General :: How To Delete All Empty Folders

Jun 7, 2010

I just had a bad experience with a server, and now i have a 17GB lost+found. It appears a lot of the stuff in there are folders which are empty. Since those really serve no purpose as far as recovering data from what I can tell, is there a slick way to delete just the empty folders from my /data/lost+found folder, leaving me with just the stuff I truly need to look through?

General :: USB NTFS Drives With Empty Folders?

Jul 9, 2011

I have a bunch of NTFS externals set up as samba shares on Linux Mint and they'll work just perfectly, but after a while they will stop functioning and the folders will be empty. It fixes itself if I restart my computer but only for a little while. This happens whether i access them locally or over the network through samba. I don't want to set the as ext3/4 because I need to access on windows from time to time (i'm dual booting) and I don't want to set them as fat32 because they I have files over the filesize limit on there.

General :: Why .tar.gzs Include Their Mount Points And Drives As Empty Folders

Sep 27, 2010

I created some .tar.gz archives, and later discovered that the archives include their mount points and drives as empty folders. How can I avoid that happening in the future? I suppose I did something wrong when creating the archives. I mean, what is the point of the archives having empty folders that represent the mount points and drives of the archived data?

Ubuntu :: New Folder Button In Nautilus?

Sep 22, 2010

I am mighty annoyed that I have to dive into the file menue to create a new folder.So I googled and found something that supposedly fixes it.:

So I tried that, for starters I only added the line

<toolitem name="Cut" action="Cut"/>

and saved nautilus-navigation-window-ui.xml again. However this has NO effect.

Theres no reason they'd get rid of that feature so I'm guessing its in there somewhere, I just can't find it.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Only Shows Folders?

Feb 24, 2010

often we need to add attachments to things, like adding a picture to a gmail when composing or to add a picture to a document. When I try to do this, nautilus shows only folders. It shows all the folders I would expect to see but none of these folders actually contain documents. If I navigate using places and open folders of course all my files are there, I just cant see them when trying to insert a file. Why might that be? Does anyone know?

I notice the "select which types of file to show" pulldown is empty - whats happened?

Ubuntu :: Nautilus - Two Folders With Same Name (One Hidden Other Shown)

Jun 5, 2010

Actually, Nautilus allows two instances of the same folder, or two folders with the same name in the same directory, as long as one is hidden (with the .prefix) and the other is shown. It happens that, if during a download (through a download manager or a torrent client) the user adds the . prefix to the download folder, another will be automatically created by the application (let's say Transmission for example) and the download would continue to that new folder. If any renaming happens (or if the original folder is restored), the download will resume to the folder with whichever initial name. Eventually, the user will be left with an unusable/corrupt complete download.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-Do To Open Folders In Nautilus?

Mar 12, 2011

I rely heavily on Gnome-Do to open folders in Nautilus.

This worked just fine in Ubuntu Desktop. However, in Openbox it opens folders in Chromium.

This is annoying for two reasons:

One, obviously i would like to view the selected folders in Nautilus.

And, two, i would like to set Firefox 4 as the browser of choice when opening anything via Gnome-Do. It is set as my browser of choice in Preferred Applications.

I have searched for configuration files, but see no entry i could modify, and would not know where to begin writing my own commands.

I am sure many people must use Gnome-Do in Openbox. If you are one of them, did you encounter similar issues? If so, how did you fix them?

Ubuntu :: Nautilus File Manager Very Slow With Folders With Many Files?

Jun 3, 2010

With Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 I have seen that the nautilus filemanager is extremely slow with folders that contains many files or/and folders.I made sure that "Assistive Technologies" is diable. On the filemanager preference I set all preview to "Never", tried all possible views, but the filemanager remains extremely slow. It seems like it becomes even slower when the subfolders in the folder you are viewing new files are being created by for example a program. Possibly nautilus filemanager is updating continuously ?

I use to be using debian etch nautilus file manager. With the same directories, nautilus in debain etch was working much faster. But contrary to the one in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 is is far less stable. It seems like the newer version is more stable but however extremely much slower. I was wondering if I am missing something. Or whether this is a bug. If it is a bug, then I am wondering when this is going to be solved in nautlius filemanager.

