Ubuntu :: Wireless Network Is Undetected
Apr 27, 2011
My PC has 2 systems, Windows & Ubuntu. Windows can detect my wireless network but Ubuntu can't. The Network Manager does not show any wireless network. How do I fix this problem? I'm still not very good with the Linux system but I keep trying.

As an introduction to the problem I'm having: For a long time, I've been on 9.04 and my wireless worked quite happily. Then when I upgraded to 9.10, to my despair I found that my laptop no longer detects my wireless driver! Before I go on, I should also say I'm rather inexperienced with Ubuntu in general, despite having used it for quite some time.
Anyway, onto the informational part: I'm using a Compaq Presario CQ40. According to lspci, my wireless network card details are as follows:
Code:
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
lsusb shows the following:
Code:
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 03f0:171d Hewlett-Packard Wireless (Bluetooth + WLAN) Interface [Integrated Module]

I have Slackware(x32) 13.1 installed on my computer. Everything runs just fine except it doesn't seem my wireless card.I looked around and found a driver on the Realtek website. But, after I installed it, linux wouldn't boot. It would just hang. The driver did help my get the card detected, though.
On lspci, I found:
02:00.0 [Realtek company name here] RTL8101E/RTL8102E
03:00.0 [Realtek company name here] Device 8172
On windows, it said I had RTL8191SE. I am confused as to which card I have and which driver I need.I reinstalled the driver and rebooted. I then turned off my ether card via bios. Then I rebooted. Linux then booted just perfectly. However, I couldn't get the wireless to work. I was freaking and then left to go do something else with my hands. Then I realized I had the card turned off.
I mentally punched myself. >.>

I recently acquired an HP2133 netbook. It comes with SUSE 10 enterprise desktop pre-installed. WI-FI was working fine, though a slight pain for asking for the key every time. I thought I would apply all updates I could find and that may improve my networking.Having applied all I can find the wi-fi is now broken. If I use YaST I can see the Broadcom internal device seems to remain recognised, it even has the configuration I set for my wi-fi network access. The problem seems to be the NetManager applet, which denies all knowledge of wi-fi now and only has wired (which is working).Ironically the update causing the failure was applied wirelessly.I am slightly at a loss how best to proceed - I was going to cut my losses and make another boot partition with Ubuntu, but the live CD I made failed to run so that I could make a flash boot version, I shall have to return to that.
I have also now discovered that SUSE 10 is a bit long in the tooth - I sort of assumed it was current, given I bought the machine recently. So I'm wondering if it would be best to take the hit and reformat completely? I know it is broadcom, so should not be a problem, and I have been through ndiswrapper and the like in the past, though somehow I seem to have forgotten all about it now!I was happy enough with the SUSE setup and this is highly annoying as I was only updating to fix an annoyance and now the wifi has been broken... Perhaps there is an alternative applet to the netmanager that may play with the card and allow me to connect to networks?I look forward to recommendations, at this time my primary objective is to restore wifi functionality, longer term perhaps I need to review distro and installation, but I should like to do that on a dual boot basis I think

I have just installed Centos 5 on my HP Proliant ML110 G5 Server. At the install time it could not detect my DVD-ROM drive so I installed it using FTP hoping that it will make it work after installation but nope. My system is running but I cannot see ant DVD-ROM drive on my system.
It's really critical, I have lots of software to install from DVDs and actually I am relying on a shared DVD-ROM drive from another machine and it's quite slowing me.

I recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).
1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal

I am a Windows refugee who discovered Ubuntu as a way to save my files from my virus-ravaged computer. Had no installation discs for Windows, so when I had to wipe my hard drive and start over, I decided to give Ubuntu a try. I've had mixed success, but that's another post...
Right now, the problem is that I installed 10.10 two weeks ago and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems - until yesterday. Suddenly, our wireless network (the only one in the vicinity) does not come up as available in Network Manager. In fact, the entire wireless option disappeared. I know there are many posts and threads on here about this, but weeding through them trying to find an answer is more frustrating than actually dealing with the problem. I know the router works because I can post on this forum from the Macbook. I really like Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, but not being able to connect to the Internet now on top of the other issues I've had is making me doubt I want to continue down this Linux road.
P.S. When I attempted an analysis through System Testing, it said something about there being no proprietary drivers?

my wireless home network is not recognized by my network card (RealTek RTL8190 mini PCI). The post was as follows: "I am using a new computer with Windows 7 , Athlon quad core 2.60 64 bit, 8GB RAM. Internet conection works fine with ethernet but ubuntu does not see my wireless network. card (RealTek RTL 8190 ID: 10ec:8190). Have searched this forum but unable to come up with a fix. I was looking for windows XP drivers to use Ndiswrapper but could not find a list of .inf files. My network is OK and works perfectly in windows and with my 2 laptops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Additional info: install was done within Windows using WUBI to a separate partition on my HDD. I am new to this and thouroughly confused as to the procedure for installing the drivers if they are in fact available."
I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.

On Opensuse 11.2, I would like to connect my ipod touch to a wireless ad-hoc network of my laptop. I have no wireless WIFI-router at home, so I have to use the laptop as a router to the internet. I know I have to enter a static IP adres and my router's address, but where ? I haven't found any place under network tools to do this, only saw some fields with SSID's and MAC addresses to fill in.

I clicked "Network Settings", and I found that the ip address was wrong, which is "192.168.1.10/24", and netmask field is empty, so I modifed the configuration file located in /etc/sysconfig/network, named ifcfg-wlan0, added one line(NETMASK= '255.255.255.0'), saved it and reboot the system. After rebooting the system, I still found the ip address is wrong and netmask field is empty, so I have to use ifup command to activate my card manually every time the system starts.

I am having a little trouble connecting to my wireless network. Running Fedora 10 32 bit.I'm trying to connect to a hidden wireless network. I updated the firmware for my driver but apparantly the driver is still not working. Broadcom has a driver from their website for Linux 32 bit systems. Should I attempt to install it? I read a post where the driver is built into the system kernel. If so I would need to blacklist the one of the drivers. Correct?
