I've recently fallen in love with the speed and great performance of the xfce desktop. The only problem I have is that the default file manager is Thunar.
How can I change it to Dolphin?
The answer seems like it would be easy but I seriously can't figure this out.
I'm using Ubuntu Karmic, and I really don't like Nautilus. Is there a way to switch to Thunar?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm wonder why my NTFS partition which automounts on startup (via /etc/fstab) is not in Thunar left pane - both in the tree and shortcuts. But I'm pretty sure the /etc/fstab is correct. Is there any way I can check and correct this?I managed to make a work around though. I created a bookmark of the volume. Although, of course, I wanted it the way it should be in the first place.

I thought it might be some KDE issue as is the ever developing code and will be fine in future updates. But now I'm in 4.2.1 and it still exists. Upon inquiring fellow users on other distros, I have come to believe this is a *Fedora only* issue now.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI noticed recently that when you put a Audio "red book" cd in the drive and look at it with KDE Dolphin file manager, it shows the CD as a handy tree of folders called "MP3", "Ogg", "FLAC" and so on. So if you copy the FLAC directory to your hard drive, it then uses flac to rip the wav files in the CD to FLAC's on the hard drive. This is all nice but I noticed my Fedora 15 was doing this without the cdparanoia package being installed. I've since installed cdparanoia (which is a software for robustly error correcting and if necessary, multi-try reading from the disk to get a majority vote correct read). Does this mean I can't be assured the FLAC files Dolphin made are bit perfect? I would have assumed that you'd need to use cdparanoia to be sure the wav's get ripped to flac perfectly.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I have a large collection of VCDs (they used to be very popular and cheap here before DVDs became popular - basically just Data CD with a specific file structure) which I was transferring to my harddrive for easier viewing.
I stopped a few months ago and wanted to do some more today, but find that I can't access them anymore. The VCD is mounted ok, and I can see the root folder, but when I try and go into any folders, Dolphin hangs, the message log shows this over and over again:

I have tried with 2 different DVD drives (both IDE, on different channels), and confirmed the disk works fine when accessed from Windows on the same hardware, so the problem must be with Fedora.

I just installed Fedora 12. When I open Dolphin, I do find links on the sidebar which enable me to mount the NTFS partitions with a click. I want to disable this for less privileged users and only allow root to do mount and unmount of partitions. I was not able to see autofs installed nor any sign of entries in the fstab.

I have about a dozen window managers installed, and just to test the new KDE 4.4 update I used kde for one day (use gnome mostly) and now the gnome places menu opens up the kde file manager dolphin instead of nautilus. How can I change it. It doesn't even appear in the edit menus item on right clicking the menu.

Trying the various settings (and noticing ubuntu gnome users recently had the same exact OPPOSITE problem -- they can't SHOW hidden files in dolphin) to hide my hidden files in dolphin is not working. The settings are saved OK, but those damn (ending in tilde, ie "~") files do NOT ever hide! I even see the correct little green recycling symbol on them, indicating they're identified as such, but no actual hiding goes on..
Nautilus, which I've used before (but have grown tired of, and was looking forward to dolphin), also has a weird issue that seems to have appeared with FC13 (I'd been using FC12 'til now mostly because of this) - there's no way (AFAIK) to tell it to show the location; to see it, you have to click Go->Location each time. Previously I could set it to print out the whole file or server path and it would stay that way when I opened new windows.. This is on fresh install & update.. kernel is 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64.
I compiled ffmpegthumbnailer and installed fine. I have thunar-thumbnailers installed, and followed the tutorial at;URL...But i still have nothing. Does any one have any tips on setting up ffmpegthumbnailers?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi seem to have encountered a problem with thunar since upgrading gtk2. about once every fortnight i'll do an apt-get update/upgrade. today a lot of gtk2 libs were upgraded. ever since thunar won't recognise mouse clicks to open any folders in the detailed view, and i'm not entirely sure how or if i can roll back the packages with apt. synaptic won't let me force versions. running squeeze 64 bit btw.

What could be the cause of this? I've tried opening the same folder on Windows and it didn't give me any problem, so I'm assuming that the problem lies within Thunar, and not the external hard drive itself.

