I have the issue of getting the Kubuntu getting booted first if I do not select manually in 7 sec. how to make that auto selection to XP so that, I can leave the computer and let it select Windows.
View 4 RepliesI have been trying for a couple days now to install 10.04 on a 250G hard drive that was a USB boot with 9.1. I want the hard drive in the case. The bios has been changed and does see the new drive. Boot selection has been changed to CD Rom. Everything starts out fine until step 4 of the install, Prepare partitions. There is no hard drive available on this step. The HDD is not seen by the disk utility either.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIn dealing with the Nvidia Powermizer, I have to set it to "Prefer Maximum Power" mode from adaptive mode in order that I can avoid laggy in using my GUI. However, it doesn't save this setting so I have to manually tweak it everytime........
Someone on the web taught me to use the following command line:
nvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GPUPowerMizerMode=1
running it in the terminal it will set to the mode I want.
Would I be able to make my computer run the above command in terminal everytime it starts? I tried to put the command in the start up applications and it seems not working.
Im trying to get to the debian install through ubuntu through windows 7. I used wubi to install ubuntu and partition the hard drive for a debian install later. But now that Ive installed ubuntu theres no selection to boot Windows 7 in the grub menu that wubi set up. I never touched the windows partition during install but used C:/ for the install components. how can i add windows to the grub selection?

It loads OK but I cannot access/select the menus because the mouse pointer bears no relation to the mouse and the keyboard is no help either. Both are incredibly Slow!
The first thing I do when I launch Gimp is to make the Rectangle Select Tool the active selection.The default selection is the Paintbrush Tool. I find this selection dangerous because it's easy to paint over an image that I do not want marked up. There must be some sort of config file that can be altered. I am using Gimp 2.6.8 under Ubuntu Linux.

Everything was going great earlier today when suddenly, my PC on a fresh boot, gave me a message that said something like "Ubuntu is running on low graphics mode ..". It was running a low res, i think it was 640x480, and gave me some repair options like a. Boot in low res mode for just one session b. Trouble shoot this error etc..There were 3 more options but i don't remember what they were.
i chose "boot in low res just for this one session", but it gave me the same error the next boot. Then i tried troubleshooting, which didn't work (restoring to a backup config was no use). Then finally i rebooted and started Ubuntu in Recovery mode, and i did something like "Fix broken packages" because , from the list of options it seemed like the only one which would help at that time.
But now, whenever i choose the Ubuntu option after starting my PC, it just restarts my computer. My other OS is Windows 7 which boots just fine. Hope someone can help me with this . In the meanwhile i'll try making a new MBR or something.
Recently my boot time went from barely 2 minutes to more than 10.it goes to text from the splash logo and a line shows :"running dkms auto installation service for kernel 2.6.28-18-generic".And then each 3 or 4 minutes it shows a driver (for a total of 3) : nvidia, vboxdrv and other one related to vbox.I've scanned through syslog but I can't find anything related to this issue.

from the terminal the raid starts and works fine

I'm trying to install F11 on a machine that was running well under F10 just a few hours ago. I made some changes to the disk configuration, involving the addition of a dmraid-controllable fakeRAID card (SiL 3124 I think) and creating a RAID 0 array out of the two drives connected to the motherboard itself (Intel ICH7R). Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10. My problem is thus: when I boot from the installation DVD (64-bit), the boot process doesn't make it even to anaconda. Here is the error I get, right after md devices are autoconfigured:

I recently broke down in the face of morbid curiosity and clicked that little version update button. it seems to run flawlessly (after i uninstalled the pesky touchpad) but it takes a long time to boot up now. at least a full minute. is this normal?
I will add also that it said my version of grub had been modified (which i dont remember doing, but may have) so i told it to leave the current one in place.
I have a Ubuntu - windows 7 dual boot (in two partitions of the same HDD) desktop PC for a few months. I was learning terminal commands and, although I don't think I made such a big mistake, but the fact is that the a very strange thing happenned: "Preferences" and "Administration" from System disappeared as it did also "Applications". After rebooting the same it remained the same. No big deal, I thought, because I haven't yet saved any important work on Ubuntu. So I reinstalled Ubuntu. Done that everything was nice until I booted Windows... Since then I counldn't start windows after GRUB due to:

Windows Live DVD Repair is useless. I've tried CHKDSK utilities, no result. Windows partition in Ubuntu's Disk Utility is OK but I can't access the files (all "broken links"), just can explore a few directories after which I find myself entering the same folder endlessly. I wanted to repair windows boot or at least recover some important files in Documents and I thought I had backup (but turns out that, for some reason that I'm still trying to understand, they aren't...).
I locked the screen, came back, typed the password, screen remained black, though cursor was visible and moving. Nothing I could do to rejuvenate the screen. Had to switch to tty6, sudo shutdown -r now. Then, on reboot obtained kernel selection, it proceeded to displaying kernel messages, but froze on sdb, after 3 secs. I figured it was the usb, so turned off, removed usb cables to external hard drives, but again it froze saying something about firewire mouse, the mouse is also usb. I tried several times, but no matter what kernel I chose, I couldn't get it to boot. So I loaded puppy live cd, but now it can't access some parts of the disk. I was running utorrent and the folder with partially downloaded files can be accessed but there's nothing there (there was), and some folders can't be accessed at all.

