Ubuntu Networking :: TP Link TL-WN722N Strange Connection?

Nov 2, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 yesterday, this is my first experience of Linux so I am a noob and have no idea how to go about troubleshooting this myself. I have been googling and searching forums for ages and have read a lot of threads of people having problems getting connected but have still to find anyone with the same issue I am having.

I managed to connect without any problem and I am not being periodically disconnected (which seems to be a frequent problem) but when I enter an address in firefox or click a link there is a 20-40 second delay before it will take me to the page, but once I am on the page if I click another link it will take me there straight away (as long as I am in the same tab, if I switch to a different window I have the 30 second delay again). Same with downloading files, when I click a download link it takes about half a minute to register that I have clicked, but once it establishes the connection my speeds are the same as they always are. speedtest.net is showing 8mbps, and the last file I downloaded came through at 900kbps once the connection established. It is very irritating since other than that I am loving Ubuntu and the more I read about Linux the more I want to drop my windows 7 altogether (running dual boot just now).

Ubuntu Networking :: Strange Connection On Windows 7?

Apr 23, 2011

At my grandparents house, there is a Wi-Fi network that we can (sometimes) connect to. However, it lately hasn't been allowing our Win 7 laptops to connect. It does let my Wii and my iPod Touch connect with no problems. I've tried restarting, but that doesn't work. We don't have access to the router, so we can't reset that. I would really like this fixed since mobile Safari is not the best browser in the world and WiiNet is even worse..

Note: Neither of the laptops are mine (one is my sister's and one is my parents'). I would never allow a computer of mine to use such an operating system.

I usually start up my Internet service by typing ./rc.inet1. While its connecting I usually see my routers ip address then I connect and I start browsing and everything is fine. A few times I noticed that instead of seeing the routers address it showed some other address and I could not get online. I try ./rc.inet1 stop and renew but still cannot connect, I reboot and I then see the router and I can connect. I am using slackware13, and opera10 browser.

Debian :: Strange Link Gets Me To Different Sites?

Apr 19, 2010

Trying again here.. no-one on reddit seems to respond..It initially happened here (it was deleted, you can try the lower links.) Sometimes one, sometimes both of these links gets me to 'attack sites', it starts with both, then to one, and then neither does it. I am on Debian Lenny, Both Iceweasel 3.0.6-3(firefox), epiphany2.22.3-9, elinks0.11.4-3 and firefox 3.6.3 sometimes do this for me. It doesn't seem to happen if you enter it into the adress bar, but it does when you follow it by clicking.[URL]..Someone else reported it too, from XP w/ Firefox. The adress bar tells me it is subreddits.org the but the screen doesn't. (Worry my computer is compromised..)

Links it send me too, something on 89.248.174.24, orcug.com, thindx46td.xorg.pl and a whole range of varying other sites. http://i.imgur.com/d7ZGv.png So can you reproduce/any idea what this could be? I do worry about having some malware on firefox and such, also besides this, but as i said, it happens with other browsers. I have add-on flashblock, noscript, redditreveal, socialite, trackmenot, had tree style tab until i found it wasn't usefull enough. I also noticed that control+k gets me to bol.com (wtf is up with that??), and there was the random site you get to when you misclick.(Which i was able to disable.) I am gradually getting more and more pissed off and suspicious about firefox. (as on my computer.)

Firefox also seems start reading/writing from disk suddenly. (I use iotop when i think it shouldn't be writing sometimes.) Perhaps i should try set something up to record what writes to disk.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wireless Connection To D-Link DSL-2680

Feb 13, 2011

I've just received a new router from TalkTalk - a D-Link DSL-2680 - and was very pleased to find that after I plugged it in I could wirelessly connect straight away with my laptop. However since I first disconnected I have been unable to connect again since and have had to resort to a wired connection. I have been using Ubuntu for several years now and am very pleased with it, especially given my relatively low knowledge of computers.

