Ubuntu :: Setup A Putty Session To Putty From One Machine To Another?

May 15, 2010

I am trying to setup a putty session to putty from one Ubuntu machine to another. I know how to setup to connect to the machine from Windows and I am using the same settings for the one I am trying on the Ubuntu machine but it fails to connect. It fails immediately so I believe that putty is not able to find ssh. Is there some configuring that I need to do.

What is the easiest way to use SSH over the internet with Putty? I have a Symbian phone with Putty installed and I was hoping I might be able to run some commands remotely on my 10.04 desktop with it. I've found a few tutorials but it seems like they deal with local networks and not over the internet.

Ubuntu Security :: Allow SSH Tunnel Through Ufw Firewall?

I have set up a Ubuntu 10.10 server. I have been using ssh tunnels to encrypt my web traffic at public wifi. I am trying to make this server as secure as posible so I enabled ufw. I allowed SSH and HTTP traffic in and denied everything else. But when I do that I can not use SSH -D because when I try to visit a webpage it does not load and I get the following.

Code:
uname@mybox:~$ channel 3: open failed: connect failed: Connection timed out
^C
uname@mybox:~$ fclchannel 4: open failed: connect failed: Connection timed out

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Create SSH Tunnel

Aug 3, 2011

I wanted to create an ssh tunnel but I do not know what commands to run .. my environment is as follows:
LAN Internet Office LAN
Home PC <-> Linux firewall <-> http server..

According to the above what I figure is that I have an internal web server at my job and I need to create a tunnel to access the web server from my PC in my home. I know I can do a port forwarding with the firewall but I don't want to publish this web server to Internet. My home PC and both servers (firewall and web) are ubuntu. My idea is create a ssh tunnel that forward port 8080 on localhost in my home pc, to the firewall (obviously with public ip), and the the firewall forward to port 80 on office web server at my job. Note that the firewall accepts ssh connections to port 22, same for web server...

Ubuntu Servers :: Mounting A NFS Share Through SSH Tunnel

Jan 12, 2010

Hi, I have a server at my home which is a Ubuntu 9.1 which is setup as a NFS server using NFS v3. I am also using DYN DNS to access my home server remotely from another location using SSH. Everything works good, I can sucessfully log in to my server from my laptop via SSH, however my problem mounting my NFS share which consists of appx. 300 mp3 files. My question is:

1 How Do I Tunnel a NFS share through a SSH tunnel?

2 Is there any other configuration? needed to be done to the router?

3 is there anything needed to be configured to the server or my laptop?

4 Manual mounts is fine for me I don't care about automounting.

I just want to be able to mount the NFS share via the SSH Tunnel and play my music and access other files from my server.I just need the steps to set up this connection.

Ubuntu :: Create SSH Tunnel Before Login (Presession)?

Jun 15, 2010

Just give you the background:1) Let's call the two machines, Box A and Box B.2) OpenSSH is running on both machines.3) Key based authentication is setup between two users on these two machines, and both can login into the other with: "ssh user@host" with no problems at all.4) I'm also port tunnelling over SSH to encrypt some traffic between the two machines: "ssh -f -N -L 1000:HOSTNAME:1000 user@HOSTNAME"I can obviously then use "localhost:1000" to connect Box A to port 1000 on Box B securely. However ... and this is my problem ... I want this port tunnelling connection to be automatic when I boot the machine, e.g. "Presession" and "before" a user logs in.I tried adding to gdm/PreSession/Default: "ssh -f -N -L 1000:HOSTNAME:1000 user@HOSTNAME"But the problem then is because the user is not *logged in* at this stage, it can't use the user's private key to connect to the server, and hence can't automatically create the connection. How do I get Box A to automatically create a tunnel over a port to Box B, without any intervention from me, *prior* to any users logging in?

Ubuntu Servers :: No Traffic Is Being Routed Through The Tunnel?

Aug 9, 2010

I know this has probably been solved multiple times, but I've searched the forum to no avail. I have a PPTP server setup properly with all ports forwarded correctly. A remote machine can connect and authenticate just fine. They get their IP assigned and everything.

