Applications :: Consequences Of Upgrading Distribution?
Aug 23, 2010
There's a proprietary application that I need that is packaged within a Ubuntu 9.04 live ISO, so I'd like to upgrade the whole thing, including the kernel + libraries to benefit from its extra hardware support, add some missing applications and device drivers, and generate a new ISO ready to be burned on a USB/CD.
What issues should I expect? Are Linux applications/libraries downward-compatible, so that the proprietary application is likely to still work, even though I upgraded the kernel and libraries?

i upgraded my sisters laptop from 10.04LTS to 10.10. I updated everything, prior to starting the upgrade.Everything upgraded fine, however some applications simply wont launch. For instance, if i launch Ubuntu Tweak from the main menu through Applications>System Tools> Ubuntu Tweak, i get the ubuntu tweak splash, but then nothing after that.If i type "ubuntu-tweak" in terminal i get:Quote:
user@user-ubuntu:~$ ubuntu-tweak
/usr/bin/ubuntu-tweak:97: Warning: g_object_get_qdata: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

Recently I updated my Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.10, by performing a clean install and not-formatting my home partition (set it as home mount point for the 8.10).At first I didn't realize any changes in the desktop environment, my compiz setting still doing fine (except for the background set for each desktop). And then I wanted to set the image, but to found out that there is no more shortcut to my compiz setting (through the System > Preferences menu).I checked the Appearance menu, and since I clicked on one of the options available, my compiz feature is no more to be available. The desktop is set to default 8.10 feature.I checked my other pre-installed application; such as Amarok, Thunderbird, etc. They all are gone.My question is, how can I get them back? This question is important, because from now on I'm going to perform the sequential upgrade (8.10 > 9.04 > 9.10), if I'm going to loose those application on every upgrade phase, then I'd just upgrade first before solving my problem.

In the 11.4 product highlights it says: "...availability of PulseAudio in a Plasma Desktop session by default", but what does this mean to the average KDE user? The SUSE-Wiki has no entry for pulse nor pulseaudio.
While basic sound works fine out of the box for me, I am confused between Phonon, KMix and PulseAudio. Each does something else:KMix is now entirely useless, right? Phonon only allows me to select which sound device is used for which input. PulseAudio allows me to select indivdual volume per Application through pavucontrol, but it does not replace phonon nor Kmix There is no KDE Plasmoid/Systray thingy for configuring volume with PulseAudio? Is there no single application/plasmoid to handle all sound options in one go?
I think it is pretty bad that pavucontrol is not even installed for KDE-users by default, and it took me a while to figure it out. Or is there another application that a KDE-user should rather use by default?
I mean things work fine, such as using Phonon to automatically choose my Bluetooth headset for voice communication while music and games at the same time automatically use the speakers for output. Changing volume with pavucontrol works, but why do I need separate things for that?
This is not meant as a rant! I am just wondering whether the PulseAudio/KDE-Integration is just work-in-progress, or whether I am missing something important here entirely. After all, 11.4 and KDE 4.6 looks pretty polished to me overall, and so the audio situation sticks out as odd to me.

I'm trying to delete files that are useless and large since I'm running out of diskspace. Some of the files are (I think) Vi session files that are stored in /var/tmp dir, they are named elvis1.ses, elvis2.ses, etc.

I would like to install a program (R for statistical computing). I am using Slackware. On the download page of R (The Comprehensive R Archive Network) there are options to download the code for Debian, Redhat, Suse, and Ubuntu. Which one should I download in my case (using Slackware)? Is there any of them which I should not download?

I have an Ubuntu server running in our small office. Among its many duties is report generation. It uses PHP and DOMPDF (a PHP library for converting HTML/CSS to PDFs for printing). PHP's default memory limit of 32MB is not even close to being enough to pull large amounts of data from the database and generate images/tables/PDFs with that data.
I increased the memory limit to 64MB and that is adequate for reports under 3 pages or so (varies based on table complexity, images, etc). If any user tries to generate a report longer than that, PHP just throws a "out of memory" error and doesn't make the report.
My question is: what are the possible consequences of increasing the memory limit yet again to 128MB or maybe even higher? The server isn't terribly powerful. It has 2GB RAM and 4GB swap space. I know that isn't much but this is a small office and at most I can only see two or three people trying to run reports at the same time. As for security, apache is currently only serving pages in the local network, but sometime within the next year I'll probably have it hosting a public website (currently using a hosting service). Is a high memory limit a potential security risk when exposed to the internet?
EDIT: Sorry, PHP's default memory limit is 16 not 32 as I said. Question still stands, however

I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

I was wondering if there was any way to remove icons from the installed applications menu?I recently attempted to install GOG.com's Zork Anthology using Wine and when I de-installed, the icons for those files were still listed in installed applications. Is there anyway to delete them manually?

I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

Is there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.
Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.
Is there a way to do this in C/C++.
I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.

What does "distribution" mean? My Acer computer, on which I have linux linpus lite, comes with very little documentation and while I have a physics BA and have had exposure to technology, my knowledge of linux is just about zip. Is there a good place to start? As you can see, this question about the word "distribution" is a razor thin top of an enormous iceberg of ignorance.

Obviously I have openoffice installed under linux, but the wine app cannot see it. How can I make the wine app see across the emulation layer into linux to see the app it needs? Dont tell me I need to install openoffice under wine as well to get it to work!

My company has over 230 servers in the field (running Windoze Server 2003 with cygwin). I frequently write small admin utilities (in Bash or Java) and need to deploy them (new and updates) to all of the servers over ssh. I run Ubuntu (9.10) on my laptop (don't ask about the Windoze servers -- it was NOT my decision).

I just bought a computer from a company that was having a fire sale. Anyway I figured that I'd give Ubuntu another shot. I installed 10.10 yesterday without any real idea of what was in the box.Is this the right distro for this box? I'm not sure if the distro is 64 bit. There's an AMD64 version, but is that only for AMD chips? How do I tell if I'm running a 64 bit or 32 bit distro?

I have an old copy of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 in a virtual machine that I haven't used in a long time. I want to update the distribution to the latest but I'm not seeing an option to do so under the upgrade manager or the synaptic package manager. When I attempt to refresh my package information I get an error message talking about how the repository is no longer valid. I've even tried to open the terminal and type: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and it doesn't do anything.

I need a 64-bit Linux distribution to beta test TeraChem, a GPU-based quantum chemistry package. I have never personally used Linux, however, and I don't know anything about the available distributions. I was wondering if I could get some recommendations.
My system specifications:
CPU: Xeon W3520
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 275
Motherboard: GIGABYTE EX-58 UD5
Current OS: Windows 7 64-bit
I would not use Linux as my sole OS but would want to dual-partition (I think that is the term?). However, I think I would end up using the distribution for more than just running TeraChem. I may even become a convert!
What am I looking for in a distribution? Ease of use, efficiency, 64-bit. What do I know how to do? I can build computers, code in C++, comfortably use a command line.

I've been using and relying on linux for some time. I have even tried distributions like Arch. I was wondering what would be a good book for learning the inner workings of linux, how to write shell scripts, compile my own kernel, how to build my own distribution, things like that. I also would like to know if there is a good book for linux networking works. I want to be able to modify distributions specifically for my hardware, and have a better home net work set up.

I've used Ubuntu for about a year now and I really want to move on to a distribution that involves more hands-on customization and more cutting-edge packages (with a wide availability). I'm mainly looking at Debian Testing, openSUSE, and Fedora, but I'm open to any other suggestions. I know Debian has a huge repository of packages, and I was also wondering if there were any good third-party repositories to get significantly more packages in Fedora or openSUSE.
