Unity won't auto hide itself when I open a program, and it gets in the way of things like Google Chrome. This seems to only happen when using Unity 3D, not 2D. I'm using the experimental NVIDIA Drivers, but the problem was also present when I used the proprietary drivers. I have an Acer Aspire 5630 with a GeForce Go 7300.

It takes a few seconds for the launcher to reappear when I point the cursor in the left corner of the screen which is a bit of a delay when I quickly want to multitask between multiple applications.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile I think Unity has its many ups and downs, I found it usable enough to choose it as my default desktop, after some customization. Somewhere in tweaking the desktop with ccsm - or elsewhere - I did something boneheaded. Now when a new window opens at the top of the screen, its title bar is hidden under the Unity panel. I could just wipe everything out and start over, but I kinda like the way things work on my desktop - with this exception. Where I might look to figure out what is letting windows be placed all the way up under the panel.
I did try creating a new account and looking at ccsm config export and comparing it to mine, but did not see anything useful. The only thing I changed with respect to window placement/handling, AFAIK, is disabling maximization at the top of the screen (in 'Grid' module); restoring that did not help. The problem turns out to be caused by using a window type 'panel' in my conky config. Changing the window type to 'desktop' cured the problem. Did not dive any deeper to analyse exactly what conky 'panel' windows do to interfere with Compiz/Unity.
With openSUSE 11.1 and SLES 11 I was able to hide the autologin window by doing the following:
Yast2 > System > /etc/sysconfig editor >
Then within "/etc/sysconfig editor":
Desktop > Display Manager > DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN = user
My user account does autologin as it should.
However, the autologin is displayed.
This screen shows the login window, the default SUSE green background and a bottom panel. Even if it only shows for a few seconds (and then goes away by itself), it is quite annoying as it ignores my current theme and no bottom panel. Is there another way to go around this? Or could this be a bug since it worked fine for openSUSE 11.1 and SLES 11? I'm using an Intel Atom N270 (945GSE + ICH7) with Intel GMA 950 type of system.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm very much used to typing "evo" for launching evolution, chrom to get chromium etc, when on alt+f2.
Now, in Unity, I get suggestions as icons when typing, but not the "auto-complete" I had in 10.10.
It's annoying to have to use the mouse to select the application to run each time.
I've been using ubuntu since the first releases. A long time. Prior to that it was slackware or debian even for desktop use. I admire the work that goes into the ubuntu project and believe it's one of the best desktop disributions on the market today. At least up to version 10.10. However, and this is where the issues are, 11.04 is less than anything I would ever consider using for a desktop, and for numerous reasons. Unity is just garbage. The design of ubuntu 11.04 with all the shadowing, glossy icons etc.. doesn't pass go, doesn't collect 200 dollars. And having a delay of almost 87 seconds to load the garbage to the desktop is not adequate for those that use desktops in productive environments.
My recommendation to Cononical at this point would be to drop the whole direction and get back to what people need in a desktop. 10.04 and 10.10 were good examples of what Cononical is capable of, and produced one of the best desktop linux distributions to date available at any price. Both for the average daily user, and the enterprise user base.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I first logged in. And worked to figure out how any why everything on the desktop should be drug to the trash can on install. Needless to say, that is exactly what happened and the machines being worked on had to be re-installed with 10.10 - 10.04 LTS after a removal of unity left one machine in an unusable state.
I am both advised and aware of what can and cannot be achieved with the login disfunction and the configuration options to disallow the Unity desktop. But even after disabling the Unity desktop, the system did not perform to satisfaction. Thus the attempt at removal of Unity.
If the ubuntu team continues in the current direction, I have a feeling there will be quite a few abandoning ship with this distribution and move towards a more productive type atmosphere with other linux's. I'm completely shocked that a team of the best linux gurus on the planet could make such a mess out of years of superior work producing a quality productive desktop environment. This is just my opnion, I don't post feedback to responses. See you when I have another complaint if I'm still interested in Ubuntu.
Like, if I drag a window to the top of the screen, somehow this is supposed to mean I want the window full screen. Screw that if I wanted it full screen I'd have clicked the button on the top of the menu. Windows 7 does this too and it just as annoying.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to 11.04 and I've been tweaking Unity to get the desktop just the way I like it. I've come across two minor problems though:
1. When I tweak the icon size settings in the Unity tab of CCSM, the icons do not change size; they remain at the default "48" setting regardless of what I type in.
2. When I set the Unity launcher to auto-hide (also in the Unity tab of CCSM), it stays at the default "dodge windows" setting.
Are there any workarounds to change these settings when tweaking them in CCSM's interface does not work? (Or is there some trick I don't know to get CCSM to work properly?)
I'm having sporadic issues with the openoffice.org program. Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.

Do you know of any dvd copying program? like without making the image and then burning with just one process just copy the disc sorta program like roxio dvd copier? I wanted to make copies of movies I made a dvd of but aside from image burn which is a hassle to make the image first. is there something for burning on the fly or dvd/cd copying? infrarecorder and cdburnerxp do not work for me at all.

The thing that bugs me the most is the fact that each program has its menu (ie File, Edit etc) in the top panel. This may be fine for netbooks but not my laptop.I just launched Tomboy, which startde with its window in the bottom right of the screen, however to get to the programs menu I have to move the cursor all the way to the top right of the screen - miles.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI can't hide the launcher in unity 3D. In 2D, it works fine, hides when i open a program, looks normal, everything. In 3D, it stays on top of whatever program I'm running. What I've tried Reinstalled unity 2D. (apt-get remove, apt-get install) For whatever reason, when I log into 3D without 2D installed, it looks like gnome, but the screen is garbled, the images disappear, menus come up as plain black squares, i literally can't even open a program. Once I install unity 2D, 3D works fine, but I can't hide the launcher. Messed around with CCSM. I tried each option under hide launcher in unity plugin (never, autohide, dodge windows, dodge active windows). None of them change anything. Updated everything through update manager (last night actually). Both 2D & 3D look and work fine, no lag or sluggish behavior. All of the effects look normal. I just can't get rid of the big launcher covering up everything I do! I've just been using 2D, although I would like to use 3D.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI got 11.04 installed on my laptop a few weeks ago and all seemed well. I've only used this machine for general surfing and downloads (legal of course )Anyway, last night it started to display some odd or should I say, show stopping issues.
Issue 1. Clicking the Home Folder button at the top of the left launcher does nothing. Well when I say nothing is does dim the icon, the hard drive turns but no folder opens. OS function 101 failure.
Issue 2. Inserting a USB stick (that just last week we working fine) does nothing. Again, when I say nothing, the harddrive light goes on, but the USB drive does not open.
Issue 3. Unable to get my home folder open in the Ubuntu 11.04 Unity system I downloaded Sunflower, a file browser app. It runs fine from the command line, but when the I decided to make a shortcut to this on the desktop, I right clicked on the desktop in order to use the Create Launcher option. But guess what? The right click does not reveal any menu. Right clicking on the desktop does nothing.
This is not good enough for what is suppose to be a mature stable OS!I really do not want to go to Fedora 15 or <shudder> Windows 7 so, how do I fix this broken system? Is there some system repair that reinstalls the OS or something? Is there a system repair that does not require me getting all the updates again?
I need to auto-mount a storage device AND execute a program passing mount point path to it. How can i do this? I'd like to avoid polling for new storage devices. I'm looking for something like acpid for ACPI events, but working with storage plug events instead.