grub2 is installed in /boot (sdb1) and the mbr of (sdb)
I want to be able to boot drive #2 from drive #1 grub menu at boot time. I have run �update-grub and it probes and finds (sdb5) and creates a new grub.cfg called grub.cfg.new in the /boot folder, but the new cfg file does not show (sdb5) or (sdb) it shows all other changes that I made such as splash screens and they are working. How do I get it to recognize drive #2 with Ubuntu 9.10. I can boot each drive independently of one another and I can boot 9.04 with 9.10 if I swap the drives around. And run update-grub The auto probe is working in the Ubuntu 9.10 and may be working partly in the 9.04.
This may or may not be a problem, but is a pain anyway. When I run update-grub in 9.04's grub version 1.96, it does not change anything in the current grub.cfg it does make a new file called grub.cfg.new I have to go into /boot/grub and change grub.cfg to old and change grub.cfg.new to grub.cfg I do not have this problem running the same command in Ubuntu 9.10's grub. It finds changes and os's and automatically updates the current grub.cfg
I have several RHEL 5.0 servers in a secure network. We have identified around 200 rpms from 5.4 that we would like to upgrade. These servers have no connection to the internet, and very limited connection to the corporate network.
The application guys will not approve a full 5.4 upgrade as the app is reliant on certain rpms from 5.0.
So how can I create a boot disk that will install just the selected 200 rpm's. I have been trying to modify (remove rpms) from the downloaded 5.4 dvd, but with no luck. I have also had a look at anaconda, but seem to be going round in circles.
Ubuntu 10.04 I am dual-booting along with Windows. I need to change the order of boot options so that Windows is the automatic selection rather than Ubuntu. I cannot find the file to make the change and not sure what changes I should make when I do find it .

It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.
Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?
I installed the alternate disc on my ibook G4, it finished the install ejectedtrf the didc then restarted , The writing came up I to boot to C for cd rom so ihit retirn as per nut then it just stayed at an empty black screen
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an AMD Athlon 3200+ 64 and I want to install a dual boot Win7/Xubuntu system. When I try to install Xubuntu 64 bit, but the also the 32 bit version and both Kubuntu versions, the installation stops after the keyboard layout screen. The install completely hangs (no cd or other noticeable activity on the computer) and I have to do a hard reboot to get out of it. I've been looking for a solution and found that the options noapic and/or nolapic in the installer F6 menu might solve this problem,unfortunately they didn't work for me. I've done the CD integrety and memory checks, but no errors were found. I'm pretty lost from here.
I also read installing from the alternative CD might work, but I'm not sure what to expect from this textual installation. If it's only a command-line installer I don't think I will be able to do much with it as I haven't yet been able to find a tutorial on how to use it. Does anyone konw where I can find instructions?
Installing 10.10 RC dual boot with Win7. Is there no place in the installer to specify where Grub will be installed? I don't want it installed in the MBR I want it in the partition with / (I usually only create two partitions for Linux / and swap). I prefer to chain load grub from my windows bootloader.

Booting from the CD on my laptop I select the language and selection screen appears with all the F1-F6 options below. I've tried all the selections and options through the F keys but that's as far as the install will go. My laptop is a Dell and it's only 3 years old with plenty of memory and HD space.
View 3 Replies View RelatedFinally got a dual boot on this laptop the way I liked it (LOVE my Win7, really like UBUNTU for certain things like getting booted and on the net fast...great). As I was editing and rebooting the GRUB settings UBUNTU got it's updates and installed (including one on GRUB that I hadn't seen before - WITH WARNINGS). Now I can't seem to get this last entry out of the boot menu: vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic. It has all this listed now (had dual entries for everything like mem test before):

I got rid of the extra entries like memtest and all using: sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+ and such variations..still though I got one stuck in the boot selections. It won't remove the old linux vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic build entry from GRUB (and they both point to the same place). It has a -14 and -17 entry in it now. Like I said both load to the same mount point.
I mean I removed like five extra entries from GRUB using that command after the update (and had done it before about two months ago) but the linux vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic selection won't leave the GRUB selections now. I really thought I had it figured out to the bomb having my laptop dual booting before, just didn't like how UBUNTU used my disk space by default last time so I decided to rebuild the laptop.
First let me describe my system setup. I have windows, ubuntu 64 and ubuntu 32 present. I upgraded the 32 bit version to 10.4 with no problem. After upgrading the 64 bit version is when the problem occurred. I believe it has to do with the grub.cfg file. When I would choose the 64 bit version the screen would just go black, no furthur action. After making a few changes to the 64 bit selection in grub.cfg i come to a screen that says c to continue, s to skip mounting, and m for manual mount. Pressing s gets me in. Here is a copy of my grub.cfg.
