I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 x64, and I have an AMD Phenom 2 x4 940 CPU. First I have to underline that four cores worked perfectly in previous versions of Ubuntu as well as Windows.
When looking at system monitor it tells me that I have two CPUs/Cores, it should be four.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have now installed Wheezy on two different hard drives and in each case it seems only one CPU of my dual core CPU computer is recognized. System Monitor, Gkrellm and lscpu show just one when prior to the new install the old Wheezy showed both CPU's. I have put the hard drive into two other computers with dual core CPU's and all show just one CPU.
Interestingly System Profiler and Benchmark (hardinfo?) > Devices > Processors now show a large amount of processor infomation when with the old Wheezy I would only see both CPU's listed and nothing else.
I have just purchased an AMD Phenom II 1055T 6 Core CPU to replace my aging CPU. The problem is only 1 core is visible to Ubuntu, Does it actually support 6 cores?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Added Wine from Software Center but have no any Win apps loaded or running yet. I have also enabled visual Effects and the system installed and enabled NVidia's driver for the video-card after which the picture quality improved.
Here is the screen of my CPU monitor (sorry labels arre in Russian but the charts are quite intuitive) As you can see this 100% load "jumps" from one core to another periodically. On the Processes tab there is nothing fancy:
Less than 10% processes load. I have tried to play with CPU Clock Gnome widget, it doesn't really change the picture whether I use MAX CPU clock of 2Ghz or reduced power-saving 1,2 GHz. I have found couple similar cases on forum but see no solution so far.BTW, I have already launched the update manager and currently Ubuntu does not offer any new updates.

Whenever I monitor my CPU's, it seems only the first is ever utilized, with the second always being at 0%.Does this mean it is not being used, or just not being reported as in use?Is there anything I could do to improve the situation if it is not being used as much as it could be?On Windows, I can assign processes to both cores, or either one. Is there a way to do something similar in Linux?

I know that when hyperthreading is enabled, each physical core is splitted into two virtual cores. I want to know, which pair of virtual cores shares a physical core and which are not. Or, how (in what order) will Linux enumerate HT-cores comparing to real cores. (enumerating is done for sched_setaffinity and taskset masks).
I have a dump of /proc/cpuinfo file from the system.
I think there are possible:
CPU0-CPU7 are not sharing phys. core. CPU8-CPU15 too. But sharing is in pairs CPU0+CPU8, CPU(i)+CPU(i+8) and so on. or CPU0+CPU1 are from single physical, CPU2+CPU3, CPU(2*i)+CPU(2*i+1). or exotic CPU0+CPU15 sharing, CPU1+CPU14 ... or random?
The hard moment in this case is that there are 2 physical dies of CPU (two sockets), and usual recommendation of using "physical id:" field can't help

Im running 64bit centos 5.6 and using virt-manager.On one of my guest OS's, Windows 7, The max Physical CPUs is 2, you can have unlimited CPU Cores however. (like my machine i use for work has 1, 4 core processor).The issue im having is xen only allows you to set the vcpu arguemnet in your xen config file. How can i set it so that 1 CPU has several Cores just as windows would recognize this machine if i were installing directly to the hardware vs via a VM.Ive searched for 2 days staright trying to address this issue, very little progress, Does anyone know where a XEN support forum is? all i get is the citrix xen support forums.
here is the best info i have found on this, but i dont know how to change this for my CPU to work, when i enter this in my xen config it essentially ignores it and just takes the value of vcpu= so windows shows 2 CPUs each with ONLY one core. Id like 1 or 2 CPUS showing Several cores.The physical Hardware is 2x Xeon 5300 Quad Core CPUs.

i am running gigabyte GA-M68M-S2P and AMD sempron 2.7. the problem is when i try to run dual core. it will boot and run for 2mins then it crashes. single core runs perfect.

I have a command line OCR program called OCR Shop XTR (Vividata corp) that I am using on a system with a 6-core AMD chip. I changed the bios so that the 6-cores were activated, but htop shows me that while the program is running, I am only getting activity on one core (the program maxes out the one core with consistent usage between 97% and 100%).
I have read that many programs are not written to take advantage of multiple core cpu's. However, I am just hoping that there is some way to get this program to take advantage of the extra cores. Does anyone know of a way to invoke programs from the command line which would spread the workload out among additional cores?

