View 9 RepliesAt my grandparents house, there is a Wi-Fi network that we can (sometimes) connect to. However, it lately hasn't been allowing our Win 7 laptops to connect. It does let my Wii and my iPod Touch connect with no problems. I've tried restarting, but that doesn't work. We don't have access to the router, so we can't reset that. I would really like this fixed since mobile Safari is not the best browser in the world and WiiNet is even worse..
Note: Neither of the laptops are mine (one is my sister's and one is my parents'). I would never allow a computer of mine to use such an operating system.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 yesterday, this is my first experience of Linux so I am a noob and have no idea how to go about troubleshooting this myself. I have been googling and searching forums for ages and have read a lot of threads of people having problems getting connected but have still to find anyone with the same issue I am having.
I managed to connect without any problem and I am not being periodically disconnected (which seems to be a frequent problem) but when I enter an address in firefox or click a link there is a 20-40 second delay before it will take me to the page, but once I am on the page if I click another link it will take me there straight away (as long as I am in the same tab, if I switch to a different window I have the 30 second delay again). Same with downloading files, when I click a download link it takes about half a minute to register that I have clicked, but once it establishes the connection my speeds are the same as they always are. speedtest.net is showing 8mbps, and the last file I downloaded came through at 900kbps once the connection established. It is very irritating since other than that I am loving Ubuntu and the more I read about Linux the more I want to drop my windows 7 altogether (running dual boot just now).
I'm getting these strange answers from opera when I ask it what speed for download does it have. I am downloading fedora using ubuntu right now. Why opera tells me it's downloading with almost 200kb/s while the system monitor from ubuntu can't pass more than 110kb/s ...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI usually start up my Internet service by typing ./rc.inet1. While its connecting I usually see my routers ip address then I connect and I start browsing and everything is fine. A few times I noticed that instead of seeing the routers address it showed some other address and I could not get online. I try ./rc.inet1 stop and renew but still cannot connect, I reboot and I then see the router and I can connect. I am using slackware13, and opera10 browser.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using Kubuntu 9.10 and I have a problem with my screen. I use the nvidia driver downloaded from the website, installed manually as I always do. I wanted to update it, but when I press ctr-alt-F1 to go to the console to stop kdm, I cannot see the usual black screen, but only a very strange blinking screen with lines and colours, strange symbols like $ & %. This happens for every F1 until F6, then F7 luckily brings me again on the graphical desktop.
I tried to install the drivers from the "Hardware drivers" manager in Kubuntu, but nothing changed. I don't know if it's an issue related to the kernel or to the driver. But I don't know how to update it without F1 console, and however it's a serious issue because I cannot do anything in case of desktop failure. The kernel is the last officially released (I don't use the proposed repos), that is 2.6.31-19.
I have recently upgraded to 11.4 and also had to renew an AP (HP ProCurve 10ag). This was several years old but replaced an identical model which had been working well until recently. I thought it would be appropriate to flash newer firmware as the device four releases behind the times. The access point serves partner's XP laptop and my openSUSE 11.4 laptop and after flashing the firmware both machines would make a connection and then break and remake, to the extent that the openSUSE machine became unusable. I thought it was an encryption problem and spent hours changing the AP and Client setups to no avail
After reading a thread here I checked out dmesg and this is what I found:-

I've been working on getting Linux on this iBook I have. It's running fine HOWEVERThe screen is split up in a rather strange way.I've drawn a diagram, but I can't post it due to the fact I haven't made 15 posts yet.I have a full working desktop in the top left.About 2 inches of the right are just black, and I can't move my mouse over it.Under the address bar, there is a mysterious white line, that extends into the black.Under that, there is the top 2 inches of my desktop being shown again.

After I ssh'd back in to the server, I can no longer attach to that screen. screen -ls shows that the screen is already attached. I tried screen -D to force detach it, and it said detach but screen -ls still says it's attached. I tried screen -x and it just hangs there.

I just got a wireless dongle because in my house wired is not possible, but now I am getting problems. The dongle is a tp-link that turned out to be plug&play (unlike windows) and seems to work perfectly, except when the screen locks. I have tried to download overnight several times and it seems like a few minutes after the screensaver comes on or after I lock the screen, the connection is dropped. It works completely fine normally. So what changes when Ubuntu (its maverick with all updates) locks the screen? Also, when I log back in, I have to unplug the dongle and plug it back in to get it to connect again.
This is really REALLY annoying, enough to make me switch back to windows if I can only download while I'm looking at the screen.
I've noticed that after updating opensuse to 11.2 from 11.1 vino is slighly different by its layout. Is there big changes in vino?My problem is that when I connect to vnc (from windows with tightvnc viewer), it asks password normally, and let me log in, but when the screen has "rendered" from up to down, it doesn't update it any more. It let me move the mouse, and if I test it locally from other computer in LAN, I see the mouse moving and text appearing when typing and windows moving when moving, but no changes in vnc viewer screen! I mean it doesn't update the differences at all. What could be the problem? I tried out realvnc as well, but it seems it is not in the viewer. Is it in vino? I have correct ports open and so, just like before. It worked in 11.1 but not in 11.2

uname@Sol:~$ set |head -200
BASH=/bin/bash

I had an odd thing occur after a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. I installed Windows 7 on its partition, and all went fine. Then I installed Ubuntu on its partition and everything was as it should be. Then I did the Ubuntu updates and now my boot window looks like this ... I can click on any of the Ubuntu logins and it takes me to the same place.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI noticed yesterday, after what must have been the most recent updates, that my display now has a dark striped bar running down the right hand side of the display. It runs between the indicator applet and the deleted items bin on my standard Gnome desktop. I know it's not my monitor since I can see both of those items but maximised applications will not fill this area, even though the cursor is visible there.I've tried changing a number of display options but to no avail.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAbout an hour ago I completed the Network upgrade to Maverick from Lucid. Immediately I see some changes over Lucid: my computer can now hibernate successfully, a feature that worked in Hardy, but was broken in Karmic and Lucid. But a small annoyance is the strange colors. There is an abundance of purple colors in icons, in links, in indicators. I have attached a small snapshot of my browser. The circled purple area should be blue in normal contions.

