I want to make a new partition that I can read and write to from Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7. I haven't used Ubuntu much since 8.10 and it seems that I remember it being much easier to do then. I'm using this partition to store my music, pictures and videos on if that is of any relevance. I also need this to be something that can't mess up my windows side of my computer as I need that for work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu Linux installed on a hard drive in a seperate computer. I want to transfer some stuff so I pulled the drive and hooked it up to my main machine. I then installed Ext2Explore so I could read the drive. I am able to read it now and see all of the folders but it appears that I am only able to see the main partition. With the other partitions, I see them listed in the Media folder but I click on them and they are all empty. Does anybody know how I can retrieve the data in these partitions?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI use dual boot in the lap, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and openSUSE 11.3 x64, plus another NTFS partition dedicated for data. When I browse normally with Dolphin the 2 NTFS partitions I can see and browse them, but it doesn't allow me to write data (create new files or paste) or modify saved files. It's like a read-only partition. I have to run Dolphin browser as root in order to be able to normally write and modify data. Some other pals however tell me they're able to do it without running as root, although they use openSUSE x86.

Everything runs ok and I can access my Windows folders from Ubuntu through the host directory but only as Read Only. I have checked to make sure that the Windows folder I want to access (My Documents) is not designated as Read Only in Windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am editing this post to save people time and effort. This is one of those "Pilot Error" issues or faulty readout issue, not sure which. It turns out that when I saved a document in PDF format to my NTFS Drive (the one I want to share between Windows XP and Ubuntu 10) the .PDF file extension was missing.
1. Ubuntu identified the files as a PDF document (even though the file extension was not there)
2. When trying to access it by double clicking it, the message was "Unable to open document, Permission Denied"
The problem was not permissions, and it was not a PDF file according to the default Document Viewer, but it WAS a PDF file according to the directory listing. The permissions message really had nothing to do with the problem, and identifying the file as a PDF document when it didn't have an extension, was another problem. What SHOULD have happened is a file without an extension should not be identified as a PDF file or If Ubuntu says it's a PDF file, and I double click it, why is the message "Permission Denied" ?? How about "No File Extension" or something like that?
Read the following if you want to see what my problem WAS before I just appended ,PDF to the filename, and now it works fine. On the positive side, installing XP first, then setting aside a large chunk of space for a shared NTFS drive, and THEN installing Ubuntu in the free space works fine. I installed a new 320 GB drive on laptop. Installed Win XP in 32 GB Set aside 250 GB for another Windows partition using MANAGE and formatted D: as an NTFS drive Then successfully Installed ubuntu 10 into remaining unused space. Problem: Ubuntu cannot access files from D: (NTFS Windows) partition. but it can WRITE files without problems, and create directories, just not read them. Have set properties of the Windows drive to shared, still nada. Any trick I'm missing? If I plug in an external USB drive, Ubuntu can read/write to it easily, it just can't read from the 250 GB partition formatted in Windows XP that I wanted to share between operating systems.
I'm having difficulty making my FAT32 drive capable of read/write. I followed the instructions here (http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Maverick#Windows_Compatibility) and added the following line to my /etc/fstab file:

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 2003 server with fiber attached volumes (NTFS) that I would like to mount readonly on a linux system to back it up to tape. The fiber device will allow me to present the volume R/W to one host and R/O to another, however, the R/O system doesn't see any of the changes made by the R/W server. In other words, how can I make a readonly volume refresh, scan for changes, or update without un/re-mounting it?
Is the "mount -o --bind" option what I want? From the MAN is doesn't seem right... the option "sync" seems slightly more promising but I think I'm just grasping at straws here. The best I have come up with is a cron job to unmount then mount the volume periodically.
Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Fedora 8 and we just switched over from a Windows "File Server" to Windows Server 2008 (10.1.1.17). I updated my fstab file and now when I go onto the Windows folders, I can list and read files, even save them, but new files are always read only.
fstab file (some, without the asterisks):

I've tried ntfs-3g, auto, ntfs, smb, some umask combinations, changing ownerships, changing permissions, everything I could think of, but still can't modify new files.

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

well, first of all I do not understand why it created partitions that are not mounted, that is I can only access them typing my password and they got automatically unmounted as I restart the computer
but the worse is that I cannot write on it! I completely deleted the previous partitions but, when I open it, there is still a folder "lost and found" that I am not allowed to open (+_+) and when I drag anything into the window it says "error" that is I cannot write anything on an empty partition...