The problem is that no traffic is being routed through the tunnel. Or, rather it is but the server doesn't seem to handle it. In a web browser I just get an error message. On a windows client I ran ipconfig and found a gateway address had not been assigned through the VPN tunnel. Could this be the problem? If so, how can I fix it?

Ubuntu Servers :: Tunnel To Remote NFS Server?

Jan 11, 2011

Does anyone know the best and simplest way to do this? I'd like the share to be mounted over the tunnel on boot with as little scripting as possible and be as secure as possible without exposing more than one port to the outside. I will be trying this method: [URL]... once the tunnel is established and 'always on' NFS would take care of the file system mount obviously. Lots of the information I have been reading is not up to date it seems. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Ubuntu Networking :: Route DNS Queries Through Tunnel Too

Jul 6, 2011

I set up a routed OpenVPN server. Everything works fine. But I'd like to route the DNS queries thru the tunnel too. So I added:

[Code]....

Can't find server name for address 10.8.0.1: Non-existent domain Even thou I have a DNS server set up correctly (on the same server as the VPN) with recursion. I verified that by sending queries form external source, which worked fine. I suspect that the Bind server doesn't listen to the tun0-interface only eth0, but the Bind manual says it should listen to all interfaces by default. The server log shows:

Code:
named[9639]: client 10.8.0.10#3807: RFC 1918 response from Internet for 1.0.8.10.in-addr.arpa

How do I get these DNS queries to resolve thru the tunnel?

Ubuntu Networking :: SSH Tunnel / Port Forwarding

Jul 28, 2011

I don't understand the concept of ssh port forwarding and tunneling.I was going to set up a remote desktop (vnc) connection to my grandmother's laptop that we'll give her soon so if something goes wrong i can fix it from here (she lives on the other side of the world). However, i've read using vnc plain over the internet isn't secure, and that i can secure it by running it through an ssh tunnel. That's what i've understood so far. However, from there on i get confused.

I'd have to run both an ssh server AND a vnc server on her laptop? So what i'd have to do is ssh into her computer, and then while logged on on her computer, somehow open a vnc connection back from the remote server to the local computer? Then i'd go back to my local computer and open a port where the vnc connection is waiting? From the concept, it would seem like i should be able to tunnel all the regular network traffic from the local computer to the remote one through ssh?

Networking :: Reverse SSH Tunnel Ubuntu And Windows 7?

Oct 3, 2010

I am currently running 64-bit Windows 7 from my home laptop and I would like to establish an SSH reverse tunnel to my laptop from my work Ubuntu 64-bit machine. I have been reading many "tutorials" that have led me nowhere and I feel as though I'm chasing my tail now. I have done the following on my Ubuntu machine:

Code:
ssh -R 19999:localhost:22 laptop_ip
and on my Windows machine, using putty, did the following:
Code:
Host Name: host_IP

[Code]...

I am able to access my Ubuntu machine when on my work network but there I have been unsuccessful when it comes to trying to remotely access it. I have tried everything that I can think of (though I am a novice). If there is any help/suggestions/ideas that could help, please let me know and don't hesitate to ask for more info!

p.s. I would also like to enable x-forwarding, but for now I would like to have remote access to the Ubuntu machine.

Ubuntu Networking :: PuTTY And VNC Access After Reboot?

Mar 23, 2011

I've seen other posts on this issue, but don't know if they were ever resolved. I've tried some of the suggestions but none seemed to apply.Flavor - 10.10 Issue - Access via VNC after reboot

All in all, I have had nothing but success with Ubuntu, being that I'm no to it, but knowing what I need, I can usually find the solution. My problem is accessing via VNC after a reboot. The issue is the keys (keyring)

Router is setup for SSH on 22 for PuTTY to work, 5900 for VNC to work. If I am at the machine and login, VNC is possible from outside. Should I be running a different server other than the Remote Desktop that is included?

Is there a way to login via SSH to unlock the GUI to allow VNC access? I would not even bother with GUI, but I'm not there yet with the CLI To all that have suggested I learn it, believe me I'm working on it. All of us out there that have the Swindows syndrome have an uphill battle. I can't be the only one up against this. If anyone who has serious skills could take 5 minutes and peek. I can't think of any other information that I could supply. If there is,
