Ubuntu :: Remote Controlling Of Keyboard / Mouse?
Apr 7, 2011So, I have an ubuntu box (no keyboard/mouse), connected to a 1920x1080 TV on my wall which is usually used as a media center. Some times I want to do some maintenance work through the GUI so the obvious thing to do is have some kind of remote administration software like VNC. That is generally very laggy and I don't need a full remote administration because I already have a big TV in front of me, I just need to use my laptop's mouse and keyboard to control the linux box.

I tried several options for RDC like -a 16 for 16 bit graphics, but to no avail.What can I do, to have a better Remote Desktop environment? Mar 16, 2010I've bought this remote control that sais it works in Vista, XP etc. without any driver. Basically it has a bunch of buttons that replace the mouse and a bunch of others that replace basic keyboard functions (arrows, enter, escape). It has a USB IR receiver so I thought I could simply use it as a lirc remote in Ubuntu.
However, it sais absolutely nothing on it except for "PCremote" so during lirc installation I have no idea what to choose. And, interestingly, I accidentally discovered that it works in Ubuntu, too, out of the box. Controlling the mouse and acting like a keyboard. Is there a way I can forfeit current functionality and just get it to work as a customizable lirc remote? Or even better, keep current functionality but change it only for certain apps (xbmc, vlc etc)?

Oct 11, 2010I (finally!) have Mythtv working under 10.04. I use the Haupaugge DVB-T card with its remote. Whilst setting up the kit this worked OK. When I unplugged the keyboard and mouse the system prior to installing it next to the TV appeared to have stopped responding to the remote. In fact it seems to be responding to a number of the remote keys but not the OK and Go keys which isn't enough to run Mythtv.
I don't think leaving a keyboard & mouse plugged in is going to be domestically acceptable.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to restore lirc functionality?

Mar 18, 2010I have Karmic on my main PC and the mouse works fine.I have set up Remote Desktop to use a second machine, also with Karmic. Everything works but the mouse is slow to point. For instance if I select a line of text the text is highlighted before the mouse pointer reaches the end. There seems to be a delayed reaction. I have 1Gbit ram on the second m/c.

Aug 30, 2010I'm experiencing random lockups. There are 2 types.1st time this happened when I enabled Kwin compositing effects. The screen turned black and it froze, the mouse pointer froze. Nothing would move. 5 Minutes later I just hard reset the Laptop. I was afraid something could be corrupted as it was shutdown in a bad way. On boot up Kwin's compositing effects were in place.Randomly working on the laptop, everything will freeze except the mouse pointer. This happens like once in a while though.I have a feeling this has something to do with my Dell Studio 1555 Intel GM4500 MHD graphics.

Mar 14, 2010I used easystroke on ubuntu, and it worked well enough to be functional. I triend opening Xstroke in suse, but it just adds an icon down by the notification panel. right click and left click seem to turn it on and off, but i've yet to find any configuration menu of any kind. I've also found the 'input actions' section of the personal settings menu, but i'm having a hard time making heads or tails of it. Basically, what I need is pretty simple. I have a single application that I would like to add more control functionality through the mouse. I don't even necessarily need gesture control, in fact if i could just make my extra mouse buttons perform specific keyboard commands (F11, ctrl++, etc.) that would be fantastic. If I could set it to do different things on different programs.

Oct 5, 2010My mouse and trackpad button control is severely impaired in 11.3, KDE 4.5.1 (or .2) using Compiz. Gnome works fine. XFCE has some problems. The mouse control of window features is sometimes limited to one window with the rest of the desktop not responding to mouse actions. Popping up a second window from an app causes the mouse control to be completely lost. The issue leaves KDE effectively broken having only keyboard control. With some ESC key hits and using right mouse button to close one app (from the panel), I can move focus to another app but mouse control within the app is non-existent. Moving windows or raising or lowering doesn't work either. Sometimes, the GUI captures the mouse click but does not recognize the active App and applies it to objects sitting on the desktop screen underneath.
I've reverted partially back to the 11.3 installation DVD then reload updates and then moved to stable release of 4.5, then went back to the 4.5 factory. All failed to correct the problem. I removed .kde/.kde4 files and this did not help. What is wrong with my system? Also installed the latest kernel of the repos then reverted back to 2.6.34.7-0.3 [x64]. [very frustrating, been using Suse/KDE for >7 yrs, this one has me stumped]

Apr 10, 2011After upgrading from 11.1 to 11.4, USB-Mouse and USB-Keyboard aren't working anymore. Only a PS2-Keyboard works. The (wired) LAN is disabled as well. During Upgrade-Process all these devices were running (e.g.downloading from online-repositories was working).Maybe its the problem, that there are some modules missing:lsmod found only: dm_mod, sg, ohci_hcd, ehci_hcd, ssb, mmc_core, usbcore, pcmcia, pcmcia_core, edd but no usbhid! When I switch the device on, the system boots and Xorg comes up, I can see X cursor on the system. When I start sending mouse move events from the application, the cursor do not move. If I attach mouse to the device and then move the mouse, from this point onwards the mouse events get detected from the simulation application. I have checked the dmesg log as follows

Oct 5, 2010I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my HP Pavilion a320n computer with a ps2 mouse and the mouse pointer points with the bottom of the mouse and not the upper tip of the point. It does the same thing with Ubuntu 10.04.1. In Windows 7 and XP the mouse is normal. I don't know how I could adjust it or is this just a bug in the OS?

Jan 4, 2011I just upgraded to FC14 (64) from FC13 (32) and the mouse middle button (simultaneous left+right button) paste function has stopped working. I tested it with 3 makes/models of different mice and trackballs. For some reason (left+right) mouse returns the same code as the single right-button ('xev' value = 3). This worked in all previous FC and RH distros I've used in the past. Did a default setting get zonked somewhere? System: Toshiba laptop w/ USB mouse.
