I'm looking for a way to use my PS3 remote as a configurable tool (mouse andor joystick) for my computer. This site doesn't work at all: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sixaxis

I have a gravis gamepad pro, and while Ubuntu recognizes the input device it's treated as another mouse control instead of an actual joystick.
Anyways to fix this? I looked around under system and didn't see anything that would let me maybe fix this.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 amd64, and I'm at a loss on where to go from here.

I just recently did a clean install of 10.10. My controller works fine for games no issues there. I haven't done any sort of configuring in order to make my Logitech cordless rubmble pad 2 controller work as a mouse yet it is. It just started this morning when I booted up. I have found many threads on how to make your controller/joystick work as a mouse. But I have yet to find one on how to get it to quit doing so. Or at least how to toggle it on and off which would be better in my case as Ive found in the past 30 min that I like scrolling with the analog stick much better than pgup/dn or the mouse wheel. The main issue is that I have a 4/yo here that plays games all the time and he keeps opening random things when he plays. I also am looking into how to get virtual box to let windows xp detect my controller but I will post that later after I have done more research if I can't figure it out.

I am using ubuntu 10.04 and have a problem it seems no matter what joystick I plug into ubuntu it wants to treat it like a mouse. I have no idea as to why this is but it is quite annoying. I searched the menu and have yet to find the ability to disable using the joystick as a mouse function.

I ran across a cool program that I would like to try out called x2x, which for those who don't know allows me to use the keyboard and mouse from one computer on another computer. Just google it and you'll find explanations better than that, but you get the gist?
Anyhow, I've installed SSH server and x2x on the computer that I want to control (laptop) and on the computer that I want to use to control the laptop (workstation) I stuffed into a terminal the following:
Code: ssh -XC riley@riley-Eee x2x -east -to :0.0 which, riley@riley-Eee does in fact refer to the laptop that I want to control. All I get back out is: Code: ssh: Could not resolve hostname riley-Eee: Name or service not known even though both systems are on the same router. I would assume that it should work right away no problem, but it doesn't. I don't understand SSH very well (or networking in general) so I'm wondering if someone knows how to step-by-step me through getting it to work.

I just upgraded (via backup and install) from 11.1 to 11.2. SaX2 was perfect for configuring my IBM SpaceSaver (Trackpoint) USB keyboard, and my Logitech Marble Mouse. Now that SaX2 doesn't have the keyboard or mouse, eh... modules?, I don't know how I can configure them the way I'd like.
What now? I'd rather not have to use the on-screen keyboard every time I start up openSUSE to turn off NumLock... Do I have to manually edit /etc/xorg.conf now?

recommend a utility to let me automatically apply shell commands I type to a list of given remote machines?I'm configuring and maintaining multiple servers all running Fedora 12 and I want them to have exactly the same configuration. I also need to check out code from subversion onto these machines; the same code from the same location into the same directory. I know I could use ssh to run each command individually for each machine, but is there a tool that will make this much easier?

I have a couple of problems the upper and lower bars will vanish. And also at times the computer does not respond this is the actions leading up to that. I will move my curor to the system button then down to to preferences and then no responce from any clicking the mouse will move but the computer will not recover from this state.??? I have the following
Nforce3-A MB
amd ath 64 3000
ATI video ?? 128mb
net card (think onboard is dead)
raptor 36 Gb HD
1 Gb ram
sony DVD
Also some other issues: I used the yum update and had to use the yum complete-transaction-function to get it to finish seems all went well after that cant get yum list adobe* to list any thing to install?? And sometimes the computer will start up and after login will go to the nice blue desk top with no icons or bars???
I had a hard time installing this os on my computer as it did not want to use the sata on board. Got a IDE to sata adapter and things went well from there. I also tried to install it on a 4 Gb CF card that was adapted thro the IDE but that was a bust also.

I'm looking for a tool similar to synctoy in linux. For those who dont know what synctoy does is... its a simple syncing application that allows you to copy your data between multiple hard drives and keeps all copies in sync with the latest data. I'm specifically looking for KDE based tool if KDE based is not available then my second preference will be for gtk based app.

So, I have an ubuntu box (no keyboard/mouse), connected to a 1920x1080 TV on my wall which is usually used as a media center. Some times I want to do some maintenance work through the GUI so the obvious thing to do is have some kind of remote administration software like VNC. That is generally very laggy and I don't need a full remote administration because I already have a big TV in front of me, I just need to use my laptop's mouse and keyboard to control the linux box.

