I upgraded to 11.04. A app called Pytrainer did not work when downloaded through Ubuntu Software Center. So I downloaded the latest version from their website. It works! However, it did not add a shortcut to the applications menu. Instead, I copied the executable file to the desktop, which is more convenient. But I'd also like it in my applications menu.
How can I do that?
Can i place a some cool shortcuts to different application on my desktop. How can I get these cool looking shortcuts. I also want to know that can I put some Gadgets on desktop like gadgets in Windows 7.
View 2 Replies View RelatedNot sure if it's something I did/didn't do but when I click in the upper left corner to bring up the menu (with Media Apps, Internet Apps, More Apps & Find Files) clicking on any of those doesn't prompt a response, no error is given either. When I type in the top bar something such as Terminal it doesn't do anything (although I can still get to Terminal with ctrl+alt+t).
View 7 Replies View Relatedyesterday I was moving some launchers in the menu editor, going a bit too fast, and I accidentally hit delete on the "Internet" menu. In an attempt to get it back, I deleted ~/.local/share/applications and ~/.gconf/apps/panel, assuming they'd be automatically replaced. I ran the updater today and it updated gnome-panel, so I $ killall gnome-panel 'd just in case, and once again nothing. I have all the custom launchers from ~/.local/share/applications saved onto my desktop, but right now I need all the original launchers back. I don't even have the software management launcher! It just shows me a little tiny black stripe because it's completely empty. BTW, I'm running Lucid 64.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 11.4. I've played with different versions of Picasa, installing the Linux version via Ubuntu Software Center and also using Wine. At a certain point I had several versions of the application installed and things were getting. When I search for Picasa in the Unity application search field (clicking the button with the dot in the centre at the top left of my screen) I got several results for Picasa, some of which when clicked would start Picasa and some which wouldn't. When I remove all versions of Picasa both from Wine and native I still get some results for Picasa which don't start Picasa when clicked.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to F13 and I think its 13 for a reason - very unlucky for me. Screwed up my other Windows partition and I had to reinstall the entire machine (both OS's). Installing from scratch, didn't install everything, like I wanted. This changed in F13 install procedure. So now I'm trying to install Pidgin. Installed it with yum, but there's no shortcut in KDE menu. Why doesn't the install add this link? How do I add it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have some problem making shortcuts for 2 games to my Application/games menu. The menu you can edit by writing "alacarte" in the terminal. So this is how I do, I have 1 game, its a Linux client of the game Tibia, ive unpacked it and its in a folder inside my home folder. If I double click on either Tibia or StartTibia.sh the game starts without any trouble, but if I open alacarte and browse to that location and choose either Tibia or StartTibia.sh and then click on the new item in the Game menu nothing opens. Here is the location I browse to:
/home/som99/Spel/Tibia/StartTibia.sh
The next problem is with a windows game installed with wine, if I drag the existing shortcut file to the panelbar I get the icon there and can just click it and start it without any trouble, but I want it to be inside the applications/games menu. So I go to the alacarte editor and browse to the main directory of the file inside /home/som99/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/gamename/game.exe and press ok but when I try to start it it asks for its main files located at Z:homesom99 the funny thing is that it starts if I move all files inside the games main folder to home without putting them in any folder :/
So I tried to write the following as is written in the working shortcut in wine:
wine "C:Program FilesTibiagame.exe" and I get the same error as it somehow think that the locations is homesom99 :S
Also adding in properties of the new shortcut item the following:
"/home/som99/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/game" wine game.exe
I get this error while trying to start it:
Failed to execute child process "/home/som99/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/game" (Permission denied)
I have put permission on the folders but same result.
As I am going to make alot of shortcuts to many programs both trough wine and games I've unpacked I would like to know how to do this.
I might add that if I open the terminal and write:
cd /home/som99/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/game
to get to the folder then writes:
wine game.exe
Then the game starts without any trouble.
Is there a way to maintain what shortcuts appear in the Places menu item. Right clicking shortcuts just opens them.

