Ubuntu :: What Partitions Are Windows And Which To Delete?

I installed GParted Editor on Ubuntu. I'm looking at it. There's 4 partition selections, all apparently deletable. The problem is... I don't know which partitions are Windows. Therefore, I don't know which to delete.
None says Windows. There's the word label at the top. I do see DellUtilty and DellRestore under label on two partitions... and pretty sure my computer is a dell. Are the latter two windows and therefore can be deleted? The two remaining partitions, are Linux?

i want to boot windows from grub loader and delete linux .Is this possible?or can i keep only /boot partition so that windows boot from grub prompt i want to boot windows from grub loader and dont want any linux partitions on my machine.Is this possible?or can i keep only /boot partition so that windows boot from grub prompt and delete rest of the linux so that i can get all free space.it is not possible for my system to get windows boot loader hence i want only grub boot loader to load only windows.

I have a windows box running w2003 server on 1 volume with 2x ntfs basic partitions. c: = the windows bit, d: = the data bit for user data.I have cloned (clonezilla) the volume to another and deleted the data (d bit and want to extend the c: into the freed space.I'm booted from a partedmagicv5 cd and using gparted to attempt this.I can't see a way to do this with gparted but then, I could be thick. Maybe I clone off reformat and copy back?Is there a better way or even is this the correct forum (please don't refer me to Microsoft website:-) for this type of question?This is a test box so not worried about breaking it, but the test is to try to solve a live problem at a school I support which is running out of hd space.

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

I have Edgy on hda1, Mepis on hda2, and Hardy on hda 5 in extended part 4. Right now I can't back-up to any external drive because they won't mount. My file system on hda1 can't be checked ( i believe because of a bad UUID which I have not been able to resolve). I have been using hda1-edgy as my main system and mepis-hda2 as a back-up. But when I installed Hardy I lost my UUIDs. My resolve for this is to try to delete Hardy (hda5) leaving hda2 and hda1-edgy so that I might at least be able to mount a removable to backup hda1. then I'll reinstall edgy, Hardy...and so on until I get to something that is current. At least that's my plan thus far. But before I do any of this I need to find out where GRUB is loaded. It is not with hda1 but would like to put it there. (Is this what- Active- means in Gparted?) Any suggestions on how not to loose my current files on hda1-edgy while reinstalling?

it has ubuntu 9.10 with linux and i have no clue how to work it at all. i want to install windows xp pro but it wont read the cd. i dont know if its just my disc drive because it wont read any disc. how to delete the partitions or anything. and it also has a password on it so i cant install any programs.

I installed Ubuntu using Wubi alongside Windows 7. There were some updates that screwed things up because I didn't lock some packages and Grub or something get deleted. Anyway that got screwed up so I went into Windows and ran Wubi again. It went fine, someone told me to lock certain packages, so updates what cause issues again.
The problem is when I turn on my computer I have the choices of Windows 7, Ubuntu, Ubuntu. The first Ubuntu that got screwed app still apears there and I believe is still using the 18 gigabytes I allowed.I really like Ubuntu and I would like to install it for real with a my Flash Drive.I understand the instructions but did not do it yet because I don't know how to remove all these previous installations. Can I delete the ext and swap partitions from disk management on windows 7 ? Because I want to install a fresh new copy of ubuntu 10.10 . I know it would affect windows 7 boot up.I can handle it by system restore Anyway can I do it or not ?

I have F14 live on a USB stick and the PC boots fine from this.Now I want to install to the HDD but I need to get a handle on the existing partitions.I don't need too much space for linux, can I delete the 3rd and 4th partitions (D drive and EFI partition) and add my linux partition in this space?Investigation so far suggests that the EFI partition is not used and the D drive is empty.

i just installed ubuntu yesterday (dual boot) and ive finally decided i wanted to wipe windows xp off my hard drive first of all i know how to delete partitions and such but then i went to g parted and saw all this crazy info (screenshot posted) im really confused and down wanna end up ruining my installation.
But what i want to do is remove my xp installation merge the empty partition with my linux partition and then rebuild the grub2 config file.

I have 10.10 installed within my Windows Xp.All was fine.Then,I upgraded to 11.04.Boot screen etc is fine .Log in is automatic in Classic.Unity & Compiz not supported.Now,again everything is fine except that my xp partitions are not recognised and hence I can not mount them and access them.

I was running 11.04 as my main OS untill I installed Win Xp Pro. 50 GiB Ubuntu and 100 GiB Win Xp Pro. Now when ever I boot my computer (Acer Extensa 5620) it AUTOMATICALLY goes into the Win Xp Pro OS. So I have no idea how to access all of my Ubuntu files and programs etc. This is a really big problem as I have yet to hook up Win Xp Pro to the internet. It is an older OS and it has made things very difficult. So I really need to be able to switch OS partitions.

I know Wubi does not delete Windows or format the drive, but I have a desktop with a wireless Logitech mouse. Would Ubuntu let me use the mouse, or would it not have the driver? Also, I would like to know how to uninstall Ubuntu.