Need a good robust configurable DC++ client., because I am getting slow connections with the latest stable and PPA version of Linuxdc++. Yes it may be a unknown config problem, but even with UFW disabled and using "passive" mode, DL's are consistently falling to 500 B/s. Source report that there is no problem at that end.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a laptop with a second monitor configured as a separate x screen.
I configured the workspace switcher applet on the laptop screen to be 2x2 and it changed appropriately. When I go to the preferences for the workspace switcher on the second screen it says it's set to two columns and two rows but still displays as the default four columns and one row and any changes made have no effect.
I changed the setting num_rows from one to two under apps/panel/applets/workspace_switcher_screen1/prefs using gconf-editor and restarted my gnome-panels but it had no effect.
Is there anyway to make the workspace switcher on the second screen display as 2x2?

I hope I am not repeating a thread. I am trying something very simple: To remotely connect from a ubuntu desktop to another ubuntu server (physically not reachable). When I ping the server, it seems to be fine. However, when I try to ssh, the connection is closed by the host. I am the only one using the server. It worked fine a few hours ago and I was trying to copy a lot of data using a couple of scp sessions. At some point the connection was closed and I cannot access the server anymore.

As for what I am trying to do: I am looking for a way to run scripts and/or launch programs from a cell phone using SMS. I've found a few options close to this, but nothing that really fits what I'm trying to do. It seems I can either get speed or ease of use, but not both. To explain:
If I understand correctly, Evolution has this functionality through email, but email isn't instant. I'm trying, as best as I can, to use my phone almost like a remote; sending email from my phone would create a considerable wait time.
Using Pidgin's Buddy Pounce feature with AIM lets me use SMS to get a quick response, but I'm running into the problem that I can't make its action depend on what the message says. I want to be able to text, say, "Shutdown", and have my computer run a shutdown command, but Pidgin's Buddy Pounce feature doesn't seem to support checking for specific messages. I've been unable to find a plugin that changes this; if there was, it'd probably be my best bet.
Bluetooth is out; my computer's bluetooth adapter died a long time ago. Additionally, some of the things I'd like to do would be when I'm not near the computer, so even if it was functional, it would be limiting.
Anything that requires any apps for android, iPhone, or w/e are out too. I have an LG Dare, and while it's a nice phone, you can basically forget custom apps.
So, to recap, I'm trying to find some way of sending an SMS or email from my phone, have it be received as quickly as possible, and have the computer run a console command based on the content of the SMS/email. Any ideas?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.

My home network consists of two computers that share one internet connection via a router. I have a desktop computer that runs Ubuntu (Karmic), connected via ethernet; and a netbook that runs Windows 7 (will be Ubuntu, eventually), which connects wirelessly. Both computers have multiple user accounts. What I would like to do is access my account on the Ubuntu desktop via the netbook while my wife is using the desktop with her account (or enable her to access her account on the desktop while I am using it). I looked into VNC, but it, apparently, only supports the active desktop. So, if someone connected to the computer while it was in use, they would be looking at the other user's desktop. Is this a misconception on my part?
So, I have 3 questions:
-From the netbook, how can I log into my account on the desktop and just get a command-line shell?
- From the netbook, how can I log into my account on the desktop and actually have access to my Gnome desktop?
- If I leave my house with the netbook, and want to log into my desktop machine across the internet (CLI and/or Gnome), how can I do that?

I want to show you this scheme:MyPC -> router -> internet <- router <- Mom'spc I want to connect from my pc to my mom's pc using ssh. The first router doesn't represent a problem, but my mom's router does. Our IPs are both dynamic (anyway, I can easyly know them) and I have opened the port (TCP/UDP) 2100 on the router in order to open a gateway on mom's pc.The firewall is not enabled on the router, nor on mom's pc.
Granted all this, now I should be able to connect to that computer using ssh:ssh user@ip -p 2100 But I can't, I always get a "connection refused".if I do it on my intranet, I can connect without any problem (to others computers, of course, not mom's) What's the reason because I always get a connection refused?

I have a small netbook that I would like to use as a terminal for my main computer, so instead of opening Gnome-terminal on my computer it will run from my netbook.
what i want to know is how to ssh from my netbook into my main computer and run an application on that computer.
So i would like to be able to ssh into my computer, and when i type "vlc movie.avi" it will open and run on the REMOTE computer just as if i had opened gnome-terminal and typed the command there.
Note: I'm not looking for something/anything like "ssh -X" or VNC or Remote Desktop.

I'd like to set up remote desktop which I can access from any computer with a VNC client, without knowing the IP address in advance and without having access to the "server" at the time of access. I'm aware of the security risks, but there's nothing critical on the server computer, and I'll make sure I use a good password, so I'd still like to go ahead. Is this possible?

I forgot to run a GUI process on a remote computer. I need to run the application as if I was at the computer i.e the application needs to open on the desktop on the remote computer.
I can connect to the computer through an ssh tunnel via another computer at the remote site and run non GUI based processes using Screen or bring some GUI programs to the computer I'm working from using the ssh -X option, however, this is not what I'm looking to do.
On Windows I used to use a program from sysinterns called PsExec which would let me start applications such as Word on the remote computer and I'm hoping that there is something similar on Linux.
