Ubuntu :: Unity Works On Optiplex 780 Dual Monitor?
Jun 30, 2011
The title says most of it. I've got an Optiplex 755 (Dual 20" Dell Monitors) on my desk at work but have access to a 780 if I want it. The 755 does NOT work with Unity, simply won't handle it. I'm not interested in doing an OS Reinstall and data transfer of all my work stuff if Unity doesn't work (KDE is fine on my 755...well sort of, I have Konsole windows popping up through my Firefox and KRDC windows but that's a somewhat minor issue). Anyone have an Optiplex 780 that they have the most recent Ubuntu installed with Unity running (Dual Screen) without a problem?

I have an NVIDIA 9800 GTX. I have 2 DELL monitors connect to this card, one is a 24" and the other is 21".
I am unable to use Xinerama mode with Unity, because for some reason after logging in, I get no desktop interface, only background wallpaper, and I have to force reboot.
How can I setup dual monitors in Ubuntu using Unity properly? Note that I do NOT want to use TwinView, since this results in dead space around the smaller monitor.

I've been using my laptop with an external LCD monitor attached to it at work (Philips 201E). And at home with a different external monitor (Samsung 2032BW). I have an ATI graphics card (HD3450), with Ati Catalyst drivers enabled and I'm using the Single display desktop (Multi-Desktop) seeting. At work I have the external monitor on the left and laptop on the right, while at home the other way around. So when I switch between the two setups, I just needed to go to Ati Catalyst Control Center, change the order of the displays, change the resolution (Home - 1680x1050, Work - 1440x900), reboot and it was all fine.
But since a while it doesn't work properly anymore:
At home it *still* works fine. At work it doesn't work. Sometimes it works for some reason, after a few resolution/setting changes in ACCC and reboots... it's very strange and annoying. Does anyone have any idea for fixing it? I've uninstalled and reinstalled the ATI restricted drivers and that seemed to make it work initially, but it still works just sometimes. This is my xorg.conf currently:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "amdcccle Layout"
Screen 0 "amdcccle-Screen[6]-0" 0 0
Screen "amdcccle-Screen[6]-1" 1280 0
EndSection

My dual monitor no longer works. I downloaded the new patch for my video card and apparently the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 and Linux do not like each other?
1)Should I just remove the driver?
2)If I did would the old driver pick up because although it had a few faults, at least I could use both monitors after a lil engineering
3)If I were to remove the driver, where would I do it from?

I have a dual monitor setup in Ubuntu, with my main monitor on the right and the monitor I want to extend to on the left monitor, but I can't seem to get it to do this, it always has the 'desktop' on the left monitor and then extends onto what I want to be my main monitor. I have an ATI Radeon 4350 Graphics card.

Is there any way to put a dual monitor wallpaper on a single monitor configuration using desktop wall? Using only 1/3 or so per wall. Something that will have the effect like the scrolling wallpaper feature on Android/iPhone.

This is a repost of my initial problem, I need some one who knows what they are doing more than I too take a look at this command output and give some sort of direction/clue/etc on what I'm doing wrong or missing.
Is my xorg.conf missing some vital line(s) or setting?
My best guess is that i'm missing something to tell the Xserver to use both screens, as the Xorg.0.log does not talk about trying to bring up the intel display; but this is just a hunch.
I'm running kubuntu 9.04 with 2 monitors: on-board intel video and a PCI nvidia display: I am using my nvidia display fine, but still can not get my 2nd display (the intel) working. What the heck am I missing?

just setup suse 11.3 , put on the Nvidia 19.29-22.1 drivers via yast , no kms is set in inetd , nomodeset on grub boot line etc... Even tried installing the driver " the hard way " dual monitors come up, setup xinerama to "Extend" my desktop , and the main monitor ( right side ) is good, visually the left monitor (2ndary) is good.. but whenever I move my mouse over to the left screen the mouse pointer dissapears, flickers along the right hand border of that screen... and if i move the cursor back to the original screen i have to really fight to get it back to the main screen....Copy of my xorg.conf , still very basic...