My system is as follows:

IBM T42 laptop

Ubuntu 10.10 - I was running V9, but upgraded as some discussions suggested this might be an issue The wireless adapter is built in to the laptop, and I'm not even sure how to find out what it is It may be a problem with the DHCP server on the router rather than a problem with the laptop.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Network Connection Lowers Link Speed Repeatedly

I believe I'm running Kubuntu 10.04, but don't quote me on that. Here's the version string from dmesg. Linux version 2.6.32-31-generic (buildd@crested) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu 4.4.3-4ubuntu5) ) #60-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 17 22:15:39 UTC 2011 (Ubuntu 2.6.32-31.60-generic 2.6.32.32+drm33.14 I have an emergent problem with my wired ethernet resetting the connection on a frequent basis. When it resets it re-negotiates the link speed and I often end up with a 10Mb/s link and on some occasions a 100Mb/s. The configured speed for the link is 1000Mb/s full duplex using a preup ethtool command. I do not use NetworkManager but have the interface configured in /etc/network/interfaces.

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount To Vista Needed For Apache - Symbolic Link Not Allowed Or Link Target Not Accessible

Apr 26, 2010

I have a problem where I'm using Ubuntu linux to mount a Windows Vista machine's USB drive and access it on the web using Apache. I did have the USB drive plugged into the Linux machine directly and that was working via the web. FollowSymLinks is on in httpd.conf

[Code]....

The mount works and I can see the files (see above) from my regular linux user account. If I make a test file in /mnt and soft link to that, I can see it on the web. So it's just the mount to the vista machine that seems to be a problem. It's supposed to be a simple read-only mount and the apache login should (I think) be able to see the same generic root access permissions.

log from apache: [Mon Apr 26 20:39:42 2010] [error] [client 99.99.99.99] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /home/user1/pub_html/Music, referer: https://xx.xx.xx/~user1/music.html

The credentials have a login and password that matches a special read-only account on Vista. I can see the files on the system from Linux, but not via the web. As mentioned above, a different link to the same /mnt area works fine via the web. I've tried several different mount options with no success.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Strange WiFi Behavior Breaks Connection Repeatedly

May 30, 2011

I have recently upgraded to 11.4 and also had to renew an AP (HP ProCurve 10ag). This was several years old but replaced an identical model which had been working well until recently. I thought it would be appropriate to flash newer firmware as the device four releases behind the times. The access point serves partner's XP laptop and my openSUSE 11.4 laptop and after flashing the firmware both machines would make a connection and then break and remake, to the extent that the openSUSE machine became unusable. I thought it was an encryption problem and spent hours changing the AP and Client setups to no avail

After reading a thread here I checked out dmesg and this is what I found:-
[78.639247] wlan0: authenticate with 00:1d:b3:4b:ae:14 (try 1)
[78.640804] wlan0: authenticated

[78.652283] cfg80211: Calling CRDA for country: DE

This went on and on.

Ubuntu Networking :: Strange Behavior With Pings From Desktop?

Mar 9, 2011

I've been trying to use MySQL in Ubuntu but I've been having some connection issues and in trying to troubleshoot that, I observed this strange behavior with pings in Ubuntu Desktops inside our network.

- All Ubuntu Servers we have (10.10 and 8.04) behave as expected
- All Windows machines behave as expected
- All 5 Ubuntu Desktops we have, (10.10 and 9.10) exhibit the following unexpected behavior:

If they have a local ip addresses and are connected within the internal network, either to a switch or directly to a router, pings take much longer to be sent. It's not a higher lag, it's the time between each ping that increases. I have to wait for around 5 seconds for each ping, but the time in the ping reply is less than 100ms, also they're all in order so I assume it's the system delaying the sending of each ping.

If I plug a USB 3G modem directly then it works as expected again (~1 sec between each ping sent). Is this an intended feature, that depends on the network environment, or is this something I should look into more closely?

