Ubuntu :: Unused Program In The System Monitor?

Feb 11, 2011

I wondering does the evolution-alarm-notify and evolution-data-server-1.4 would remove from the system monitor or just leave them alone. I didn't want to touch them that would cause system diseaster, can you please confirm for both if say yes to remove that will be good safe.. I am running older version of Ubuntu 5.10 on my lappy.

My firefox browser takes too much memory that runs very slowest and I need to cut down the both program list above or what I need to remove some other program in the system monitor.

OpenSUSE :: Created A Tab To Look That The Physical Memory In The System? Monitor Program?

May 11, 2010

I have a system with 1 GB RAM. I'm running KDE 4. I created a tab to look that the Physical Memory in the System Monitor program, which I assume appears to look at the same stats that "top" looks at. In that Physical Memory tab I have 3 tables: Used Memory, Free Memory, and Application Memory.The Used Memory table shows that the system is using .94 of .98 GiBytes. The Free Memory table shows that the system has .5 GiBytes of RAM free.

However the Application Memory shows that only 339 M-Bytes of RAM is being used.Note that "top" shows the same info.So where is the other .6 GiBytes of RAM that the Used Memory table shows as being used?If I look at the process table which is supposed to encompass all of the processes running, including the ones for the OS, then it appears to add up to the 339 M-Bytes being used in the Application Memory table. Is the rest of the memory being held in reserve by the OS to be used as needed? If so, then why when another application is opened the Free Memory goes down instead of staying constant?I also noticed this memory "black hole" when I was running 11.0 on a system with 4 GB of RAM. The OS appeared to "take up" a large chunk of memory that was NOT being used by any applications and making it "disappear" - meaning that the applications were using about 1.3 GiBytes of RAM and Free Memory was showing only .7 GiBytes instead of the over 2 GB of RAM that should be free.

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Janitor Lists As "unused" A Program?

Apr 1, 2010

I ran the Computer Janitor to clean things up a bit, and found that the list of "unused" items is pretty long, ~141.Among the items listed, I found Maxima, Pari-GP and Gnuplot, which are used by Sage, which I use all the time.Is this possibly a mistake? I'm currently using a binary form of Sage, rather than the one available via apt, so maybe these aren't currently being used?Also listed were cpython, ipython and a lot of python-*; does that seem right?

Basically, I'd like something that will log the non-read activities of a given directory or directories.

Ubuntu :: Incorrect File System Space Reported By System Monitor?

Apr 3, 2011

In System Monitor, on the File Systems tab, the "Total", "Available" and "Used" columns don't seem to add up, and the "Used" percentage doesn't seem correct either.

My config:
/dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition.
/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.

Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).

However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB
"Available" = 125.4 GiB
"Used" = 263.5 GiB

Ubuntu :: GUI Program To Calibrate A Monitor With Instructions?

May 18, 2011

I have looked around and seen Xgamma, Argyll, and display calibrator. These programs do not work, mainly the display calibrator gui. I see Nvidia xserver has a color correction function, and that looks good. However, how do you use it? I can tweak colors but they end up looking incorrect still.

I am looking for a detailed step by step tutorial about how to calibrate a monitor, which are aimed at newbies who don't have much prior knowledge. On the mac it was incredibly simple; anything like this on Ubuntu?

Ubuntu :: Start Program (that Lacks --display Flag) On Second Monitor?

Oct 12, 2010

I was thinking to do my music producing completely on linux and found a plethora of good tools for it. The thing is I have two monitors and instead of launching manually every little app each time I feel creative, I want to make a script that launches all my favorite apps.

So long I have written this little bash script:

Code:

#!/bin/bash
#Start my audio programs for music production
(qjackctl --start)&
(hydrogen --nosplash)&
sleep 1
ardour2

So what it does is that it starts the jack server, then hydrogen and lastly ardour2. The thing is that I want hydrogen to start in the second monitor but don't know how. I have devilspie but I didn't have any luck on finding some command to choose display. I am aware of the --display flag that some programs have like firefox but hydrogen doesn't have it. Btw I use a different X server on each screen. is there a universal way to launch ANY kind of program on a specific display?

Something with a gui would be nice, but I am not sure Linux has such a program, like Windows does. Ubuntu :: 10.10 - CPU Usage In System Monitor

Jan 6, 2011

I am having a slight issue with my netbook (toshiba nb305) Just fully switched to Ubuntu 10.10 from Windows 7 starter so still a little new. I first installed the 32 bit version and everything was all sorts of peachy. But while reading some documentation on my model I ran across a cryptic line that hinted at my cpu being 64 bit. Did a little research on these forums and ran a command in terminal (honestly cant remember it) that listed the specs on my hardware. Sure enough my "width" was listed as 64 bit.

Well just to give it a shot I Downloaded the 64 bit version of 10.10 and Installed it on another partition. Up and running checked over everything. Appears to be normal. But on a whim I went into the System Monitor and noticed not one cpu but 2? Confirmed same situation on 32 bit.
Processor 0: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N455 @ 1.66 GHz
Processor 1: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N455 @ 1.66 GHz

Ok I was a tad bit confused so I was about to do a lil research on it. But then I noticed on the Resources tab that under 64 bit my CPU History graph showed both processors Pegged at 100% With nothing running except for the basics. Under the 32 bit it was reliantly low? I checked the Processes tab in both to confirm there wasnt a unusual process out there jamming up cpu usage but the highest cup listed was the gnome-system-monitor at like 40 est %. Nothing showing up using the CPU that vigorously.

Ubuntu :: Get Rid Of Unused Packages?

I have Ubuntu Meerkat (10.10) running on an Inspiron E1505. I have it setup for dual boot with Vista. I installed Kubuntu on top of Ubuntu and now have a blue Kubuntu system loading screen where it used to be purple.

I've installed a lot of programs, most unnecessarily, so I'd now like to get rid of ALL of the unnecessary programs and associated packages or dependencies. I'd also like to get rid of KDE, and any Ubuntu packages I never use.

Is there a quick and relatively easy way to do this?

Ubuntu :: Dual Monitor - Now System Won't Start Up

Feb 9, 2010

I think I have caused a big problem with my laptop running Ubuntu 9.04, and I now can't get it to load up properly at all. It was when I was trying to change the screen resolution of my external monitor.

I'll try to recall exactly what I did...

I connected the external monitor and then turned the laptop on. The laptop worked fine, and the external monitor worked fine. The only problem was that the resolution on the external monitor was poor (it was the same resolution as on the laptop screen).

I went to system>preferences>Display

I removed the tick from mirror screens

Then I selected the external monitor and changed its resolution to the maximum setting. At this point a message popped up, but now I can't remember exactly what it said - I just clicked OK.

Both screens went all black, and I couldn't undo whatever I'd done.

I've now tried switching the computer off again and on again. If the external monitor is NOT connected when I switch the computer on then the laptop doesn't load up - I get the little Ubuntu symbol to start with, but then the screen just goes black.

If the external monitor IS connected then it takes me to the screen where I get to choose which OS to boot. If I boot normally then I see the ubuntu symbol and then it goes black. If I choose recovery mode then it does some recovery and then it takes me to a command line. So I can see all of my files.

Sometimes it does something different when I switch it on and an error message appears on the laptop screen. But the screen is so fuzzy that I can't see what it says. I click on OK (I guess it says OK...) and it takes me to another error message - but I can't seem to get any further.

So that's the problem. If anyone can help me I will be very grateful. I'm actually not that intested in getting the external monitor to work - it's much more important that I undo whatever change I've made so that the laptop works properly again.

I think the important thing is that I can get to the command line, so I should be able to make any necessary change there.