I just upgrade to F14 from F10 on a dual montor setup. Firefox behaives differently on F14 than on F10.
On F10 it followed the mouse pointer's location and show up on the correct monitor
When maximized at close, it is always displayed on the left monitor. When not maximized at close it will open on the monitor where the mouse pointer is located.
About minimize/maximize Firefoxe before closing and it seems to work in some case, but not for me.

I have to report that I am unhappy with the idea of taking away Gnome. I use a tablet, thus I use CellWriter. CellWriter works fine on 11.04 in Gnome but not in Unity. Additionally, CellWriter uses a system tray icon, which doesn't exist in Unity. I don't like my destop experience in Unity. It doesn't agree with the way I interact with my computer. We have Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu. I would like to request that we fork a Unity distro and keep a Gnome desktop for users to choose.

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and all was working ok till today. I am not sure if it was because of a new update(manager)or maybe another reason, but i get a purple screen and a unresponsive window from a alarm clock app and thats it. This occures when I login onto Classic Ubuntu and Safe mode, the main Ubuntu (Unity) is working fine.
I did use Ubuntu Classic since install and was running fine. Now the screen is purple and cant even shut of the PC with the powerbutton. I can still get into terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1 and that about it... I had Dock installed, task bar... all is gone, even the background picture changed.

When I first started using Unity, I configured the dual monitor system under the settings program. I then changed my xorg.conf, but Unity is ignoring that configuration and switching to its own. I think this might have something to do with RandR, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to make Unity use the xorg.conf configuration?

I am attempting to use dual monitors in Fedora 14 using an AMD ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series graphics card (not that I think that has anything to do with anything, but who knows), and want it to where my second monitor is its own virtual workspace so that I can switch between my other workspaces on my original monitor without switching the workspace on the second monitor. This way, I can watch movies or what-not on my TV (2nd monitor) while working on my original monitor. The only thing I found that was even close was setting the 2nd monitor up on it's on x server, which I don't want to do. Also, as it is now, I have my panel on my original monitor, but the windows do not see it when I have it aligned on the right (the windows don't adjust their size to account for the fact that it is there). I know a way I can do a work-around for this, but I would like to know if there is a "correct" way to do this. I know I can tell the movie player to show on all workspaces and have it on the 2nd monitor.

So the first couple of days using Unity with my dual monitors went fine. Today I plugged in my laptop to the second monitor, and while the top bar and the side menu are being displayed, all the desktop icons, background, and actual program windows are black. Basically I just have the menu bar and the launcher. The windows are still there when I unplug the second monitor.

Natty install -- ATI 9800 is the video board.
I installed Natty on it with the machine hooked up to a Samsung LCD with a 1680x1050 resolution over DVI. No problems at all. I want the box to pretty much output MP3s and web video, so I'm not needing much. When I take the box and hook it via DVI to my LCD, I get a blank screen on boot up. I try sticking the natty CD in it, and I get a blank screen trying to live boot it too. The LCD doesn't do 1680x1050, so I brought it back to my Samsung and set the default resolution to something nice and safe: 1280x1024. Still the same behavior. When I take splash mode off, I see a "load fallback graphics devices fail" error as it is booting up. Hard for me to think the driver is the fault here when it works on my over LCD just fine.

I have this very frustrating problem... I'm trying to build a Linux-based HTPC (Home Theatre PC). I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty as the operating system, and it works fine when I have it connected to my 17" Samsung monitor. However, when I connect the HTPC to the TV via VGA I get a black screen after "startx" (I can access the console through recovery mode though). Ubuntu is running gnome, so I guess it's a gnome related problem?
I would have thought it was a problem with the drivers to graphics card, but since it's working on my 17" monitor I've ruled that out. The TVs resolution is 1024x768. What can be causing this? Apperently there's some difference between my monitor and my TV (forgetting the fact that it is indeed a TV, not a monitor), but what? I've previously run Windows on the same hardware without problems, and thought I should give Linux a shot. It doesn't look good...

