Can I remove the workspaces button from unity-2d? The workspace switcher is super slow in unity-2d, and I don't want to use it (instead, using the ALT+CTRL+Arrows) but I don't want to accidentally click it.
View 2 RepliesThe old way of doing this in gconf-editor (gnome power settings) is now invalid. Here is the new way of doing this! First install devicekit-power:
#aptitude install devicekit-power EDIT (aptitude install upower) installed by default on Lucid
Then edit the power policy: #sudo gedit /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.upower.policy
Under the following headings perform the following changes:

I've been using Natty(unity as desktop) since the beta now and it is really growing on me except for the workspaces. Is there a way to see what workspace I am on? *When typing I usually switch with ctrl-alt-"left/right/up/down" but after some work i don't always know what desktop i am one so switching is usually trial and error jumping from desktop to desktop or pressing super-s to get an overview. Seeing which desktop I'm on (maybe in the unity workspace button) would help with that.
*When just using the mouse I used to click on the workspace launcher and I would be on the desktop of my choice in one click but now I need to click on the switcher, identify where I am and where I need to go and it breaks the flow of fast switching, its no advantage anymore compared to just opening all programs on 1 workspace and using super-w I guess there are upcoming changes on the switcher as unity is still in its infancy so is there a way to put the old switcher in the top panel again?
I don't want to use more than one workspace. On previous versions of Ubuntu, I was able to reduce the number of workspaces to 1 and and remove the workspace switcher from the panel. I want to do this in Unity and can't find a way to. Right clicking doesn't let me remove from the launcher and I can find no way to reduce the workspaces.

It seems like Unity is designed more for the average newbie than for the power user. Yet, I'm willing to give it a shot. with the following things I'm missing now (that I had in Compiz)?
1. I had Ctrl-Alt-<workspace number> setup to move the current window directly to that workspace. (Ctrl-Shift-Alt-Arrow?? Really? Four keys at once and a couple of arrow pushes???)
2. I had Ctrl-Shift-<workspace number> to move the current window directly to that workspace without following it.
3. Pressing the middle button on the desktop initiated grabbing the cube and turning it.
4. Moving the scroll wheel while on the desktop would rotate the cube.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried to enable desktop-cube on unity, and when it did that it disable the unity compiz plugin.When it did that it removed the entire top bar that we has the buttons to min,max, and exit. As well as all windows default to the very top-left side of screen and under the the top bar so I Can not move the window ether.I turned it back to the unity plugin, but it did not work. Even tried to complete remove and install compiz and unity. This does not affect Unity 2D.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI started an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 and it stopped with the message: Ubuntu desktop is listed to be removed but is on the removal blacklist. Then it restored back to 8.04. I don't know how to resolve this - it would be alright to remove the old Ubuntu desktop.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI believe I may have found a bug in Unity. Under the right circumstances an application will jump from the workspace where I left them to my current workspace. This is most noticeable with VirtualBox. I built an Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine so that I could test out new packages before I push them out to the rest of my machines. But the window for the virtual machine constantly appears in my current workspace. It may take a few minutes, or 30 minutes, but it will happen.
I can kind of understand it if a new window appears, but at least with VirtualBox, this happens on a running virtual machine seemingly randomly.
Running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit.Is there a way to setup each workspace to have different icons on each workspace. Example:
Workspace 1 = Internet icon stuff (IM, Browsers, Etc...)
Workspace 2 = Multimedia icons (Video Editors, Music Clients)
Is there any way to have workspaces on multiple rows without the workspace switcher added to a panel? I have limited screen space so i want to try and remove any unnecessary items. I have tried using a drawer, but the workspace application is not loaded until the drawer is opened once. Also note I am not running compiz as the computer is a netbook.

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.
i was so happy using the window buttons applet in gnome panel. it was working fine in maximize window , now suddenly i find the close button has vanished i tried to remove and re install, changed theme and all the jugglery within my limits... have absolutely no idea what went wrong, any clue ? to get back the "CLOSE" button ? its funny with just the minimize and restore button visible in maximised mode... its the close button i use most in maximise mode

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been having problems with AWN's shiny switcher (the desktop switcher app for AWN). On startup it often, but not always, appears as two identical switchers side by side. After changing any of the preferences of the switcher it returns to normal. After restarting the problem continues. I have tried complete removal of the program, deleting any files or folders that look like they have anything to do with AWN settings, and restarting. But after reinstalling it seems that all the settings stay the same. Where exactly are AWN settings saved, specifically the settings for applets? I will try to post a screen-shot of how the applet appears when I restart later.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satellite L300 with 160GB HD dual booting 11.04 and Vista. I have now got VB working to run the two programmes I only need windows for. So my HD has 90GB for Vista and the rest is for 11.04, what is the best way to remove Vista and leave the HD free for Ubuntu only? Do I just back everything up to an external HD and reinstall?? (But I have a few problems get some things to work) So not sure if this is the right option for me or is there another way?

I'm running SuSe 11.2 32 bit. I noticed today that what ever program, window, or what have you I open there is no close "X" button or resize button in the top right corner.