I recently read in a forum that by default the Linux kernel only activates one of two cores in a dual core processor. Searching online gave one option to find out and that was the mpstat command. I therefore ran the command and got the following output.As the result says, it shows only 1 cpu. I was wondering what I could do to activate both cores in my machine, and whether doing so was going to cause me any problems.

Dual boot Ubuntu 10.10 32bit (primary use) and XP (gaming use only)
The issue I have is that the CPUs seem to run at 100% constantly in Ubuntu meaning that the CPU fans are constantly at high. This makes the machine sound like a wind tunnel!
It is nice and quiet in XP.
I installed GKrellM monitor which is what is telling me about the 100% CPU useage.
Would using the 64bit Ubuntu make any difference? (dont really want to reinstall tbh)

I'm buying a new fanless desktop unit with 2 x 1.66GHz Intel Atom D510 CPUs. The vendor calls these a '64-bit processor'. But the unit has just 4Gb of memory and I don't want the fuss of 64-bit for the basic stuff I do. So I asked them to load Lucid-32.
Will the processors work with 32-bit?
The vendor tells me 32-bit won't make full use of the 4GB, only three and a half, but all else will be fine. So they'll load 32 and I'll try a live DVD of 64 in my own time. But I thought 32 bit was fine up to and including 4GB of memory?
I have an i7 980x (hexacore) machine, installed with ubuntu 10.04. Has the stock 2.6.28-15-server #52-Ubuntu SMP kernel. When I check my /proc/cpuinfo, I can see only 8 CPUs. Was expecting to see 12. Is there any way to get all my 12 CPUs.

Based on what I have read, it iis possible so I started theupgrade process. I get an error message saying that /dev/hda6 (my root paritition does not exist) even though it does.
Does the installer need to read a label from /etc/fstab? I executed tune2fs -L / /dev/hda6 amd ,and added LABEL=/ for the corresponding entry for fstab. but the FEDORA CORE 10 is still giving the same problems for the installation process. Should I upgrade to an intermediate verson like Fedora Core 7 first?
I've a program that launches new processes, and wait for them to die before it exits. So, for example, my program is a process, and it launches 3 more processes, and when the 3 child processes end, it will exit.
As you see, at end of the example, the program used a total number of 4 processes.
1 - Now, I'm running this program in a CPU with 4 cores. This means that the program used each core for each process?
2 - How can I know which core the program used?
I've got some weird stuff going on with my F14 setup, I seem to be getting loads of CPU activity with nothing happening! Both CPUs are running about 60% as soon as I log in to my normal account. If I log into another account it drops to about 15%. Sometimes when I log out I get a message saying that 'an unknown process' is still running. Looking at processes it is not apparent what is causing this as nothing is using that much CPU. It does show some processes with no name, which seem to come and go and change ID. The only things I've installed recently are dropbox and myth tv. I've removed dropbox but no change. how I can find out where my CPU time is going!

I've looked and looked and cannot find any information on this topic; is there a core limitation in the kernel configuration that I missed? View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a high resolution file (1080p) encoded with H.264 and when I play it back, it lags at certain parts (and enough parts to destroy the job of watching the video).
I don't think that my computer is that crappy and it has been able to play many H.264 encoded files with high resolution - so there is always a possibility that this file is just encoded poorly (lacking a better computer, I cannot test).
For information, I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. I have a Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9550 (@2.83 GHz). I have 8 GB of RAM (forgot the speed off the top of my head). And a Nvidia GeForce GTX 280 (1 GB of memory).
During the playback, the RAM is far from being completely used; however, it seems that one (and only one) of the cores of my CPU becomes saturated at 100% precisely at the moments in which the file lags. When the CPU utilization is below 100%, there is smooth playback.
My question is - is it possible to use all four cores during playback, or is such a process not capable of easy parallel processing.
Another side question is, how can I be sure that my GPU is being used in the decoding process - or is that also being under-utilized?
Not so long time ago I have installed Centos 5.3 on my AMD Phenom II X4 server (I am hosting game servers on it). Only today I noticed, that cpuinfo shows me only two CPUs. I watched for the info in the dmesg and found there that the system boots up only 2CPUs.

Am I correctly understand that something wrong in BIOS? Or it is something else?
I have a notebook with AMD Athlon 64 QL-62 2 cores CPU. Normally the temperature is 50-52 Celsius in idle but with Ubuntu 10.04 beta 2 idle temp is 60 Celsius. /proc/cpuinfo shows both cores on 1GHz which is good but still temp is higher than usual. I tried to find solution using Google but I didn't find anything.