I've got the iMO mostly working, but there are a few gaps that keep it from being actually useful.First, the stuff that works: Gave up trying for one display with two screens, and instead went with 2 displays. Started the USB display with:
Code:
xinit /usr/bin/fluxbox -geometry 800x480+0+40 -display :1.0 -- /usr/bin/X :1 -novtswitch -sharevts -layout USBScreen -dpi 75 >/tmp/dl1.log &
sleep 10
x2x -east -to :1 &
The "-layout" option references a ServerLayout in xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
[Code]...
Move you finger from left-to-right, the cursor moves from right-to-left. Tried "InvX", "InvertX", "SwapX", but so far it looks like evtouch is ignoring all options. Xinput list-props only shows "enabled" as a property. Actually, even if this worked, the touch pad would still be a problem. Right now the touch pad input goes to the currently active screen. Ideally I'd like the touch pad to generate x-values to the right of the main screen so that it controls the USB screen, not the main screen. Might be an option that controls this, except evtouch ignores all options.
Suspend kills the USB bus If the PC goes into suspend while the USB display is active, when it returns all USB devices are dead; USB monitor, mouse, keyboard. Hard reset to clear. Also, if the USB display is idle long enough, it turns off the display. Moving the mouse over to that display then causes a USB failure and a hard reset. Might be cool to use it as an out-board screen, but not if the application menus don't work, the touch pad is backwards, and it locks up the system...

My promlem is that i wrote a few simple script to monitor the network connection as follows:
script 1 "netmonitor.sh"
Quote:
#!/bin/bash
# /usr/local/bin/netmonitor.sh
ping -c 1 "$HOST" > /dev/null 2>&1
if [ $? = 0 ]; then
echo "`date` Network is ready!" |
[Code]...
Is it possible, that if system don't use the connection after getting the DHCP lease, it close the connection automaticly? Anyway it works ok, but i don't want to owerwrite my router's flash in every 5 seconds with te new lease, my script probably defeat it soon if i don't do anything

I have to hold a presentation using a projector in a few days and I have to bring my own laptop, so I tried hooking up a second monitor to test if it works. As it turns out, the second monitor works fine, but then my main screen is messed up. I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 and I'm doing this on a HP Pavilion DV4000 laptop. My main screen shows just the bottom (cca) 400 pixels of the wallpaper, no bottom panel, no desktop icons. And I'm kind of scared to remove the second monitor now cause I don't know what I'll do if I don't get the main screen back.. Well, other than installing 9.10 beta that is..

I've been looking and trying various programs to replace my beloved Wallpaper-Tray on my new Ubuntu 10.04 setup. The problem is, nothing seems to be able to work with my dual monitors like wallpaper-tray did.
Drapes, Wally, Nitrogen, and Wallpapoz are all pretty worthless when it comes to dual monitors. I am looking for something that will stretch my dual-screen wallpaper across both screens like wallpaper-tray did. Drapes comes close by centering a wallpaper in the middle of both screens - but if it can't stretch it across both screens then that's a deal-breaker for me. Not all my dual screen wallpapers are 3840x1200. Also, drapes was giving me errors every time at startup....very annoying.
Or am I just missing something with the programs I've been trying? It's surprising that those programs wouldn't have more options available for dual monitor setups.

I am running Slackware64 -current. I just upgraded KDE to 4.6.0 from Alien Bob's ktown repo, and upon doing so my battery monitor no longer functions properly. More specifically, the icon will appear in the panel, but when I choose the option to show the charge/discharge state it does not show. The icon only ever shows that the battery is not plugged in to an external power source (showing a plug and a red x). It is important that I get the battery monitor functional once again as I am running my new Slackware64 -current install on a laptop and don't like to be left wondering when my laptop's battery will die and if I need to plug it in.

I have tried searching for the same problem but can't find it. Close but not exact. I have a dell optiplex I use for internet surfing. I do a reformat every few months to get the junk off it.I do a reformat to clean the drive and load XP PRO then load ubuntu 7. or 8. It gives me the option to use either at start up.
I did it a few weeks ago and it has been running fine until I did updates of both XP and ubuntu. When I it fired it up Win XP worked fine but when I choose ubuntu I would get the corrupted or missing hal.dll error and it wouldnt go any further. Several reboots with the same result XP works but not ubuntu.I did a reinstall of the hal.dll file using XP disk for repair according to britec on ..... (but I didn' t do the second step yet). Now I still get the corrupted or missing hal.dll error when I try to get into ubuntu and if I choose XP it freezes. I try going into safe mode and it loads but (wireless) mouse/keyboard won't work.
