Ubuntu :: Karmic Applications>Games Not Changing?
Jan 6, 2010
I've recently installed Karmic on my desktop and I've been tweaking everything to my liking. I was recently attempting to clean out all the applications I don't use and I wanted to remove all the games from the list except for one game which I play oftenAfter going into System>Preferences>Main Menu and unchecking everything except the one game I want to show I noticed the games remain unmodified in the Applications>Games menu

I wanted to see what games there were, but can't seem to find any. So i opened software manager, went to games and so-called install a couple of card games. But I still have no category for games in list of applications.

I have a boring, brown, GDM login screen. I'm assuming this is what shows when there are no GDM themes. I don't see any options in Administration -> Login Window, so what do I need to do to get the standard, Ubuntu GDM theme? What package (asides from vanilla GDM) is required for this on Karmic?

Just noticed that my games package has disappeared from "applications". I have two games on my desk top which are still there, however, the games package has gone. Checked the software centre which tells me that all the default games that were loaded on install are all still installed. I can't find them, where oh where can they be ?

Sometimes when starting applications, especially with Wine, the screen resizes to a much lower resolution. Sometimes when I close the application & usually when it crashes/I have to kill it, the screen stays at that much lower resolution. To get my normal 1900*1200 resolution back I have to delete all the applets I've put in the top menu bar to for there to be enough space for the menu to appear for me to select System>Prefs>Monitors. How can I prevent an application from altering my resolution & just force it to run windowed, or at a higher resolution?

I was tackling this question before using specifics and got nowhere, so now I am going to general. I have a certain application on my machine and many files which can only open using that application. When I open those files, they do not use that application, but use the Archive Manager instead. When I go to "Open With" --> "Other" this application is not in the "other" list. I want to emphasize that because so far everyone assumes too quickly that I didn't try that. This application was installed using the Software Manager, the files that came with fedora. The application is on my machine, this is a fact. I am able to go find the application and open it up manually. Why wouldn't Fedora know that this app is on my machine?

What file where holds the information for file opening application preferences?
I have Fedora Core 10 (2.6.27.5) with openoffice 3.0 installed. All of the OpenOffice programs show in Applications>Office drop down window and work fine.
Problem is this: If I double click on a calc spreadsheet file (.ods) then the archive manager wants to open it, and I have to right click and manually select scalc as the program to use. If I double click on an odt text file (.odt), okular opens it. I have to right click and select swriter.
If -- BTW -- I click on an excel (.xls) file, calc will start and open the file.
I would like to change these file application preferences, but can't find where to do it or what file to edit to break the current preferences.

I had been happily on Jaunty Jackalope until they stopped supporting it so I took the forced upgrade and it's HORRIBLE!
I feel like I'm back in Windows land. Within an hour of my first load I had my very first Ubuntu total-lockup. Just like Windows. In the 18 months I'd been using Jackalope I had not had a single crash. Not one.
It's slow, jerky, and has odd freezes. Just like Windows. Applications randomly stop working and die. Just like Windows.
Is there any way to fall back to Jackalope or is there any hope of them fixing Koala? 'Cause this is wretched.
I see there's another version out there...10.04.01.LTS. I'll try that. It can't be much worse.

I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

I was wondering if there was any way to remove icons from the installed applications menu?I recently attempted to install GOG.com's Zork Anthology using Wine and when I de-installed, the icons for those files were still listed in installed applications. Is there anyway to delete them manually?

I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

Is there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.
Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.
Is there a way to do this in C/C++.
I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.

Obviously I have openoffice installed under linux, but the wine app cannot see it. How can I make the wine app see across the emulation layer into linux to see the app it needs? Dont tell me I need to install openoffice under wine as well to get it to work!

I just made the switch from windows xp and i am very glad i did. One problem though, I cant get steam games to run right. I have steam installed on an external hard drive and can start it up with wine but whenever i try to run a game, the "starting (game name here)" screen comes up and then disappears and the game doesn't open. I've tried several different tutorials on how to run steam but all they do is tell how to install it.I'm running ubuntu 9.10 x64 if that helps at all.

A friend of mine gave me a few .iso games that will work just from the computer...not using a cd drive. I figured out how to do it in windows, it was pretty easy, but in ubuntu its not as easy. I got some tips on how to mount...and after some experimenting i got it to work. So i installed Morrowind thru Wine. And it starts the opening screen just fine (where you can pick "Play" "Options" etc.) But when i click play it gives me an error that it cant find a cd drive on my computer...because i use a netbook. why this is happening since i have it mounted. Also i am trying to use PlayOnLinux, since ive heard it is good at auto fixing problems that youd have to manually fix thru Wine, and id like to be able to run Morrowind thru that if possible.
