View 8 Repliesi upgraded my sisters laptop from 10.04LTS to 10.10. I updated everything, prior to starting the upgrade.Everything upgraded fine, however some applications simply wont launch. For instance, if i launch Ubuntu Tweak from the main menu through Applications>System Tools> Ubuntu Tweak, i get the ubuntu tweak splash, but then nothing after that.If i type "ubuntu-tweak" in terminal i get:Quote:
user@user-ubuntu:~$ ubuntu-tweak
/usr/bin/ubuntu-tweak:97: Warning: g_object_get_qdata: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

Recently I updated my Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.10, by performing a clean install and not-formatting my home partition (set it as home mount point for the 8.10).At first I didn't realize any changes in the desktop environment, my compiz setting still doing fine (except for the background set for each desktop). And then I wanted to set the image, but to found out that there is no more shortcut to my compiz setting (through the System > Preferences menu).I checked the Appearance menu, and since I clicked on one of the options available, my compiz feature is no more to be available. The desktop is set to default 8.10 feature.I checked my other pre-installed application; such as Amarok, Thunderbird, etc. They all are gone.My question is, how can I get them back? This question is important, because from now on I'm going to perform the sequential upgrade (8.10 > 9.04 > 9.10), if I'm going to loose those application on every upgrade phase, then I'd just upgrade first before solving my problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThere's a proprietary application that I need that is packaged within a Ubuntu 9.04 live ISO, so I'd like to upgrade the whole thing, including the kernel + libraries to benefit from its extra hardware support, add some missing applications and device drivers, and generate a new ISO ready to be burned on a USB/CD.
What issues should I expect? Are Linux applications/libraries downward-compatible, so that the proprietary application is likely to still work, even though I upgraded the kernel and libraries?
Some of the programs that I can install from the repos are outdated. Particularly, Amarok. In the repos 2.3.0 is available and I need 2.3.1 to fix a bug that's occurring on my system. How do accomplish this without having duplicates on the system along with any such error that might complicate the functioning of Amarok.

This is a real newb's question. I can't get to my files on a NAS once I'm in an application.ExampleI have a text/graphic file to open from the NAS. I can see it in Nautilus, and can double-click there to open in OpenOffice/Gedit/Gimp. Once I'm working I want to open another file so in my application I go File > OpenFrom there I can't see the NAS. (Interestingly I can see a locally-connected USB hdd).Do I really have to go through Nautilus every time I want to open something from the NAS?

Will this delete programs (from the software centre) and files (from the my documents anf my pictures folders)?
I just installed grub2 on my laptop and everything works fine and boots right. It gave my the option to run
'sudo rm -f /boot/grub/menu.lst*' after the installation because it said it could not determine itself if these files were necessary to keep.
I'm not sure what files they are exactly, or how to find them either, but do people usually delete them after upgrading?
Recently I did a wget for DreamLinux 4beta6.3, which I now cannot burn to a disk. Another issue with linux in general being just a hobby. Why could a dev not set it up where you could just wget the upgrades for the main distro files themselves ?? We already do this when upgrading the apps, so why not the distro? Why could you not start at alpha, and just slap do a rolling upgrade into rc and beyond?
I understand the potential stability issues, but why can't we ghost the drive and hence have a backup on hand and then do this as outlined, and hence do a single install from alpha the distro's grave? I am wasting four months on "Setting Up" each install, only to wind up reinstalling again. This happens in every variation I have come across. Even in stable versions, the rolling upgrade just craps the install, and the major do overs hijacks all my data.
We are currently running Redhat 5.4 64Bit (Build 2.6.18-164.e15) however having issues with tar files that are greater than 2TB in size.
We have been told that upgrading the kernel to support the ext4 file system (supported in version 5.5?) and mounting the current 10TB nas share as an ext 4 file system may solve our over 2TB file size issues. Are their limitations within the ext3 file system that cause issues to files greater than 2TB and if this is the case Do we have to update the kernel (complete rebuild), or can we load a package on the redhat box to support the ext 4 file system Where do we get the upgrade/package. I have logged onto the redhat site and can not find kernel updates but can find the full installation packages. We are not connected directly to the internet and do not have access to the update repository
I have installed Lucid 10.04 server on an IBM eserver 325 dual boot with 2003. the cd rom drive on the server is starting to go out and the install worked but failed to install key applications and files. For examle- no VIM (just VI) and the apt sources.list file had one entry- the cd rom. I need to update all the packages necessary for the system to operate fully. ( I have tons of broken dependencies when trying to install SSHserver, Samba and other apps) I manually entered the muliverse and universe repositories in sources.list but this is not resolving the issues with the missing dependencies. I can get a new cd-rom drive but it will certainly take a week or two to get and I need to get this project going. I have some experience with Linux, but not enough to know if there is a magic command that I don't know.
View 2 Replies View RelatedRunning various applications, including Open Office, I need to open files from my external hard drive, from within said application itself. But the file menus for all my applications list only the files of my primary hard drive, and I can't look at other drives. Surely there must be some way to do this.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering if you can share some tips in regards to finding .conf files in programs when installing using package managers. I'm scratching my head on the fact that when you install a program through yum/apt-get, I don't know what and where the software is being installed at. In Windows, I know that when it installs an application, it goes into the Program Files directory, it's that simple.I know Linux has predefined directories for applications but sometimes it installs configuration files in /etc or some other locations in /usr which I have a tough time sifting through.
Is there a way to trace what .conf or any files for that matter which relates to what software that needs it? It's just hard for me to understand what file relates to what application at the moment. As much as I would like to learn more about Linux, this process for me takes up alot of time. I hope you can help me out on this one.
When I remove an application from YaST does it remove its config files too? If it does not, is there any command by which I can remove the config files for all the uninstalled applications?

View 2 Replies View Relatedlately I'm experiencing a few issues with Firefox 5.0 on my Ubuntu 11.04 installation. First of all, when I try to open pdf files, I often get a black page and I've to try to reload it many times before I can effectively read the pdf (even for small-size ones).
Secondly Firefox doesn't record settings about my preferred applications. If, for example, I want a file .torrent to be opened by deluge I have to enter manually /usr/bin/deluge because by default it would be opened by gedit. No matter if I select "use as default application" the next time the issue will be present again.