64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=0.033 ms
64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=0.044 ms

^C64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=5 ttl=64 time=0.042 ms

The IP says its 127.0.0.1 (home) WTF is going on>. Why has PEGASUS been assigned 2 ips, and when pinging using HOSTNAME why does it point to home?

General :: Slackware Internet Connection W/ Intel 6050 Link Wifi/wimax Card

Feb 20, 2011

I'm a Linux newbie. Used to use Ubuntu, but I switched to Slackware because I want to learn how Linux works better.

On my Samsung qx410 laptop, I can't connect to the internet. I went to the System Settings -> Network Settings and all the tabs there, but it wouldn't detect any connection, wireless nor wired.

I noticed that the kernel of Slackware 13.1 is out of date, so I tried compiling a newer one, but I couldn't get that to work.

I tried downloading this file: iwlwifi-6050-ucode-41.28.5.1.tgz but even after reading the readme, I had no clue how to go about installing it or even whether it was the right thing to install in the first place.

How can I get my internet working?

Networking :: Strange Martian Behavior When Using Switch Vs Hub?

May 21, 2010

I have an old PC running an older version of linux with two network cards serving as my firewall router. The network cards are netgear 310tx cards. Noticed traffic was not getting routed at times. Figured my switch was going bad, so I hooked up an old hub to keep keys systems communicating while I get a new switch. No problems with hub, but only has 5 ports.

Get new switch (different make/model from old one), install, a couple of my systems have connectivity problems, but others do not. Thinking it was a bad switch, returned it, got a new one just like my old one (which I thought was going bad, but worked for several years). Hook it up, paying attention to my firewall console and notice martian header messages. Network traffic not getting routed at all. The interface for connected to LAN was slow to get started (my firewall can communicate to the Internet, but LAN communication was hosed).

System would "hang" spitting out martian header messages until I disconnected LAN cable. Thinking network card may be bad, replaced it with another version of the same type. Same problems: martian header messages and traffic not getting routed.

HOWEVER, if I remove the switch and use my old hub, no problems. Networking appears to work for all systems connected to hub. Since I and my wife work from home, I'm using the hub right now (with non-essential systems not connected due to limited ports). I can only do any real experimentation at night.

I have no idea why things would work differently between using a hub vs a switch. Could something have gone awry with the linux kernel (2.4.20-46.7)?

Networking :: Can Ping But Can't Wget / Strange Network Behavior

Apr 28, 2011

I have a small ARM machine running an Arch linux variant, PlugApps. It was set up and working fine at my home, with a standard networking setup -- cable modem and router. I could do pretty much anything I needed to access the net fine. This machine is a remote monitoring system for another location. I shipped it to that location and am now trying to get it set up using another set of hands on site. There it is on the network behind a dsl modem and a router. I forwarded ports from the dsl modem to the router and from the router to the ARM computer.

In both cases the ARM machine is/was configured to use dhcp.So here's the deal:I can ssh into the ARM machine just fine.I can ping hosts on the wan fine (eg: stanford.edu).BUT:wget fails for not being able to resolve a valid address (eg: http://checkip.dyndns.org)the PlugApps package management system (pacman) cannot resolve the repository address the openntp time sync isn't working On the new network, I am able to connect to another client windows PC which has the same associated network info (Bcast address, Mask, etc. - comparing windows "ipconfig" vs linux "ifconfig" outputs) but which can resolve addresses for web browsing, etc. What am I missing? If it can resolve addresses for pings, why can't it work for other address requests? If I can ssh interact with it, why can't it connect to the net for other purposes?

Slackware :: Strange Networking With Slack 13.1/pfsense Router?

Jan 25, 2011

I opened a thread on the general networking section of the forums to discuss about a problem I am experiencing with a newly installed slackware 13.1 (not 64b) on my dell laptop. Basically, the machine is not getting an IP from the dhcp server on my pfsense router. All other machines on my network are still getting IP's fine, and the pfsense box never changed. I can get an IP from the pfsense box by manually loging as root and using /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 eth0 restart (note the argument eth0 necessary to get the ip).

