Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading Multiple Machines - Avoid Each PC Download The Same Packages?

Nov 14, 2010

I have three Ubuntu desktops that I would like to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. Is there a way to avoid having each PC download the same packages? Is there some magic I can do with two of the PCs to maybe point the software source list at the third 'master' PC that does all the downloading?

Debian Installation :: Updating Three Machines With One Download?

Aug 21, 2011

I have now got three machines with Debian on in my home. I use Mobile Broadband with a very modest monthly limit and remember somehow using Synaptic to gather either Updates or packages to download on one machine where there was another type of internet and could then move the packages back to my computer. Can anyone here remind me of what I would have done there or suggest a means of getting these three updated without blowing my limit. I'd either use a relative's broadband and my netbook, or do the Updates once at home and move the packages to the other two machines.

I'm using Debian 6.01, Gnome edition, 64 bit, on an Atom N450 netbook, a 3ghz dual core AMD pc and a a 2 ghz single core AMD pc, whatever of this is relevant. They have slightly different programs installed but are at the same stage of not being updated yet, with 252mb of them to add.

Fedora Installation :: DRPMs Versus RPMs With Multiple Machines

Mar 10, 2010

I have a home network with 6+ x86_64 machines, all with similar setups. In the past (FC10 and before), I've had common package repositories (e.g /var/cache/yum/fedora/packages) shared via NFS with all the machines (and with keepcache=1 in /etc/yum.conf). That way, a given RPM only got downloaded once; the other machines would then pull it from my local package repository. And I don't mind the disk usage of keeping one copy of all my old RPMS around.

It seems that while DRPMS is great for a single machine, it doesn't make sense in my case. If I have to download the DRPM 6 times (and take the time/CPU hit to recreate the RPM 6 times), I might as well have downloaded the RPM once and been done with it. Is there a not-too-convoluted method to keep a common package repository across multiple machines even with DRPMS? Or, better, to have that first downloading machine pull a DRPM, generate the RPM, then save the RPM in the local shared repository?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading Software Packages ?

Jun 6, 2009

I heen been running Fedora F11 for a while now. I had been over to the RPMFusion website and enabled some repos for this release.

However, when checking for software updates, the latest release of KDE is always stuck at 4.2.2. Is there a way or a repo that I need give me something more up to date?

Is it because F11 is in freeze that there's been no update to KDE? Currently, the latest stable release of KDE is 4.2.4.

Fedora Installation :: Getting Unavailable Packages After Upgrading From 11 To 12 / Why Is So?

Dec 23, 2009

Fedora 11 was being run on a Toshiba Satellite Intel Core2 Duo @ 2.1 with 180 gig hard drive and 3 gigs of RAM. The laptop is encrypted, using Fedora's encryption option when installing 11. Just finished upgrading using the upgrading DVD. Fedora boots and runs fine, when update manager is accessed it says 338 updates available. When updating is attempted there is one unavailable package after another. Have attempted to break the updates down into manageable sections to no avail. There is no repository manager (that can be located). Where to from here?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading Packages In 10.04 - Clean Install On USB Pendrive

Feb 23, 2011

I just performed a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 on my flash drive, allocating a 6.5 GB persistence file. Of course, the first thing I did after booting from it was to run sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade. After a lengthy install process, I was eventually notified that several packages failed to upgrade. I rebooted and tried again, still to no avail. Now, whenever I install a new package or attempt to upgrade with apt-get, I receive the following or a simmilar output:

Code:

Setting up fuse-utils (2.8.1-1.1ubuntu2.2) ...
creating fuse group...
udev active, skipping device node creation.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can Download Packages From Windows

Jan 5, 2010

It's on a desktop that has a dialup modem but no other Internet access (and I haven't even gotten the modem working yet...). So I have it hooked up to a Win2K laptop on the network that is Sharing its (dialup) Internet connection.I can take the laptop to the public library and leech off their wifi to download stuff at much higher speeds. It's not practical for me to take the desktop to the library... Is there a way for me to use the Windows laptop (at the library) to download the packages Update Manager tries to get for Ubuntu, bring it home, transfer them to the Ubuntu desktop, and have Update Manager just install 'em from there?

