View 3 RepliesHow do I temporally disable compiz when in unity-3d so that I can play a game at the correct speed (with compiz enabled I get about 20% of the speed I get with compiz disabled) I have tried a script with
metacity --replace &
./game
compiz --replace &
But this makes an unusable desktop.
I know I can use unity-2d but that seems to be worse in terms of usability.. I also know I can use gnome2 but whats the point when that will be missing in the next release . Is there anyway of doing this in unity-3d? Are there any plans (possibly from compiz) to ever do this automatically ?
One thing that worries me is that a new user will try a opengl game and think that Linux is far slower than Windows at games (which if you have a nvidia card with the binary driver is not true)
I'm new to, not just SUSE, but Linux(.) I saw the link to the newbie guide However it's asking for information, I choose not to make public, or or known. Also, Any info on running a game server for Source SDK games.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I play some fullscreen games such as Trackballs, the bottom part of the game gets "chopped off". If I choose not to play in fullscreen (via the game options), I can see the whole game.
I'm guessing this could be a bug in the nvidia graphics driver?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with the latest nvidia driver. I know it's a "closed source" driver, but it was the only one I was offered to install.
When I download a game from the Ubuntu Software manager, it doesn't show up in the applications. Is there another place where the files are located? And how can I execute them? I am trying to run Mednafen
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'll say this first: we want to NOT USE WINE. we don't care how much WINE has advanced, want to avoid reliance on an outside program to run this.
I've been planning a game with someone and we want it to be able to run on linux (Umbuntu base) without wine. It should be able to also run on Windows as well, however.
The game will be a graphical MU* with combat and item systems. We have no budget- it's a shoestring sort of thing.
Here's what has been hashed out so far: Programed in C#, maybe with some .NET graphics will be 2D, however, a 3d effect is wanted for things like ascending and descending (Z axis) Partner wants to use Tom Shane's GUI library (Neoforce Controls) Partner wants to use flatredball as graphics engine I don't care what is used as long as it works without WINE
Here's the problem: Flat red ball uses Direct X and is not openGL compatible (that I'm aware of) and my partner wants the effects from the flat red ball engine. Also, the GUI library he wants is also not openGL compatible.
We need some other opensource or freeware graphics engine that can do things like flat red ball but still work in Linux. GUI packs are also nice. I Tried suggesting but Partner has issues with....Mono - Mono.XNA won't work directly using openGL - thinks it's "too hard" after playing with OpenTK even though I told him they aren't the same Java - too clunky Horde3d - Wouldn't even look at the link
We've only been working on planning stages and aren't too in-depth yet. Also, his former interest in making this run in wine without Linux seems to be dipping right along with a marked increase in wanting to rely on Microsoft.
I've recently installed Karmic on my desktop and I've been tweaking everything to my liking. I was recently attempting to clean out all the applications I don't use and I wanted to remove all the games from the list except for one game which I play oftenAfter going into System>Preferences>Main Menu and unchecking everything except the one game I want to show I noticed the games remain unmodified in the Applications>Games menu

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis game is Java based. After rebooting the game works, but on ending the game several notification boxes remain. If these boxes are not closed in the reverse order that the game opened them, it is no longer possible to close them. Only by killing the Java processes can these notifications be made to close. Also after playing the game, even if all these notifications are closed it is many times necessary to kill the Java process(es) in order to get the game to load again at a later time. I am currently using Slackware 1.30, but a similar problem has existed in several of the past releases.

View 3 Replies View RelatedDo you know any game engines or game studios that can make adventure games, for instance in the style of Myst (1st person) or in the style of old Sierra games (3rd person), like King's Quest, Space Quest, etc.?I've seen AGI Studio, but it is too old, I'd like to use more modern graphics (although there is no need for 3D).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there was any way to remove icons from the installed applications menu?I recently attempted to install GOG.com's Zork Anthology using Wine and when I de-installed, the icons for those files were still listed in installed applications. Is there anyway to delete them manually?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.
Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.
Is there a way to do this in C/C++.
I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.

i would like to run install disks via WINE, but there is a problem. the CD's are by default not executable, and the cd is read only, so when I try to change that I cant.
I'm going to install Ubuntu 64bit, currently run 10.10 32bit. I'm thinking about going back to 10.04 in combination with a previous version of wine(maybe 1.2?) to get some games working again.
Do any of you know if games are still working well with this combination? I'm looking to play WoW at some point, Oblivion + Expansion/Mods, any FPS available.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI really just need to know what stupid thing I'm doing to cause this. I've extracted the files, and when I try to run the setup program, if I click on it from a file browser window in GNOME it just doesn't do anything. If I attempt to run the file (it's a .sh file, if that makes any difference) in the terminal, it says "command not found", even though I'm in the directory, and can clearly see the file when running ls.
If I try to run it in the file browser, and click on "Run in Terminal" then the terminal pops up, and goes away instantly.
When I upgraded to 11.04 games like Postal 2 and Lugaru do not play right anymore. I find them very choppy and the game sometimes just stops working. Now when I was using 10.10 the games were working fine.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently set-up a MUSH (Multi-User Shared Hallucination), which is kind of like a MUD (Multi-User Domain/Dungeon/etc.). Basically, it is a text-based RPG for roleplaying games the old fashioned way from back before the dawn of GUI/graphic user interface. I would like to embed an application into my website to allow players (who don't want to download and run a separate mud/mush client program) to connect directly from the website. I came across this: [URL]
Though, I have not been able to set it up to work with my site. Perhaps because that is a MUD app and not a MUSH app? I don't know if that is relevant. It is basically a telnet type of connection, and that uses Java, though I'm not sure what else there is to it. Does anybody have any input on how I can get the text-based RPG accessible from a website?
