Ubuntu :: Xfce/Thunar Will Not Mount CDs?

Jul 17, 2010

I have Volume Management enabled in Thunar, and I have Removable Storage set to "Mount removable media when inserted". If I insert a DVD I get an icon on my desktop and in the side-pane of Thunar and a folder appears in /media. If I insert a CD I get... nothing. I can play an audio CD in gxine or mplayer or Decibel, but I can't browse the contents with Thunar. The same drive is used for both CDs and DVDs.

Ubuntu :: XFCE Thumbnails Not Appearing In Thunar

Aug 26, 2010

When I open Thunar, I can see thumbnails of jpegs, but not for video, pdf or document files. I've got the Thumbnailers package installed as part of XFCE Goodies, and also ffmpegthumbnailers (? I think, I'm at work so can't check). I've looked for a setting to change, but can't see anything relevant. Previous installations have allowed me to have beautiful thumnail icons.

OpenSUSE :: XFCE Launch Error - Thunar ?

Sep 6, 2011

I have encountered a problem with an XFCE Launch Error. Upon first login, if I double click any Thunar related icon or try to launch Thunar from the menu, it will take 20-30 seconds to start. At first it was giving me the following Launch Error: "The folder could not be opened. Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." After successive reboots, I no longer get the Launch Error, but it still takes 20-30 seconds to start Thunar.

This is a new install of OpenSUSE and I did updates. The first two updates I did were required by the update software itself. After that was complete I updated the rest of the recommended packages. I then installed gnome-control-center to get gnome-display-properties so I can adjust my login screen settings. Those are all the updates I have done.

I have poured over other threads about the aforementioned Launch Error, and it seems possible that it is related to message bus security policy or gtk2 settings somewhere.

Is there a way to log XFCE errors or message bus errors to a file for troubleshooting? I would like to find out why and where this is happening.

Debian Configuration :: Wheezy Xfce 4.8 VERY SLOW First Thunar Startup

May 16, 2011

I upgraded my main PC's Xfce 4.6 to Xfce 4.8 this morning. Now, every time I start Thunar for the first time after a new boot, it takes about 30 seconds to appear, and then about 10 seconds later, a second instance of it appears. After that, Thunar appears instantly every time I start it during that same session. But if I shut-down or restart my PC, Thunar again takes about 30 seconds to start up, and a second instance of it appears about 10 seconds later.

Google searches seem to indicate that people running other distros are also experiencing this problem. On advice in a different forum, I deleted the ~/.config/Thunar folder and restarted my PC, but that didn't help -- it created a new Thunar folder, but the long delay and the double-Thunars are still there every time I run Thunar for the first time in a session.

Debian Multimedia :: Opening Windows Shares In XFCE (Thunar)

May 24, 2015

Another thing that's always worked before but now I'm struggling with in Jessie, if I open a smb:// url it just says "Not supported", is it possible to add support in Thunar? Some googling says to install gvfs but it is already installed, gvfs-open just says "command not found" though.

Strange thing is that I have tons of those little problems that seem to be regression since Wheezy but somehow I'm the only one hit heh. I actually think all the problems are caused by choosing "XFCE" on the installer because I can reproduce them 100% on any PC as long as I install XFCE, it's better to install entirely default (Gnome) and add xfce afterwards is my theory but I don't feel like reinstalling the whole system again.

Debian :: Mount Any External Volume In Thunar?

May 27, 2011

I am running wheezy + xfce. When I attempt to mount any external volume in Thunar, I get a message saying "Unable to mount-- not authorized." This is problem #1. A bigger problem that I think is related is my wireless. Logged in as a normal user, I cannot connect to any wireless networks using network-manager. My wireless card is functional and I can see all the networks around me, but when I click on one to connect, nothing happens. No password prompt, nothing. Strangely, when I log in as root, wireless works flawlessly. I am a member of the netdev group.

Software :: Thunar-volman Won't Mount Anything HAL/DBus Complaining?

May 24, 2010

I'm trying to get automounting working with Arch on my laptop, and I've installed thunar-volman. The trouble is, whenever I put in a CD or plug in a USB mass storage device (thumb drive, USB hard drive, etc.), it gives me a dialog like the following: Quote:

Failed to mount [CD/DVD/USB device here]. Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.31" (uid=1000 pid=5706 comm="exo-mount) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=2186 comm="/usr/sbin/hald)).

I'm guessing this means there's some config in HAL or DBus that I need to fix, but I can't even begin to figure out what file it could be in.. I've tried searching LQ and Google to no avail. It seems that either the solution is sitting right in front of me, or hardly anyone even has this problem. I can mount the devices manually (as root), but like I said, if I put in a CD/DVD or plug in a USB storage device, or if I double-click the icon on the desktop, I get the above error. I've tried adding myself to the groups optical, disk, storage, and power, but I still get the same thing.

Debian Multimedia :: ESATA + Thunar: You Do Not Have Privileges To Mount <volume>

May 16, 2011

how to get thunar with xfce 4.6 to mount external hard drives. Thunar with xfce 4.8 uses udisk, and all external and internal hard disks show up in the sidebar. With thunar in debian squeeze, though, no internal or external hard drives show up.

