No matter what distro I have used, when I run a live cd/usb installer... even without installing the OS or accessing the OS hard drive, Windows 7 freezes after logging in. Running this on an Asus G73-JH, I've seen similar problems from other people with Asus notebooks, but they have actually installed the linux OS. Running Windows home premium x64

View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently got an ASUS laptop with a Core i5 processor and an ATI VGA card. I would like to install a fast distro and keep my Win7 installed. [dual boot]. I hate Windows 7 because it boots really slow even on a 64-bit system like mine (they claim it's 60% faster, and it still takes about 2 minutes to boot). So I want a distro that boots really quick (in less than 25 seconds). Also, I need it to have the very latest drivers because my laptop is quite new, and I read that the same VGA card I have already has problems when running under Ubuntu. (Not sure though)
I like programming (Python and Processing), so I did lots of research and figured out that Fedora is pretty good for programmers (it has many programming languages and IDEs already configured in the system..no need to install anything!) + I think it's pretty secure since it is based on RedHat Linux + I read some stuff about Fedora 11 and their promise to boot in less than 20 seconds, donno about 12 though? is it true anyway?
On the other hand, some say that Fedora's package management is not very cool when compared to openSuse's decent package manager and system administration tools...etc. Linux Mint looks very elegant and it can run Ubuntu's packages [I suppose] so it's another possible choice too. CrunchBang is also really attractive and minimal, they say it's also quite lightweight..so that's another possible choice for me too
My questions are:
- Which of the above distros is the fastest when booting? This matters the most for me.
- Which one has better support for the most recent drivers? especially for laptops?
Is there any other distro that boots faster than the above distros (in less than 25 seconds on a Core i5) and still has good hardware support and security? I don't really care for the distro's appearance as long as it does the job.
I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 running on my Asus laptop. I decided to install Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows, as I will need it for work. It was installed via side-by-side and re-sized the partition
The installation of Ubuntu was flawless and works great, but now when I boot to Windows, its will randomly freeze, sometimes in 1 minute, sometimes within 10 minutes.
The only way I can solve this issue, is to either perform a disk scan from windows or restore the MBR.
The disk scan works, and Windows run fine, although If I boot Ubuntu again, run that for awhile, then boot windows again the problem returns.
Restoring the MBR works as well, though without a dualboot, its useless
I have also tried EasyBCD and replaced GRUB with Windows boot manager, though same problems.
I would like to know how and if is it possible to customize a distro to run live from usb. I need to install some packages that are not default. Is it possibile? I know there is an executable that makes every distro live to usb, it's available on the ubuntu main site.

There was windows 7 Home Basic pre installed onto Hcl Desktop at my Office, then I installed ubuntu 10.04 to it, everything was ok untill I restarted. When I select windows 7 from dual boot, it takes me back to dual boot grub page. So I did inserted Windows 7 cd and restored windows by this

I'd like to put both the 32-bit and 64-bit OSS 11.3 onto a 2GB usb stick from their respective Live CD ISOs. I tried to make a partitions on the usb ( 1GB ) each, and then dd each ISO to separate partitions, make 1 of the partition bootable. But that doesn't work, even from the bootable partition. Any suggestions how to achieve that goal? Ideally there would be a main boot loader, which then provides option to boot each of the distro.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've assembled a new computer to replace a dead Xp/Debian dual boot machine. I have been persuaded to go for Ubuntu as a Linux-only box, running Win7 as a virtual machine. I had some help setting it up with two discs in a Raid1 array, and it works pretty well. One of those discs is, I notice, set up as bootable.
But.... it is causing a major headache in respect of USB when emulating windows. I cannot use devices such as my USB printer at present, and I have an urgent task which requires printing capability and Windows. I have spent time trying to sort the USB problem without success and have decided to take an alternative route for the present.
I have purchased two extra discs which are not included in the Raid array, with the intention of using one of them for a Win7 installation, making the machine dual-boot for now. Eventually the intention is to revert to Linux only with a 4-disc Raid.
And don't know how to proceed. I formatted one of the new discs to NTFS using Ubuntu's Disc Utility, and tried to install Win7 on that disc. I get a warning that Windows cannot find a suitable disc on which to install. I've tried with XP as well, and this copies all its files before proudly announcing that there is no suitable disc space on this machine. Two new 1Tb discs and no space!

