Ubuntu :: Wubi Fails To Uninstall
Mar 19, 2010
Going into my 5th day on trying to get linux to work on my system. I first tried a backtrack DVD but it failed to install after a kernel panic. I tried using ubuntu 9 and 8 but they both freezed at the livecd menu in bios and gave an i/o error.
So I tried using WUBI but after choosing "UBUNTU" in the windows boot manager after the bios, it fails to load. So i try to uninstall Wubi, and i get this:
this is my logfile ( warning: .txt 500kb ) [URL]
I'm guessing there is something very wrong with my pc, due to the i/o errors with both the ubuntu cd's and BT4.
Specs:
Windows 7 x64
4gb normal ram

Like the title says, I uninstalled wubi 10.04 last night and I noticed that my computer was running extremely slowly. I checked the amount of RAM and it said I only had 1 GIG which is definitely wrong. I have 3 GIGs. how I can recover that lost memory? I've tried searching google and haven't really found anything promising..
Also: I'm running windows 7 32-bit on a Sony VGN-CS190.

I want to upgrade to ubuntu 11.04 and I downloaded the iso but it didn't detect my previous installation of ubuntu 10.10. So I thought of going to programs and features and doing a complete uninstall but ubuntu wasn't listed in there even though I installed using WUBI in C drive now what am I supposed to do? Delete all ubuntu files manually? [URL]

I have developed a simple tool to easily uninstall any Ubuntu (or other Linux distro) from an Ubuntu live-CD.It works very well for any Linux installed on a separate partition. Now I am wondering if it is possible to add it the possibility to uninstall a Wubi installation. For the moment, I know how to detect a Wubi install (just need to detect a /ubuntu/disks/root.disk file). Then, all tutos I found use Windows tools, but this "How do I manually uninstall Wubi?" paragraph gives clues to do it from a live-CD :- Remove C:ubuntu and C:wubildr* : ok- remove Ubuntu from the Windows bootloader : do you know how to do this from a live-CD for Vista and Seven ?- remove Ubuntu from the registry : do you know how to do this from a live-CD

When I try to use Wubi to install Ubuntu it fails on reboot. It seems to run a script on reboot then nothing. I get a command prompt window with the script and the laptop seems to lock up. Only a hard re-boot will restart the system. I do get a dual screen boot prompt Windows/Umbutu but if I choose Umbutu, I get the same command prompt screen and the system is locked up again. Chosing Windows at the boot screen works fine.

Argh all that downloading for nothing, it fails when it is around 98% finished with install! Giving a permission denied error, yet that makes no sense because I am running as Administrator account in Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit on amd64).
BTW I followed the recommended fix on the WubiGuide and it doesn't work.
It says to copy the ISO file (ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso) into the same directory as the wubi.exe installer file. I did that and it still goes through the whole long process of downloading the ISO file and gives the same error at the end

I have downloaded wubi.exe to my hard drive. After double clicking the exe and OKing the security dialog, I get a error message box titled: "pyrun.exe - No Disk"The error message reads:"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into the drive DeviceHarddisk3DR5.There are three buttons: Cancel, Try Again, ContinueClicking any of these buttons simply causes the same message box to pop up over and over. I cannot cancel this message or the process unless I reboot my computer. I guess the latest version of Wubi does not run on Windows 7 Ultimate. My computer:Intel Pentium I76GB RAM1TB Hard Disk

I had a 10.04 Wubi install on my Win7 notebook. I selected the option to upgrade to 10.10 from update manager. It downloaded all the updates, but reported that due to some problem, only a partial upgrade will be possible. I agreed. And now, when I select Ubuntu from the startup OS list, it just shows a blank screen and restarts within 3-5 seconds. What do I do??

I have tried twice to use Wubi to install Xubuntu on a Windows XP machine. Each time the results were the same:
1) Downloads the required stuff.
2) Does some post-download stuff.
3) Says it needs to reboot to finish the installation.
-------------- here is where it goes bad -------------
4) Reboots back into Windows. There is nothing set to choose Xubuntu (no error messages displayed in prior steps).
Has anyone else encountered this bug?

