Just a small inquiry on how Wubi works. I've never tried it, and it states that it installs in windows? That got me thinking, is it somewhat of a "virtual box" or does it install, partition the drive, then install? I would like to know also that are ALL the features that Ubuntu has to offer installed and usable under Wubi such as advanced desktop effects.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have the Ubuntu Netbook CD. I tried installing Ubuntu by launching Wubi.exe. But nothing seems to be happening. I opened task manager and checked whether the process wubi.exe is starting. It is indeed starting up, but goes off in a few seconds.
I downloaded the wubi.exe again and tried, but without any success.
Any clues?
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 with WUBI. In the setup wizard in windows, I selected the D partition to install Ubuntu on. It extracted the files, and after a reboot, and selecting Ubuntu, the Ubuntu setup wizzard appeared. After it was done, it rebooted. I selected Ubuntu, and this appeared on my screen:

And there it stucks! I tried editing C:oot.ini, to let it select the ubuntu files.

I have very little space on my system partition (C:) So, I installed it on D:. I'm using Windows XP Professional SP2.
Will the LVPM utility move Wubi 10.04 onto a dedicated partition?

The website hasn't been updated since 8.04.
If not, is there a resource that will assist me in moving my data, settings, keyring (and programs if possible) from the Wubi install to a clean install on a new partition?
I'm planning for a transition from Lucid 10.04 Wubi to a dedicated partition for Lucid Studio 10.04, but have been using Wubi for emails, XAMPP web development, etc.
I switched to Ubuntu about a month ago and have been loving every bit of it so far Today, I decided it was time to switch from having ubuntu installed within windows (through wubi) into creating a separate partition for itself.
I tried UN-installing using the wubi-uninstaller file but that did not work. Tried removing from the Add/Remove box in Windows 7 but neither wubi nor ubuntu were listed. SO I ended up manually deleting ubuntu from the C: and then using EasyBCD to remove Ubuntu from the boot menu. It may all sound great but I noticed that my hard disk is missing around 25GB of space. I even re-installed windows 7 but that hasn't changed this. It may well be that my hard disk is just old (~2 years) but I think it maybe because of an incorrect UN-install of wubi. Having read through forum posts around the interwebs all evening, this seems to be a problem that a few people share.
ps: I intend on installing Ubuntu again once this hard disk issue is resolved!
I want to upgrade Ubuntu 10.10 installed through Wubi to 11.04. Now, Windows doesn't work. I can't upgrade Ubuntu by it because it is impossible to download files. Can I upgrade it without connecting Ubuntu to the Internet and starting Windows?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWubi doesn't let me set the swap file size, so on installation it only creates a swap file of a few hundred megabytes. Because of this, i cannot hibernate my netbook (eeePC 1005HA), which has 2 GB of RAM.
Creating a 2 GB swap file alongside of the original one using the tutorial here did work, but hibernate doesn't seem to work with it. For this reason i thought increasing the original swap's size instead of creating more would be a way to solve my problem.
i installed ubuntu desktop 11.04 on my acer aspire one 751h and found that the wifi didnt work. the netbook remix was the same so i went through all the previous releases up until 8.0.4.4 which worked fine on the live cd. so i tried to install but the installer didnt see my main hard drives only the usb i was using to install. so i tried using wubi installer which only left me with this screen when i tried to load up ubuntu.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWe have a computer lab at school that ITS is trying to get ready before the semester starts. ITS is willing to put a wubi install on all the windows 7 machines in the lab after some faculty asked for a linux option. However they don't really support linux and basically need our help if any problems arise. After getting one machine to boot up nicely they used symantec ghost to make an image and put it on all the machines (I don't know the details on this but this is what I gather). However, no machine will boot into Ubuntu 9.10 unless one edits the boot options upon choosing Ubuntu from the windows 7 bootloader. I suspect there is a subtle problem that lies from ghosting the one machine.

I want to put ubuntu on it for daily use and keep windows for games. Have done the wubi process but desktop ubuntu takes forever to boot. Ubuntu Netbook Remix seems like the best idea but I want to do it via wubi so as not to loose windows.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi tried to update on my computer when i first got it and my mouse stoped working then when my friend tried to update his it got incredibly jacked up and skiped windows boot loader and went straight to grub recovery we had to reformat the hardrive that ubuntu was on to even get it to boot to windows please help or should i just not update while using wubi? i plan on reformating in a little bit and just running windows in a virtual box for the things on windows i still use i thing everything can be happy with 3 cores and 4 gigs of ram on each side of the box right? and should i know anything about running my games through a box like will it nerf my grafix cards ability?

View 9 Replies View RelatedAlright, I've had Wubi running on my Windows 7 PC for a few months now and it's great. I had given Wubi 5GB of space when I installed. After using it for some time, I decided I wanted some more space for my Wubi install. I looked up how to do it and came across a few options. The one I chose is this one: "Download wubi-add-virtual-disk, open a terminal and run: Code: sudo sh wubi-add-virtual-disk /home 15000
Where the first argument is the directory to move to a new dedicated disk, and the second argument is the size in MB. You should now reboot. If you are happy with the result, you can now remove /home.backup. To undo the changes remove /home, copy rename /home.backup to /home and remove the /home line in /etc/fstab."
The only problem - after I rebooted, I could not boot into Wubi. It has an error when I try, but it goes away too quickly for me to read, then it just restarts my computer. How can I fix this without having to reinstall Wubi completely? I'm willing to reinstall if it's the absolute only option, but I'm willing to try anything to get it working again. Oh, and I found another way to change the space, so no worries about that. I just have to get back into Wubi to do it...

2. in ubuntu 11.04 I found "main menu" that shows a lot of applications. Some ticked some not but, when I double click one a seemingly useless window opens.
What use is this menu for, how can it be used productively as it shows all available programs.

Windows task manager shows nothing related to wubi running. Situation : I want to install a dual boot UBUNTU system on an older laptop whose CD is broken, floppy works, it's already dual partioned, the BIOS doesn't support booting to USB drives, but it can read USB drives. I've got a similar laptop that fully installed 9.1 from CD and it works fine (ubuntu only).
I figured if I could install a dual boot ubuntu on this unit via wubi, I could then delete and absorb the windows partition. However, wubi doesn't appear to run. Supposedly wubi runs on 98. I can't ever recall anything that 98 ran that ME couldn't.Except Wubi? Could it be having trouble connecting to the internet via an old browser (ie 5.5).
Wubi can't retrieve the netbook versions... any fix for this? I really don't want to use anything else but wubi. I used it on my desktop, and it was straightforward and I really prefer it (it's pretty much the only reason i'm putting linux on here lol)