I'm trying to rescue files from an Iomega NAS device that seems to be corrupted. This is the Storcenter rack-mount server - four 1tb drives, celeron, 1gb, etc. I'm hoping there's a live distro that would allow me to mount the RAID volume in order to determine if my files are accessible. Ubuntu 10.10 nearly got me there but reported "Not enough components available to start the RAID Array".

I used to have a small ubuntu partition before on this computer, but I repartitioned it to OS X only when I left it as a family computer. I had no problems with it back then (I think it was 10.04). I've tried booting with several options. Booting by typing in live or live-powerpc64 get the computer to a blue screen with the top bar and cursor, before the cursor stops moving, the computer freezes, and the fans kick up to full. Trying with video=ofonly gets the new left bar thingy to show but freezes as soon as I try to click anything.

However, my brand new install of Debian Squeeze (minimal with LXDE) is giving me crap. Alsa is up and running and some reason it doesn't want to use my SBLive... It's STUCK on my X-Fi card. Before you say take the XFi out; it's my Win 7 card.. I need to have it and don't want to have to pull it all the time...
Is there any other file like alsaconf? I don't know where to start. Maybe someone can shed some light of where I should go to attack this problem. I've never had an issue in ubuntu, fedora, freeBSD never gave me trouble. I usually simply use alsamixer to switch and never have an issue.
Is there any easy way (i.e. command or file to view) to find out what distribution I am running? I know that my /etc/apt/sources.list has entries for stable, testing and unstable but I hear that (as of the 30th) "stable" has become Sarge. So if I performed an apt-get update then an apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday should I assume that I am now running Sarge?

Now my system locks out the keyboard and mouse on the login screen...nocapslock light or anything, but I know it's still running because the clock at the bottom increments once per minute. Booting safemode does not help, it simply hangs at some point on the scrolling black screen instead.I can boot 9.04, which is still installed on another partition, just fine.Is there any way I can boot to a terminal and try running apt-get again, to see if I can fix whatever's wrong?

Those are SOHO users, so performance is not an issue, but stability is (The less I have to drive to replace faulty hardware and restore data, the better.)
Do you know if the usual suspects (Ubuntu, CentOS, Gentoo, etc.) can easily be made to run from solid-state memory, and if yes, is there some good documentation to customize them thusly?

Laptop has broken internal CDROM. I booted with floppy to get Puppy 431 installed from USB stick. Now I have USB CDROM access thru Puppy. I can mount and see the CD fine.
Is it possible to boot or install from a currently installed linux distro (Puppy)?
I have a second free partition ext2 available, sda2, and GRUB is working fine for me on boot.

First off I am new to Linux and fairly new to working in Networking and Server config's. I have been using Windows for years and have been learning Windows Server 2003 as I have a Technet account, I can get any MS software. I would like to learn Linux and use this as my Server environment. My project looks like this: I have a Quad core, 8gb machine. I want to install a distro of Linux (server or desktop) and run Virtual Machines on it.
My perferred way would be to use Virtual Box but I could use VMware products if that was better. I would like to run WS2003, WS2008, Linux Distro and anything else that will run in a VM. I can figure out that part pretty easily. I want the Linux host machine to run all these VM's and access and use them on my MAC remotely. I have done some research on ESXi as well, but I don't think my Hardware is going to support that. My exact PC spec's are:

GTX 260
I will be dual booting this machine on one of the Raptors for gaming as well.
I am attempting to get Debian+Mate running on my laptop, with no success. I have not yet used Linux, but I do wish to climb out of the Window, and the Live session seems ideal to get a feel for Debian before finally abandoning Windows.
I got the Debian+Mate ISO file from the Debian website, and created a bootable USB stick. (Note : I have done this several times, getting new ISOs, and using Unetbootin, Universal USB Installer, and Linux Live installer; the result is always the same.)
When I boot the USB drive, all appears good at first. I get to the Debian (or Mate?) screen which is a pale jade green with a white squiggle in the middle region, with a panel at the top; this shows at left three options - applications, places, and system; and at right the correct time, a sound symbol,the wifi symbol, and a battery indicator. At the left of the screen in vertical arrangement there are 4 icons labelled computer, users home, install Debian Sid, and trash. On the bottom panel, at left there is a "button" for "click to hide all windows & show desktop", and at right 4 squares for workspaces.
There are also (temporary) windows that inform me that the battery is no good (I run on mains), and that there is no wifi connection established. These windows disappear in a minute or so.
The cursor moves ok. The only actions that it creates are the information drop-down texts that tell me what the headings mean - e.g. no connections when I hover the cursor above the wifi connections symbol.
But whatever I attempt to do - selecting any of the options - nothing happens. Everything except the cursor appears to be dead.
The machine that I am using is an old laptop that I use as a second computer. It has a SIS Mirage 3 graphics engine, which I gather may be a problem. I also tried the same procedure with my fairly modern ASUS laptop (NVidia graphics) with exactly the same results; it seems that NVidia graphics may also be problematic, judging from some posts on the web. I have also tried Debian+Cinnamon, again with the same outcome.
I'm new to the Linux scene. My school computer has linux and it works great, and I'm trying to get into programming, so I figured it'd be good to switch over to Linux (plus I just got a new computer, so it's a good time).
But, I don't know much about how to install it. I've burned a live cd from sourceforge (actually 2: the newest version and one older). I shut off the computer and put the cd in the drive, and then when I turn my computer back on I get the expected menu. I choose my language, and then it brings me to a screen with a few options: "Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer", "Install Ubuntu", "Check disc for defects", "Test Memory", and "Boot from first hard disk" (plus some options at the bottom of the screen). I've tried every option on the menu, with both cds, but whenever I select anything, it freezes up right away. I've let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and nothing happens, so I'm pretty sure it's not me being impatient
I've also put the disc in while windows is running. When I double-click on my D-drive (in my computer) I get the error message "No cd detected, cannot run cd menu".
I'd be content running a different version of linux, I'd just like to have linux running (although I want it separate from Windows, I don't want Wubi). I'd like to be able to dual-boot, but I'd be willing to give up Windows entirely too. So, any ideas? Anything I can try? Oh, and I'm pretty inexperienced at this, so ask me if you need more details, and please respond in basic terms
I have a Toshiba a105-s2236 laptop and am trying to install Fedora 14. Is there any way to tell Fedora not to look for the pcmcia slots on boot? My live CD is freezing at the point where it tries to probe the pcmcia socket IO port.
I tried adding the 3 to get to a console, but that fails as well. I had to add acpi=off to the kernel boot args to even get it to go this far.
Even using the nopcmcia option, it still tries to probe the socket's IO port.
My 10.04 install freezes at about 95%, during running dpkg. I have tried again, always freezes at same point.Live CD version runs fine.Is there a 'command line' install that might help me determine which pkg is causing the problem.I had 9.10 running on the system for the last six months with no problems.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I'm running the laptop on battery the desktop freezes. It doesn't matter what program I use, it also happens when I just boot the system login and do nothing. I then have no mouse, no keyboard - so no key combination works. The only thing I can do is turn the laptop off using the power button and turn it back on. Usually the desktop freezes with in 5 min after login, but I also had one case were I was able to work for about 2 hours. When I plug in the power supply everything works fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an MSI Wind U120 netbook (Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor, 1 GB RAM). I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix. Ever since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 from 10.04, my system has experienced unrecoverable freezes when running on battery. The system reliably freezes when resuming from the suspend or hibernate modes when running on battery. It seems to load back up successfully but then freezes before I get a chance to enter my password. Yesterday and today I also noticed that the system freezes while idle and running on battery! This is even more disconcerting.
I have some experience as a Linux user (including using the terminal & editing configuration files) but not much experience as a Linux system administrator.