The files aren't visible anymore in thunar, but the space isn't available to use. I end up having to format the drive to get my space back.If I open a terminal and go to /media/NEW VOLUME/.Trash-500/files I can see the files and folders that should have been deleted.
I'm using a net install of openSuSE with the XFCE environment, and I've never had this issue on a clean gnome install or any other desktop. I'm also using kernel 2.6.38-30-desktop.
I need to have root permissions to move files onto a said device. How do I run thunar with such permissions?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Volume Management enabled in Thunar, and I have Removable Storage set to "Mount removable media when inserted". If I insert a DVD I get an icon on my desktop and in the side-pane of Thunar and a folder appears in /media. If I insert a CD I get... nothing. I can play an audio CD in gxine or mplayer or Decibel, but I can't browse the contents with Thunar. The same drive is used for both CDs and DVDs.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got this Ubuntu 10.04 machine at work where I installed xubuntu-desktop as I'm much more familiar with Xfce than with Gnome.This means now all Gnome and Xfce related applications are installed (both Nautilus and Thunar, to make an example).I use Gigolo to access network shares.Problem is, when I open a network share with Gigolo, Nautilus opens instead of Thunar. This is annoying for a number of reasons and I'm not going to bother you with those.I want Gigolo to use Thunar instead.
I already did everything that's suggested on the Gigolo help page, but the problem persists. Uninstalling Nautilus, besides not being an option as this is a multi-user machine, doesn't solve the problem and actually results in this error on the terminal.
I had a problem with Thunar in Xubuntu. As I often work with huge images, memory is consumed generating Previews. Disabling Previews seems to be very difficult in Thunar, as it makes use of external Thumbnailers. Another problem is making a file executable. I couldn't find out how to do that in Thunar. So I decided to change back to Nautilus, which solves the problems. In preferences it is easy to disable generating previews. But I was not able to get completely rid of Thunar. The folders on my desktop still would open in Thunar, although I set Nautilus as default browser. So the problem sometimes is still there. Uninstall is not possible, as it completely uninstalls xfce-desktop. Is there a way to avoid running both browsers at the same time?

For some time (I don't remember exactly how long/since when, maybe since I switched to i3 window manager?) I have the problem from title.
Chromium browser uses completely different programs to open files than file browser (thunar). And most of the time thunar has associations I want. For example thunar opens PDFs with iceweasel, and chromium opens them with GIMP (!), note that I have never changed this king of settings. Until I changed it today chromium also used Baobab (I didn't even know it existed before I saw it) to open directories ("show file in directory" for downloaded files).
I know how to change for a single file type (at least for browser), but is there some way to set all file types to something sensible and keep both, browser and thunar in sync without doing all of that manually? Or at least revert it all to default?
Debian version: latest "testing" version. (I use testing because I really need up to date versions of a lot of programs)...
I am running wheezy + xfce. When I attempt to mount any external volume in Thunar, I get a message saying "Unable to mount-- not authorized." This is problem #1. A bigger problem that I think is related is my wireless. Logged in as a normal user, I cannot connect to any wireless networks using network-manager. My wireless card is functional and I can see all the networks around me, but when I click on one to connect, nothing happens. No password prompt, nothing. Strangely, when I log in as root, wireless works flawlessly. I am a member of the netdev group.

However, one problem I've had is that Thunar is no longer showing thumbnails for images and videos. I rm-ed the .thumbnails directory thinking that it would force creation of new thumbnail files, but this didn't work. The directory stays empty.

Upon first login, if I double click any Thunar related icon or try to launch Thunar from the menu, it will take 20-30 seconds to start. At first it was giving me the following Launch Error: "The folder could not be opened. Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." After successive reboots, I no longer get the Launch Error, but it still takes 20-30 seconds to start Thunar.
This is a new install of OpenSUSE and I did updates. The first two updates I did were required by the update software itself. After that was complete I updated the rest of the recommended packages. I then installed gnome-control-center to get gnome-display-properties so I can adjust my login screen settings. Those are all the updates I have done.
I have poured over other threads about the aforementioned Launch Error, and it seems possible that it is related to message bus security policy or gtk2 settings somewhere.
Is there a way to log XFCE errors or message bus errors to a file for troubleshooting? I would like to find out why and where this is happening.
I'm unable to mount external drives in thunar. Pcmanfm works fine. Ive tried a 2gb usb stick and a sd card reader. both give the same error. I used to be able to mount drives with thunar. What happened? I'm using ubuntu 9.10, installed lxde on top of server edition. Thunar is 1.0.1 , from the repos. Here is the output from the usb stick:

In a previous version of Ubuntu, when you installed Thunar you automatically got the Bulk Renamer as well.With the latest version not only does it not download automatically, but I can't find it in Synaptic at all. Has it not been updated to work with Ubuntu 10.04 or am I just being blind, and not seeing something obvious?