View 4 Replies View RelatedI did install QLandkartGT and the plugin to use Garmin with it and it looks like it work, but when I do press "Live Log" I get the error message; "Device Link Error. Failed to request real time position. Realtime thread failed. Failed to configure USB: could not set config 1: Operating not permitted".
I also get a similar error when trying to download tracks; "Failed to download tracks. Failed to configure USB: could not set config 1: Operation not premitted".
My guess is that Ubuntu do not allow programs to use the USB port, so my question is how I do allow this program (or all) to use the USB ports.
I have what seems to be a hard disk Write speed problems with my first hard drive. Timing the cp command of a 700 Meg file takes about 8 secs from disk 2 to 3 but takes 25 minutes from disk 2 to disk 1.
Here are the details:
Kubuntu 9.04 (Kernel 2.6.28-15-generic)
Hard Disk 1 : /dev/sda (WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0)
Partitioned
/dev/sda1 ext3 / 10 Gigs

By doing 'time cp ...sdb1/test.avi ...sdc1' takes about 8 seconds and same vice-versa. the command 'time cp ...sdb1/test.avi ...sdb1/test1.avi takes about 11 seconds and the same holds true if sdc1 is used But copy sdb1 or sdc1/test.avi to either sda1 or sda6 and it takes 25 minutes. Same problem if I copy from the same drive partition (sda). I have booted a livecd Knoppix 6.2 and the same problems happens.. So safe to say it's not Kubuntu. The only thing that is left to do is backup and reformat the partitions as XFS and try again. I also did a full smartcontrol Extended test and no errors. Checked all the various logs and nothing found.
I have 4 partitions. One is Ext4 for Karmic, one is NTFS for WinXP, and the other two are Ext4 where I keep all my stuff.When I boot into Karmic and open Nautilus, none of the last three are auto mounted. When I click on one of them, instead of a window popping out asking me for a sudo password, I get a message as shown below.f I try to mount via sudo in terminal it works, but the files for me are then all read-only. Again, if I open Nautilus as root, all works fine.What I want is the following:- for all 3 partitions to automount on startup;- for all 3 partitions to be owned by me and not by root.I tried editing /etc/fstab, but to no avail. Neither did running "chown" help.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook with Ubuntu 10.10 installed in it,and a Pc with also ubuntu 10.10 in it , but x86_64.
I want to copy some iso files and data from my user home directory on the netbook , to the user home directory of the other pc , using a 8 GB usb formated in ext3 with gparted in my pc.
One iso is a windows 7 one to burn then with K3b , as i need to have windows installed in that box. Also of another iso that i have to burn too (windows 7 recovery disk) , and 3 anti-virus trials for windows.
As the usb is owned by the root (or more properly the mounting point,no?), and i can't use my user to copy data to it i usually do :
Usually , what i use is "sudo nautilus" then go to the place where is the data , copy it , and paste it then in the usb. Then in the other pc i do a chgrp and chown to the iso or file.
But , perhaps this is not the better approach. I have investigated a bit , and i think that i have found a better way , but i have some dudes.
The method is change the owner,group and permissions of the mounting point:

If i do this steps in both computers, with each user,in the netbook i can copy the iso to the usb (as fox can write to the mount point of the usb ), but can the other user in the pc 'mulder' read the iso , so be copied to /home/mulder, and then be able to burn it in k3b with success ?
I suppose that having 766 , it should be able to read it , but would have the own of the file ?
How important is not to only be able to read it , but also own it ?
I suppose if the user ID is the same , wouldn't be any problem ,as each ubuntu would supose that the file is owned by their user.
Perhaps the user name change,but if the ID is the same , the user is the same for ubuntu , not any different, no ?
sudden of all all USB drives and sticks I put into a PC will not mount with read/write permissions (they did before). I can still copy to them, but only when I am root. I am on Maverick I've noticed though that if I run disk utility, then UNMOUNT the partition, Check File System, Mount the partition back, I get read/write access..

When I installed 13.1 I chose read and write access for all users for all of these media. 13.1 will read from them, but will not write to them. How can I fix this?

Recently my Ubuntu system decided to crash. Sometimes the mouse freezes, sometimes I just can't open anything, and other times I can access the terminal but can't write. I can open files as read only both in my /home partition and in /var/log, but I can't write at all. Sometimes I get Bash: input/output error. I *can* "ls /proc", if that makes any difference.
I find that if I reboot, the problem goes away for a few minutes and then reoccurs. I can read/write to my other (windows) drive, although when I did a chkdsk in win7, I get a "An index entry from index $0 of file 25 is incorrect" message. Is the disk failing? Just a few bad sectors? Maybe the filesystem is corrupt? Why can I read but not write?