Ubuntu Installation :: Apt Authentication - 15 Packages Still To Download

Jun 17, 2010

The other night I tried to upgrade my system to Karmic Koala. The machine took forever to download the packages and when it was almost completed, the installation phase in the Update Manager suspended. Both keyboard and mouse weren't responsive so I was forced to shut the system down manually. Now when I boot up, it loads the desktop, a dialogue box pops up stating there's an Apt Authentication issue. When I click "Run this action now" it opens a window showing it is about to download 15 packages.

But unfortunately before it can load, the system hangs. If I reboot, close the dialogue box and try to use the Update Manager as a means to correct the problem, the same thing happens. In addition to trying to find a solution, I'm keen to avoid doing a full, clean install, as I don't want to lose the system configs and data (I've got 200gb in music files and use the system as a music server). I've also tried to load in "recovery mode" but it doesn't load properly.

Ubuntu :: Syncing Need To Set Up Multiple Machines?

May 4, 2010

I just installed ubuntu 10.04 x64. I have installed it and set it up the way I like on my server, however I now have 3 terminals and a laptop to set it up on the exact same way. As a result Id like some advice on what can and cant be done and how. Preferably I am looking to use programs with GUIs. Thing the style of ubuntu one, software manager etc, not really too into the command line, or conf editing unless there is no other option.

1. I installed all the software from software centre I like. Now I need the same software on the other computers. I know mint has mintbackup where it just exports and imports a list if installed software. I am looking for an ubuntu equivalent.

2. Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons. I install like 20 firefox and thunderbird add ons. sometimes I can't even keep track of them. There must be a way to sync them so that each computer I install ubuntu on I can simply import the list of mozilla add ons and have it auto download them.

3. Mail Contacts and Calender Syncing. I need to sync between my 3 ubuntu machines and my windows mobile 6.5 device for calender, email/phone/name contact lists. Email is taken care of by imap, but lightnings calender isnt and neither are the contacts. If I input a contact on my phone I want it to sync to the other computers I use.

4. Ubuntu one. I have /storage/workfolder in my root directory on my personal server. I want to be able to work on documents at work on my laptop and sync them so that when I get home, they are synced on the server without causing overwrite changes etc.

5. Desktop settings, icon themes, preferences from ubuntu tweak etc. I know this one is a bit more of a long shot, but it takes 20 minutes each computer, to set up the little maximize minimize buttons on the other side, set up cairo dock the way I like, install the icon theme and backgrounds I like. isnt there a way to back this up so it doesnt have to be done each time or so I can make my other computers the same?

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting After Upgrading To Ubuntu 11.04 And Updating Packages?

Jul 11, 2011

Booted my laptop up for the first time in a while and ran

Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade to get updates for my packages. After installing I needed a reboot since I was on kernel 2.6.35-28. Post-reboot, I get stuck on a black screen with random artifacts after the purple screen after Grub, regardless of kernel (back to 2.6.35-22 is the oldest I have) with exception to the recovery mode options. Pressing the power button will shutdown the system in what seems to be the usual manner. The screen changes to the purple with ubuntu in the middle and the dot loading bar and shuts down.

I booted into recovery mode and opted to repair packages and rebooted but to no avail. I can get into a terminal by editing the boot options in Grub swapping out " quiet splash vt.handoff=7 " with "--verbose". Currently have a terminal on kernel 2.6.38-10 Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit. Win 7 partition also boots fine. This feels like a driver issue, but I'm not sure. Boot log (/var/log/boot.log) looks fine except for these lines:

Code:
fsck: fsck.ntfs: not found
fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.ntfs for /dev/sda2 /dev/sda3: clean, 262541/8560640 files, 2310841/36228480 blocks
init: ureadahead-other main process (723) terminated with status 4

The first 2 shouldn't be affecting my Ubuntu boot in this manner (other than failing to automatically mount my NTFS partition, which is a different problem), however the last one worries me. Doing some research on the termination status 4 of ureadahead-other I came across this page here, but am wary to just go around willy-nilly deleting things I don't know much about. It wouldn't be a great loss to simply blow the disk away and restart, but I'd rather salvage what's there if I can..