User markush at the link below suggested I open this thread here, I think its a great idea since I believe it is a slackware problem. he also recommended to use tcpdump to diagnose the connection problem. Here's the results:

I issued the dhcp renewal commands in a terminal and monitored the output of tcpdump in a different terminal.

Code:
root@xpsm1730:/home/lpallard# /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart
Polling for DHCP server on interface eth0:
dhcpcd: version 5.2.2 starting
dhcpcd: eth0: waiting for carrier
dhcpcd: timed out

[Code]....

I believe the router is fine since all other machines are all using slackware 13.1 (one slackware 32bit and the other slackeware 64) and are all handshaking perfectly with the pfsense box.

I also believe the kernel on the faulty machine is OK since I am using the very same kernel(2.6.37) on the machine running slack64 and this machine is also handshaking perfectly with my pfsense box.

Please see http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...get-ip-857683/ for more details.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: D-Link USB Wireless .11n Dongle Configured, But No Connection?

Apr 27, 2010

I recently bought a D-Link DIR-655 router capable of 802.11n operation, upgrading from a DIR-624 router only capable of 802.11g operation. While my overall setup uses wired connections, other people in the house prefer wireless, and the upgrade was undertaken more for a hoped for increase in wireless range, rather than the possibility of increased speed, since the router is located to accommodate the wired connections. However, to test the 802.11n operation I bought a D-Link DWA-130 USB dongle for my now 5-year old laptop, which comes with an otherwise satisfactory 100Mbs ethernet port(eth1) and an 802.11g wireless card(eth0). By checking the dmesg | grep firmware output after I plugged in the dongle I determined that the necessary firmware was rtl8192sfw.bin, which I found on the web, and downloaded into the directory /lib/RTL8192SU.

A subsequent reboot and then YaST > Network Devices > Network Settings showed the device as wlan0, but not configured. I changed the Network Setup Method to ifup (since I can see no way to do a device configuration in Network Manager), and configured the device, and at the same time deleted the configuration for the existing 802.11g wireless card(eth0). I then rebooted, went back into YaST to confirm the wlan0 device was configured and the 802.11g device (eth0) was not, changed the Network Setup Method back to Network Manager, rebooted again. Making sure that the router was set to only transmit/receive using 802.11n I then typed iwlist scan. To my surprise, the output showed first that the supposedly unconfigured eth0 device seemed to be still active, for it found my home network, and claimed that the protocol used was 802.11g. On the other hand, the newly configured wlan0 device produced the message: "Interface doesn't support scanning: Network is down".

First, should I expect iwlist scan to work for a device that shows as unconfigured? And even if it should work, shouldn't it show 802.11n as the protocol, assuming that the router is in fact telling the truth? Is there any independent means to determine if the router is only using 802.11n as it claims? Second, the overall goal is to make the wireless network in the house 802,11n only, and since the dongle is backward compatible with 802.11g, I would expect to permanently unconfigure the eth0 device and use the dongle, both here and on the road. I do not need two wireless connections on my laptopThe laptop is running SuSE 11.2 as of about a month ago. Programming :: Link Directories - Symlink Not Updated / Hard Link Not Supported?

Sep 6, 2010

In the ordering of files I keep I need links to directories. Sometimes I even need to move directories to new locations. I have tried using symlinks, but they become dead when I move the directory they point to. I have tried hard links, but I haven't found any Linux file system that would support hard linked directories. How can I achieve that a complex structure of directories (currently with symlinks for directories and hard links for files) keep symlinks live when directories are moved?

- is there any utility that updates symlinks when a directory is moved?

- is there any Linux filesystem that supports hard linked directories?

- is there any good Linux interface to the new NTFS (the only file system I know to support automatically updating directory links, called directory junctions)?