Ubuntu Networking :: Nautilus Doesn't See Shared Folders On Windows Box

Nov 24, 2010

I have a home network consisting of a Desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate and a laptop running Ubuntu 10.10. Nautilus won't allow me to open Windows shared folders from the browser by just clicking on the icons. That is to say, clicking on Network in the bookmark pane and opening Workgroup doesn't do anything. Sometimes I get a "can not mount: failed to retrieve share list from server" error, sometimes my Windows box just isn't visible at all. All my shared folders on the laptop are visible and rw accessible from the Windows desktop.

I should add that if I hit ctrl-L in Nautilus and manually enter "smb://<server-name>/share/" in the address bar, it mounts and opens the specified folder just fine. I have some of the folders already manually mounted to various locations in fstab.

I've found the issue with Games for Windows Live, and uninstalled that from the Windows computer. I'm not using firewalls on either computer for now to eliminate that as a possibility. Since the Ubuntu Laptop seems to be the one with the problem, I'll focus on that for now.

Code:
$ nc -zv 192.168.1.100 445
Connection to 192.168.1.100 445 port [tcp/microsoft-ds] succeeded!
$ nc -zv 192.168.1.100 139
Connection to 192.168.1.100 139 port [tcp/netbios-ssn] succeeded!

Fedora Networking :: Nautilus + FTP = Can't Delete Folders?

Mar 28, 2009

I have an FTP server on my network (currently ran on IIS). When I connect with Nautilus to FTP and try to delete folder (files delete works) I get error.I tried Filezilla and Gnome-Commander as clients - they cat delete directories just fine. I tried to solve this problem for months because I like the convenience of having my FTP bookmarked in Nautilus and use it from there.Today I finally found a reason for Nautilus not being able deletedirectories, but I can't find a solution to that. I've checked FTP logs and saw that all working ftp-clients are performing RMD on directory name only, while Nautilus always prepends directory name by / symbol. So, let's say I'm trying to delete folder call "Test"Filezilla and Gnome-Commander are logged as doing RMD on "Test", but Nautilus was logged as doing RMD on "/Test" and server replied that "/Test" folder doesn't exist

Ubuntu :: Move A File To A Nautilus Window With Folders In List View?

Nov 23, 2010

I don't know if this is a known issue, but when I want to copy/move a file to a folder containing lots of sub-folder displayed as list, I can't do a simple drag&drop, because there is no empty space to move this file. It will always go into one of the sub-folders. So obviously I have to go up one folder or to change view from list to Icon or Compact. Is it a known issue? Is there a solution? Ubuntu :: Nautilus Does Not Display Space Taken Up By SD Card?

Aug 22, 2010

I have a miniSD card that I use for my BlackBerry. It's 8GB large so I decided to put it in an SD jacket and use it in my camera.

When I plug the SD card into my computer, Nautilus and Disk Usage Analyzer show 1.4 GB yet `fdisk -l`, `df -h` and gparted all show 2.8GB being used.

Code:
$ sudo fdisk -l
{snip}
Disk /dev/mmcblk0: 7969 MB, 7969177600 bytes
221 heads, 20 sectors/track, 3521 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4420 * 512 = 2263040 bytes

[Code].....

The files shown on the disk are only 1.4GB and my BlackBerry files, yet when I put the disk into my camera, I can see the unaccounted for photos and videos.

I've used gparted to see if there was some unknown/invisible-to-nautilus partition and I can't find one (just as `df -h` says).

I tried doing a `dd` of the entire disk, but that does me no good when I mount the image... it still shows me 1.4GB.

What can I do to see the other files? I'm a computer science undergrad, so you can be as technical as you wish.

Ubuntu :: Configure File & Folders / Applications Objects To Display

May 18, 2011

It functions perfectly well, but the Files & Folders object has as a feature a 'recent' section which displays recently opened files. This is much the same as a menu object available in Gnome, except with the latter you could clear recent files for security or privacy purposes - you cannot do this in Unit.I have found that if you drag a file from the 'recent' section in the Unity Files & Folders object to Trash it doesn't just delete the shortcut - it deletes the target as well.

It is not at all clear if and how you can configure the File & Folders and the Applications objects to display what you want rather than the default, and the inability to quickly and safely clear recently opened items is something I think is in need of a fix.
