Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Upgrade - Grub2 And Windows Partitions

May 7, 2010

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 (no fresh install, an upgrade). During the upgrade, the installer asked me for the harddisks and partitions to include. I gave him the following ones:

Harddisk 1
1. Windows XP
2. Windows 2000

Harddisk 2
3. Ubuntu 10.04

After the installation was complete, I could only start Ubuntu. Both Windows versions just showed a flashing cursor at the left upper top screen. No HDD activity! How can I get WinXP and Win2000 selectable within grub2?

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstalling Grub2 - Wipe Out Partitions

Sep 29, 2010

I am having trouble reinstalling grub so That I can see both my linux and windows partitions in the cain loader. Originally I had ubuntu, then I installed window, this wiped out grub so I had to reinstate it, and that went ok. Then I tried to get fancy and install another Linux on my machine. It did not wipe out my partitions but is defunct I have been following these instructions, [URL]

To no success. Grub2 installs fine, sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/(my part ion) /dev/sda2 and I install it to sda2, but the" Installation finished. No error reported. This is the contents of the device map /boot/grub/device.map. Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect, fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'. (hd0) /dev/sda"

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows Boot Loader And GRUB2 On Partitions

Aug 20, 2010

[URL](where loading into Windows corrupts the MBR). None of the solutions in the bug thread work for me, however--I'm on a Dell system (so it's not HP tools) and I'm not running PC Angel or any similar service (I checked). I assume it is related to the Dell recovery partition, though my old laptop from Dell didn't have this problem even though it also had a recovery partition.

However, before I had partitioned and set up Ubuntu on my new laptop, I installed Wubi (for transferring over the files from my old laptop because I didn't have time to do a full install and deal with problems like this one). Wubi worked fine using the Windows Boot Loader. I understand that WBL isn't capable of loading Linux on its own, which is why I was wondering if it was possible to have GRUB installed on a separate boot partition (not the MBR) and loaded from Windows Boot Loader. All of the information I could find on it didn't work with Windows 7--but again, I know Wubi was capable of doing it. how to set this configuration up?

Ubuntu Installation :: Delete Wubi Partitions?

Apr 8, 2011

I installed Ubuntu using Wubi alongside Windows 7. There were some updates that screwed things up because I didn't lock some packages and Grub or something get deleted. Anyway that got screwed up so I went into Windows and ran Wubi again. It went fine, someone told me to lock certain packages, so updates what cause issues again.

The problem is when I turn on my computer I have the choices of Windows 7, Ubuntu, Ubuntu. The first Ubuntu that got screwed app still apears there and I believe is still using the 18 gigabytes I allowed.I really like Ubuntu and I would like to install it for real with a my Flash Drive.I understand the instructions but did not do it yet because I don't know how to remove all these previous installations. Ubuntu Installation :: Mounting Partitions As User Rather Than Root?

I'm having a problem mounting a vfat partition using fstab... If I don't use fstab and mount it manually, everything works fine. But if I add a line to fstab, it will mount, but will have root permission only - so I can't write to it. can mount another partition (ext4) through fstab and everything works fine. Just not sure why there's a problem with the vfat partion. Also, if after mounting it through fstab I try to unmount it, it gives an error saying only root can unmonut it.

General :: Delete OS From Disk And Grub2?

Sep 1, 2010

Originally, computer had 20GB drive dual boot WinXP and LinuxMint using so-called grub legacy. I upgraded another WinXP machine by cloning its 120GB drive to a new 250GB drive. I put the 120GB in the Linux machine and gparted it to free 40GB. I tried loading Ubuntu 10.04 Studio in 10GB partition. Something went wrong during software unpacking phase and was left with commandline (c/l) 10.04. Kept 10cl in the partition. Tried again in new 10GBpartition to load Ubuntu 9 Studio - success. Grub2 is now new bootloader. Boot options = c/l 10.04, 9 Studio, XP from 120GB, LinuxMint, and XP from 20GB. The 120XP is unbootable (HardwareAbstractionLayer problem I expect). Tried to install 10.04 (regular not studio) over c/l 10.04 but managed to install in addition to i.e. did not overwrite. But otherwise 10gui install is ok. FYI: Grub2 is the initial boot loader however selecting LinuxMint on orig 20GB drive shows grub = legacy in LM (grub -v) term box, the Ubuntus on the 120 show grub 1.9x in term.

I wanted to delete 10cl from disk and grub. Originally intend to gparted->delete partition from U10gui then run grub update but could not because a partition (i.e.10gui) on the target disk was mounted. So I booted into LM and deleted 10cl partitions (ext and swap). That was a bad move! Could not boot machine - grub2 would not boot because 10cl partition was not found. It left me at the "grub rescue" prompt. I wound up reinstalling Linux to the empty partitions.

How do I delete the 10cl o/s from grub and the disk?

Later I will want to delete unbootable 120WinXP o/s from grub and the disk. However, with the WinXp, I will want to keep the data and just delete the o/s.

Ubuntu :: Reinstall It But Delete Partitions First?

Nov 28, 2010

I have Edgy on hda1, Mepis on hda2, and Hardy on hda 5 in extended part 4. Right now I can't back-up to any external drive because they won't mount. My file system on hda1 can't be checked ( i believe because of a bad UUID which I have not been able to resolve). I have been using hda1-edgy as my main system and mepis-hda2 as a back-up. But when I installed Hardy I lost my UUIDs. My resolve for this is to try to delete Hardy (hda5) leaving hda2 and hda1-edgy so that I might at least be able to mount a removable to backup hda1. then I'll reinstall edgy, Hardy...and so on until I get to something that is current. At least that's my plan thus far. But before I do any of this I need to find out where GRUB is loaded. It is not with hda1 but would like to put it there. (Is this what- Active- means in Gparted?) Any suggestions on how not to loose my current files on hda1-edgy while reinstalling?

OpenSUSE Install :: Delete .config Just To Login?

Nov 27, 2010

Well, I decided enough of the "cute" OSs and installed OpenSuse 11.3 as my sole OS.

I have installed three times today. The install goes well, no issues there, however, after the install, I run Updates and once that's complete, I reboot and that is where the trouble starts.

The first 2 times, (I installed with Auto-magic Login enabled) all I could get was a black background and what the Mac community calls the "spinning wheel of death". Well since I automatically logged in I could not determine if it was a System issue or a Profile issue, hence the re-install.

I first thought it was a kernel update problem, but hey, the system boots, so that didn't seem logical.

I had on this install had it happen also, but I (thankfully) was able to graphically login as root and delete my /home/jj/.config and /home/jj/.gconf (going by previous experience with a similar issue on other OSs).

I notice that after the install and during the update that my Desktop Effects turned themselves off. I know this because Docky tells me so when I run it. Another issue is I run kmahjongg or kbounce (Wife's Games) and the TitleBar is missing so this forces me to (re)run metacity --replace to get WM handles back.

Everything is stable at the moment, but I hesitate to reboot the system.
I have logged out and back in with everything being retained.