I installed a program in /usr/share on Ubuntu 10.04, but the program was actually bigger than there was room on that partition. It gave me some trouble, because when I tried to delete the folder, it said it couldn't move it to the Trash. When I restarted, it won't let me log in Ubuntu again...
Is it possible to delete this folder (/usr/share/IDE_SE) from Windows? or some other workaround to delete this folder in Ubuntu?

I have decided that Windows 7 is something that belongs MAYBE in a virtual machine and that I have no use for it. Therefore, I want to recover the 130 gigs it takes on my hard drive and add that to my Ubuntu partition.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 together with Windows 7 and when I launch Nautilus I have a list of all my (Windows) partitions in the navigation bar on the left. However I don't want to see all those partitions in Ubuntu (eg. the Windows system partition or the partition reserved for the Win boot loader. Is there a way I can control which partitions will be detected and listed for mount in Nautilus?

I need to copy ~300GB of drives from one Windows hard drive to another using a Ubuntu live CD. (I currently don't have enough power connectors for my Windows system drive AND both existing and new data drives. Stupid power supply.)
By Windows drive, I mean the drives are only data drive (no Windows install) but the files on the first drive were created and are used by my Windows system, both were formatted NTFS in Windows, and the files will again be used by Windows on the second drive.
Are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of, or can I literally just drag the files across in Nautilus? Is there a faster copy utility available (I know there are Windows programs that can copy faster than drag-n-drop, but I'm sure Ubu doesn't have the same problem ) Will using a Live CD cause any specific issues?

I've installed the last year ubuntu 8.10 on dual boot with winodows XP, but then I had to format the XP so I lost the dual boot and access to ubuntu and I used only XP...Now, I downloaded Xubuntu 9.10, when I was trying to install it, when preparing the disks a message tell me that the PC has no operating system, then when I choose to manually partion the disk, xubuntu does not read the different partition I'm having and just display the hole disk as free space

OK I'm not sure if this is a bug or not but I recently changed from 9:10 to 10:04. I did a clean install as I wanted readjust the partitions and install Windows 7 as well.
There seems to be an issue with the start up. Not every time but sometime (most of the more recently) it won't start correctly. It stops on the start up and reboots the computer. It always at one of two places either on the first Ubuntu screen during start up after the Grub loader (the purple screen with "Ubuntu" and the loading dots underneath), or if it gets past that to the loading screen it will happen after I enter my password and try to log in. If it does manage to fully boot into my desktop, it seem to work fine (aside from the odd minor bug) Also it doesn't seem to do this with Windows as of yet, though I don't use Win as much as Ubuntu.

I have Ubuntu Linux installed on a hard drive in a seperate computer. I want to transfer some stuff so I pulled the drive and hooked it up to my main machine. I then installed Ext2Explore so I could read the drive. I am able to read it now and see all of the folders but it appears that I am only able to see the main partition. With the other partitions, I see them listed in the Media folder but I click on them and they are all empty. Does anybody know how I can retrieve the data in these partitions?

2. Should i use 32 or 64 bit ubuntu? are the rules the same as for windows? where 64bit is faster and if your processor supports 64 bit u should get it?

I have been trying to put windows onto my system as I made the switch to full linux awhile ago, but the need for certain windows programs is obviously tough to break.

I am posting this information because in the other topics I have seen they always asked for them. Whenever I use Gparted though there are no options for me to make a new partition all the options are basically greyed out and I have even tried using it from gksudo. I am on an EEEpc and cant really do much from the way of live cd's as I have seen in other topics as well.

I want to make a new partition that I can read and write to from Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7. I haven't used Ubuntu much since 8.10 and it seems that I remember it being much easier to do then. I'm using this partition to store my music, pictures and videos on if that is of any relevance. I also need this to be something that can't mess up my windows side of my computer as I need that for work.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 installed and i've mounted both NTFS partitions. The first contains my Windows partition (with Windows 7 on it) and the second contains my backup partition. They are two seperate hardisks.Now, i'm trying to delete files on my Windows partition, but the ability to 'Cut' is greyed out and there's no 'delete' option at all.This only occurs on my Windows partition, but my Backup partition can execute and option; whether delete, cut etc.I assume this is either a settings in Ubuntu or something about Windows that prevents alternate O/S's from messing around with it.So how can I go about enabling the feature to delete from my Windows partition? The idea is to erase all Windows related stuff so I can reinstall Windows.

I have removed Ubuntu and I just have Windows 7 installed.
When I turn on the laptop, Grub tries to load but it fails. I have used Windows 7 install DVD and clicked into repair windows start so I should get Windows default bootloader back, but when I restart, Grub is still there...
How do I remove grub and get the laptop to boot into Windows automatically?

Note: I'm booting right now using iBoot, how do I repair this problem? I may run chkdsk, Windows asks me to run it every time I boot into it since 1 or 2 weeks... maybe it won't repair the boot loader until I ran chkdsk, I dunno