I can live without internal hard drives showing up, but I'd like to be able to mount my eSATA drive automatically. So far I've been completely unsuccessful in getting an entry to show up in thunar (like when a usb flash disk or cd is inserted), so I've added an entry to fstab:

LABEL=LIBRARY   /home/library   ext4   noauto, defaults, users And that doesn't seem to do anything. With and without the fstab line, I get a popup saying something like "Unable to mount volume "LIBRARY". You do not have priviliges to mount LIBRARY."

Everything else seems to mount fine. It's just that thunar/hal/whatever thinks that my eSATA drive is an "internal" hard drive and so doesn't treat it as removable.ALL of my drives, internal and eSATA, show up in the gtk "places" menu that is used in file-roller, iceweasel, etc. If I could find a way to get thunar to do this (like it can wtih xfce 4.8 and udisks) that would be GREAT.

EDIT: I also wanted to add that they show up in pcmanfm, but it also tells me "Not authorized" when I try to mount them.

Debian Multimedia :: Mount Android Mass Storage Device In Thunar

Apr 12, 2016

Since I use openbox with some packages from Xfce4 (mainly for convenience) I get most stuff "for free" as it were when using openbox, but I can't figure out how to mount android devices in a simple way. I can either do it manually, or install some other file manager that has this capability. This leads me to my question, I've noticed that if I install Nautilus, which automatically mounts android devices OotB, I get this functionality in Thunar as well. This leads me to believe that there is clearly a dependency package of some kind installed when running apt-get install nautilus that enables it, It'd be great to get this functionality in Thunar without having all the nautilus packages just littering about for no good reason. the required package is gvfs-backends, which I should have realized when I was unable to browse smb:// addresses. You forget a lot when you only make a fresh install once every 2 years or so.

Ubuntu :: Gigolo Keeps Using Nautilus Instead Of Thunar

May 12, 2011

I've got this Ubuntu 10.04 machine at work where I installed xubuntu-desktop as I'm much more familiar with Xfce than with Gnome. This means now all Gnome and Xfce related applications are installed (both Nautilus and Thunar, to make an example).I use Gigolo to access network shares.Problem is, when I open a network share with Gigolo, Nautilus opens instead of Thunar. This is annoying for a number of reasons and I'm not going to bother you with those.I want Gigolo to use Thunar instead.

I already did everything that's suggested on the Gigolo help page, but the problem persists. Uninstalling Nautilus, besides not being an option as this is a multi-user machine, doesn't solve the problem and actually results in this error on the terminal.

Ubuntu :: Any Way To Avoid Running Thunar?

Jul 13, 2011

I had a problem with Thunar in Xubuntu. As I often work with huge images, memory is consumed generating Previews. Disabling Previews seems to be very difficult in Thunar, as it makes use of external Thumbnailers. Another problem is making a file executable. I couldn't find out how to do that in Thunar. So I decided to change back to Nautilus, which solves the problems. In preferences it is easy to disable generating previews. But I was not able to get completely rid of Thunar. The folders on my desktop still would open in Thunar, although I set Nautilus as default browser. So the problem sometimes is still there. Uninstall is not possible, as it completely uninstalls xfce-desktop. Is there a way to avoid running both browsers at the same time?

Ubuntu :: GUI Freezes During Right-click Thunar Operations?

Jul 6, 2011

This has been going on for a few days now... when doing anything involving an opened right-click menu in Thunar, there seems to be a chance that the entire desktop will "freeze". I can move the mouse cursor, but cannot interact with any windows. If I use ALT+CTR+F* to switch to a terminal session and switch back to the graphical session, all the windows on the desktop appear blank. The computer appears to be running normally, I just can't interact with the GUI.So far, I've just been shutting down and rebooting when this happens... any ideas on how to go about diagnosing the problem and/or regaining control of the graphical session? I am using compositing and making non-focused windows translucent, but no other actions cause the GUI session to freeze so I don't think it's just a graphical issue.

Ubuntu Networking :: Thunar And Terminal Permissions Don't Match?

May 6, 2010

I just upgraded my laptop to Xubuntu 10.4. I have a nfs server I connected to with my old Xubuntu 9.10 set up. I loaded portmap and nfs-common then made a mount point. I chowned and chmodded the mount point in the terminal to my user name. But Thunar (the file manager for Xubuntu) won't let me open subdirectories. So I went back to the terminal and chowned and chmodded again with a -R. In the terminal I can read and write as user. Thunar (as user) says I don't have permissions to see the subfolders. When I start Thunar as root it assigns the permissions to my user name but not when I start Thunar as user. When I start it as user and browse to the folder and select properties it says the owner is root. What the frak? How do I get Thunar to see the permissions I set in terminal as sudo? Or better yet, how can I set the permissions for my mount point so that I can access and write to directories and files on my nfs share. I have no problems with my other computers with this server's shares.

Debian Multimedia :: Thunar Hangs/Goes To 100% CPU?

I've tried opening the same folder on Windows and it didn't give me any problem, so I'm assuming that the problem lies within Thunar, and not the external hard drive itself.

I end up having to format the drive to get my space back.If I open a terminal and go to /media/NEW VOLUME/.Trash-500/files I can see the files and folders that should have been deleted.

I'm using a net install of openSuSE with the XFCE environment, and I've never had this issue on a clean gnome install or any other desktop. I'm also using kernel 2.6.38-30-desktop.