Specifically, libgtk2.0-cil, seems to be giving me a world of trouble.
I tried to install mono so that I could use an application. When it went to install libgtk2.0-cil, everything broke. I've tried to reinstall, purge, remove, and each time it fails. I've gone through a few iterations of trying to get things to remove cleanly to start fresh, so there are a few packages that are dependent on libgtk2.0-cil causing issues as well.. but thats to be expected. code...
I tried, and cannot locate the files it notes; `/usr/share/cli-common/packages.d/policy.2.6.gtk-dotnet.installcligac. I tried to create them real quick with touch, it removes what I make but still does not uninstall and still gives the err.
Can anyone offer assistance on removing this so that I can start fresh?

I am trying to install 10.04 with wubi and I encounter a strange error:
At first, everything runs normally. Then I am asked to reboot the system.
After rebooting, Ubuntu starts with a GUI (desktop background, my USB-Mouse is working) and a Window appears ("completing installation" and some advertisement).
A dialog tells me, that the systems tries to set the time (probably from an NTP Server). This is shown with a completion bar, starting at 571% and going up to 800% in several steps. Then it says: "Installation des Grundsystems".
Next steps: creating ext4 file system, copying files ... Again, a progression bar appears, going up to 28%.
Then, an error message appears: "Datei entspricht nicht ihrer Quelle auf der CD/DVD" (file does not match the source on CD/DVD).
It gives me a filename(e.g. /target/usr/lib/smbcquotas) and the choice to Abort/Retry/Skip. I click on "Retry" ("Skip" has exactly the same effekt).
The progress bar goes up to 38%, and I can hear that files are copied. Then the system hangs, showing the desktop wallpaper, mouse functioning. I can only turn it off.
I can try this procedure several times. I even used different disks (one brand new). It always comes to the same end. The only thing that changes are the file names ut gives me. I think that the error message is misleading. Probably there is another error behind the scenes.

I wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? (i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.

I cannot uninstall Firefox, nor can I uninstall Chromium; one always stays if the other is uninstalled. For example, if I remove Firefox, Chromium will appear in its place and vice versa. This has got to be one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen on Ubuntu! So, how can I uninstall both web browsers?

I am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. If I bypass the media check I get the message : Running anaconda 11.4.1.62 the Fedora system installer - please wait.....

We have a computer lab at school that ITS is trying to get ready before the semester starts. ITS is willing to put a wubi install on all the windows 7 machines in the lab after some faculty asked for a linux option. However they don't really support linux and basically need our help if any problems arise. After getting one machine to boot up nicely they used symantec ghost to make an image and put it on all the machines (I don't know the details on this but this is what I gather). However, no machine will boot into Ubuntu 9.10 unless one edits the boot options upon choosing Ubuntu from the windows 7 bootloader. I suspect there is a subtle problem that lies from ghosting the one machine.

Just a small inquiry on how Wubi works. I've never tried it, and it states that it installs in windows? That got me thinking, is it somewhat of a "virtual box" or does it install, partition the drive, then install? I would like to know also that are ALL the features that Ubuntu has to offer installed and usable under Wubi such as advanced desktop effects.

Alright, I've had Wubi running on my Windows 7 PC for a few months now and it's great. I had given Wubi 5GB of space when I installed. After using it for some time, I decided I wanted some more space for my Wubi install. I looked up how to do it and came across a few options. The one I chose is this one: "Download wubi-add-virtual-disk, open a terminal and run: Code: sudo sh wubi-add-virtual-disk /home 15000
Where the first argument is the directory to move to a new dedicated disk, and the second argument is the size in MB. You should now reboot. If you are happy with the result, you can now remove /home.backup. To undo the changes remove /home, copy rename /home.backup to /home and remove the /home line in /etc/fstab."
The only problem - after I rebooted, I could not boot into Wubi. It has an error when I try, but it goes away too quickly for me to read, then it just restarts my computer. How can I fix this without having to reinstall Wubi completely? I'm willing to reinstall if it's the absolute only option, but I'm willing to try anything to get it working again. Oh, and I found another way to change the space, so no worries about that. I just have to get back into Wubi to do it...

1. How can I install ubuntu 11.04 without using wubi?
2. in ubuntu 11.04 I found "main menu" that shows a lot of applications. Some ticked some not but, when I double click one a seemingly useless window opens.
What use is this menu for, how can it be used productively as it shows all available programs.