I upgraded to Ubuntu to 11.04, but when I now open firefox and go to localhost, some PNG images have really strange colors. This is not the case when I display the webpage in Google Chrome. I'm not sure if I will have similar problems with all PNG's, but I wouldn't be surprised. For instance, a random PNG in Firefox 4:
And the same image in Chrome: What could be the problem? How do I solve this? This only seems to hapen with alpha transparent images!
why this command would appear in my terminal? What does it do? I did not enter it. sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/* /dev/seq*

I've poked around in the .evolution/ folders and can't find the right thing to delete to get rid of this specific email.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have encountered the strangest bug, filled with so many inconsistencies that I am unable to comprehend why or how it is happening. It has only happened once and whilst it seems to resemble another bug that I found when looking for this one, it is fundamentally different. Here are the facts:1. I am using an Acer Aspire One netbook.2. This netbook is running Ubuntu 9.10.3. It has been running Ubuntu 9.10 since the first time it was released as stable.4. Yesterday, whilst I was engaging in an intellectually stimulating debate through the convenience of Pidgin, I encountered the said bug with the following attributes:The keyboard has the appearance of not working.
But if one applies a lot of pressure to each key, one is able to type. This bug is not resolved by a system reset. This bug does not affect my BIOS or even Ubuntu until I log into the particular account where it first happened. When I log out of the account and log into another one, my keyboard is perfectly responsive. When I log back into the "damaged account", the keyboard is once more unusable. The right click menus do work, in stark contrast to another, similar bug, the report of which I encountered in my search for this one.So, clearly, an undesirable workaround would be to migrate to a new user on my system. This, however, does not change the fact that I do not wish to do this another time if the bug repeats itself. Furthermore, if it is only active in a session of the "damaged account", it is likely that it is a configuration error of sorts, no? I have another strange configuration error on that account. The little icon that allows me to choose to which wireless network I wish to connect is random in when it chooses to appear or not, although the service is active (as I am greeted with a message directing me to click on the non-existing icon in order to select the network...). Yet again, this only happens when logged into a particular user, while other users seem completely unaffected.
What I conclude from this is that Ubuntu's configuration system is pretty erratic and it makes seemingly random yet seemingly irreversible changes to user configuration. I would not even know where to start when faced with reading through different configuration files. Furthermore, I would feel as though my PC were constantly working against me. It is a strange feeling, when I bought it with the intention that we might work together.
For some reason whenever I load gnome-terminal using 9.10 I get this message:
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.
I use Lucid x86_64. Lately I have been getting the following message referencing the mounting of my flash drive on start-up: "The disk drive for /media/UDISK is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery." I hit skip and and Lucid continues to boot fine, and the flash drive is mounted and working properly after booting. How can I get rid of this message?
View 2 Replies View RelatedPretty sure it's Compiz, as when it's acting up if I try something simple like switch workspace, things lock up. A gdm restart can recover from that condition. So after a reboot, log in and start something benign like Firefox (doesn't matter what you start). The window will 'paint' from the bottom up over a period of a few hundred milliseconds. A significant fraction of a second, though. All window operations have this delay.A small window near the top of the screen exhibits a delay as if the entire screen below it had to 'repaint' before it can be displayed.
If you then lock the screen and return to the same session, everything seems to work as normal.lternatively, you can log in as another user... same effect there... return to session 1 and everything is normal. Return to session 2 and everything is normal. It seems that returning to gdm's login screen and back fixes it.So just when you log in for the first time, this annoying paint issue appears. As mentioned, if you try to use any sort of compiz effect, that session is frozen.Usually, things are ok - even if you log out and back in - until the next reboot.
When this first started happening, I would log out/back in and the effect would sometimes fix itself. But not always. The key difference between that and the 100% fix above is that you don't log out above. The session remains logged in. Also, I tried switching to a console and restarting gdm. That also works sometimes, but not always. I would also try starting Nvidia X Server Settings tool before logging out and it seemed like that increased the chances of success. But I'm not sure it did. It does seem that once it's fixed, it stays fixed until the next reboot.Sorry for the lengthy post, but I warned you I wasn't sure how to describe it. I've upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and everything works fine but. I use skype (2.1.0.81) a lot and I can make calls and receive them as normal with normal mic/sound levels. When I get a notification the sound is so faint its almost inaudible. Clicking "Test sound" in notifications has the same effect - almost inaudible sounds (I thought they were not working at all until I turned the volume right up).
I tried completely removing and reinstalling skype through synaptic to no avail. All the Sound devices in skype are set to "PulseAudio Server (local)" - there are no other options coming up. "Make a test call" works fine and the skype sounds are all at the expected level. Real calls are fine too, so long as I notice them and respond. "Make a test sound" is silent.
Likewise, testing the event in Notifications plays the sound really quietly. Allocating different sounds makes no difference - the level is still really low so I can't work around the problem that way. Anyone know how I can correct the ringer volume without blowing out my eardrums on an actual call?
Today I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and I notice that the rename function is different from before.
Now it select all the filename including the extension while before it select only the filename. How can I fix this problem? It's very uncomfortable rewrite the extension everytime or remove the extension from the selection.