i am having a problem on Ubuntu 10.10. In system menu, there is no Administration or Preferences menu.Also, application menu does not show anything. I am using Ubuntu since 2 weeks and still not used to to the terminal commands for running applications and admin tools.
one more thing.When i booted my PC today it reported an error and process terminated before reaching the login window. So i restarted and chose recovery mode. it also reported some errors and tried to fix the problem. it deleted some files i think. and my system is working again but with above mentioned problem.
When I open a folder on the gnome desktop or within a subfolder everything seems to work fine. However, when I open a folder from the "places" menu on the top screen panel, it opens the folder in a different app (emacs). Is there a way to fix this behavior?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI often use the option in Chromium to create 'application shortcuts'. These are instances of Chromium that make a website look more like an app by not including most of Chromium's toolbars. I use it for gmail and google docs and spreadsheets and calendar. In 11.04 I have set up Desktop launchers and copied them across to the Launcher (what an odd way to add something to the launcher, why no right-click 'add launcher' option?)
The problem is that the launcher thinks all these apps are chromium (which they are really, but I would like them to be seen as separate apps). If I minimize my gmail window, a little triangle appears next to the chromium icon, not the gmail icon. To get the window back, I have to click on the Chromium icon. Clicking on the gmail icon launches a new instance of it (also tied to the Chromium icon).
How do I add new icons into the Application menu (not the launcher) and into the "Ubuntu" menu with the large icons? I have tried using the "Main Menu" tool to add new things but they don't appear.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a problem trying to add a luncher in my application menu. I installed netgen and it works fine. If I try to launch it from the terminal like "$ netgen", it does work. It also works if I double click on the program icon in its folder. But when I try to make a launcher in the menu, it doesn't. I tried both Application (nothing happens) and Application in Terminal (I see a window flash for a second and then it disappears).

The application name on lots of programs shows up non capitalized or in the picture above the name of Google Chrome shows up as 'google-chrome'. Being the extremely organized person I am (verging on OCD), this bugs me. A lot. Is there any way to change it?
I have problem regarding when a application is started from the menu-line. If I for example start wxmaxima though Menu -> Science -> Wxmaxima, then the menu-bar is gone. I can access the menu-bar by pressing F10, but the menubar never shows up!
I have the same experience with emacs 23, where the menu-bar starts as it should, but whenever I change major (or minor) mode, the new menu-item appears, but I cannot access the menu-item (it is just blank). As before, whenever I go though F10 the menuitem shows up as it should.
Same goes for eclipse.
Instead of starting the applications though the Menu -> ..., I tried to start them in the terminal instead. Then the applications do not suffer from this menubar behaviour.
I noticed a few minutes ago that although I can open the Places and System menus fine, when I click on Applications it highlights but no drop down menu appears beneath it as usual, and when I right click and select Edit Menus also nothing happens.
I have since restarted which did not resolve the issue.
How can I remedy this, and what could have caused the problem to begin with?
I am running 11.04.
My application launcher on the left side and the main menu bar at the top of the screen have disappeared. When I boot up, all I see is my desktop background and "Computer" icon.
I was messing around with the compiz settings and enabled and then disabled the cube effects. When I did so I disabled some plugins but can't remember which ones.
My application bars are all missing their menu bars. They were showing up (along with the application title) on the top panel but I ran 'nohup gnome-panel' to at least make my system partially usable (i.e. this restores the top panel and the bottom 'bar' that has the running application icons and it also restored my close/minimize/maximize buttons to my windows).

I restarted and when i boot up, there is no more menu bar or application bar (running 11.04) I boot into classic or safe mode and the bars are there. i already tried right click > change background > changed theme with no success.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed KDE from the Ubuntu Software Center. Now I have the following... well, I wont call them problems, rather just annoyances.
1. The mouse pointer is KDE's pointer (I presume) in both interfaces.
2. I have mixed applications in the menus of both GNOME and KDE... GNOME has KDE's stuff and KDE has GNOME's stuff.
3. The Ubuntu screen at shutdown turned to Kubuntu regardless of being in GNOME.
The first and last one is not much of a problem for me, but is there a way of restoring each interface's default menu items? Since I know what I manually installed, I can just enable them again in Main Menu of Administration in GNOME and in KDE wherever that setting will be. If not, can someone maybe just give me a menu list in text or pics (ok, I know this might be asking a lot) so I can at least only have GNOME stuff in GNOME and KDE in KDE.
I am using ubuntu 10.04 LTS version. can i know how to get application menu toolbar in the mentioned ubuntu version.
