible that Rhythmbox cannot handle remote shares except reading from them? The only workaround I can think of is to keep files both locally and on the samba share and to also create a two way sync between the two root "Music" folders. Anything updated or deleted on either end would be populated across the other. But my point here is that I shouldn't have to. I would like to just keep it simple, plus the point of having the samba share is to free up space on my local end as well as making all the songs available over the network.

Ubuntu :: RhythmBox Visual Effects Freeze When Song Changes

Feb 19, 2011

Rhythmbox 0.13.1 on Ubuntu 10.10. So far, I tested my favourite plugin "jess plugin" and the standard plugin "goom", it appears on both. After the visualisation freezes, it isn't possible to start it again unless rhythmbox is restarted. (But the rest of the program keeps on working at least.) How to avoid that? It doesn't happen in totem... (But I want to use my rhythmbox library).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox And Banshee Both Crash Immediately After Playing Song / Fix It?

Jan 20, 2011

Both Banshee and Rhythmbox crash, leaving a segmentation fault in the terminal, after playing a song for less than a second. I do manage to get some sound before they crash. This problem seems to have begun only a couple of days ago after doing an update. Unfortunately I was playing playing around with moving my music collection to an NFS share around the same time as the update so I can't be sure which action it was that broke music playback.

Because both Banshee and Rhythymbox are affected and showing identical behaviour I think the problem is gstreamer. Reinstalling everything I could find in synaptic related to gstreamer had no effect.

Some general information:
- My music collection is in FLAC but other formats seem to cause the same behaviour.
- Music from an NFS share or my external USB drive causes the same behaviour
- VLC plays music from my NFS share without any problems
- Removing ubuntu-one (as suggested in some posts) did not help
- I'm using Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 x86

I've had no luck searching the interwebs for help thus far. Does anyone have any ideas?

General :: Changing The Environment Variable Permanently In Ubuntu 10.10

Apr 30, 2011

I want to make change to environment PATH system wide. Because I have program called "md5". I want to execute it from anywhere (i.e any directory).

My md5 program is located at "/home/ahuq/MappingServer/md5_program". So what I did was to put: "export PATH=$PATH:/home/ahuq/MappingServer/md5_program" in the running SHELL.

This only makes temporary changes and lets me run the "md5" program from anywhere temporarily.

But I want to make this change permanent. So what I did was to put the "PATH=$PATH:/home/ahuq/MappingServer/md5_program" line into the "/etc/environment" file.

This screwed everything up and then for a while I couldn't execute anything from SHELL. I knew the absolute path of "nano" editor and used it to modify the file (i.e. /etc/environment) back to its original condition.

This fixed the problem and now I can run programs like "ls" from the SHELL.

But still I need a way to permanently add the path of "md5" to the environment. How can I do this in Ubuntu 10.10? Which file needs to edited?

Do I just logout or do I have to restart the system to make the changes active?

Ubuntu Security :: Changing Hardware ID Info?

Aug 31, 2010

Each computer has certain hardware that has its own ID...My understanding is that this info can be used to identify you.

Is there a way to either permanently change the ID values of that hardware in the bios or hardware, or at least a way to alter what you transmit to websites when that info is recorded?

What information is being transmitted as I post right now?

Lately I have become very concerned about data mining. I do not want corporations to be saving my web browsing behavior so they can market me products, and I do not want that same info being given to the government either. I have an expectation of privacy on the internet.

General :: Stop Song On The Laptop - Start Playing Same Song On The PC?

Sep 24, 2010

I'm looking for some pointers on a method to "transfer" the song-playing from my laptop to my PC, both running ubuntu. The use case is: I'm home listening to some song on the laptop. Then I realize how crappy the speakers are. Here's what I do *now*:

1. Stop playback on the laptop
2. Get up, go to the PC, open the music player
3. Find the same song
4. Try to find the same point in the song
5. Stop playback on the laptop
6. Start playback on the PC (the PC has good speakers)

Of course now I'm dreaming of having a "button" I push that does all this all by itself. Can anyone give me some pointers?

Programming :: Bash : Searching For Info And Changing The Color Of Keywords In The Results?

May 5, 2011

(bare with me as I am sort of new with scripting) I am trying to figure out how to run a script that does a basic chkconfig and to get only those services that are running, but changing the color of "on" to red in my output file. Here is what I am working with so far:

Quote:

#/bin/bash
RED=$(tput setaf 1)
BLK=$(tput setaf 0)

[code]....

*I had to substitute a "-" and <colon_symbol> for ":" in front of the on's, because the forum thought they were smiley faces (i.e. n) how to make the "on" to be red while the rest of everything remains in black text. I have been trying to read up on sed and awk, but it is still pretty much a mystery to me right now. There will be other things in the output file that I wouldn't want a rogue "on" to be in red, so just the instances of "on" in that one chkconfig return.

Slackware :: (rhythmbox:15745): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Could Not Open Device /dev/radio0

Aug 8, 2010

we were watching Clint Eastwood in Pink Cadillac on DVD. Earlier, I had been checking out the streaming internet radio on my roommates Mint laptop using Rhythmbox, and found it to be pretty cool. Usually, if I stream any music, it's just from the CBC (like the U.S.'s NPR), so I just stream it directly from them, but all the stations on rhythmbox (there's a whack of them) got me interested. At the start of Pink Cadillac, I proposed myself a challenge: Could I manage to get rhythmbox (a GNOME application) to work on my Slack64 -current box, before the movie ended? There's probably (maybe?) a similar app that installs and works more natively on Slack, but that's not the point; I wanted to try installing rhythmbox in < 2 hrs. Well, I got it installed finally, *just* at the end of the movie credits, but it won't play! And sometimes it segfaults. So, I wonder if anyone has any tips about what I might be missing or whatever.

Here's what I typically get when I first start it up (though it starts & runs OK):

Code:

sasha@reactor: rhythmbox
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
(rhythmbox:15745): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: IA__gdk_pixbuf_get_width: assertion `GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed
(rhythmbox:15745): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player keys: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name

[code].....

Seems even on systems with some sort of 'natural' support for installing this thing, a lot of people are getting the same or very similar errors, but I haven't found a solution (obviously - I wouldn't be posting otherwise ) but people, myself included, have discovered that there doesn't seem to be a 100% accurate list of *required* dependencies for rhythmbox; it needs stuff that it doesn't tell you it needs.

EDIT: Disclaimer (just to cut the 'dependency-hell' arguments off at the pass, so to speak): This is just a fun experiment for me. I don't suggest Slackware newbies start trying to install <xyz Gnome application> into their Slackware boxes unless you want to spend HOURS fixing stuff like this, and you want to have fun doing it, and have it maybe bork your box up. And if you *do* decide to try it anyways, don't blame Slackware for giving you dependency hell. Gnome doesn't come with Slackware (here's the ChangeLog). I like Slackware exactly the way it is - it comes with more than enough apps to satisfy most people, all nicely working out of the box, so installing stuff like this is not really necessary - but I'm choosing to do this one anyway, and am not deterred by this "mess" of stuff. If this dependency stuff isn't your 'cup of tea', an 'automatically-dependency-resolving' distro might be better for you; I prefer to mess my machine up on my own, rather than let my package manager do it for me.
