Ubuntu :: Force Removal Of A .deb Package?

Oct 26, 2010

I have installed the newest version of Peppermint Ice (Ubuntu derivative) on my Eee PC 701's internal HD and would like to get some more space on the drive (2GB total) by removeing packages like hunspell-en-ca, but synaptic warns me that language-support-writing-en will be removed. How can I force removal of this and similar packages like myspell-en-au, without uninstalling English language support?

Ubuntu :: Update Installed Packages List Or Force Removal Of Package?

Jul 21, 2011

I was working on my flash drive install of Ubuntu, when I squashfsed my /usr. Long story short, I some how ended up with a working /usr, but with a few packages marked as installed, but not having its components installed (emacs). When I try to remove emacs (emacs23-nox), it gives me numerous errors about files (all relating to emacs) not existing (all in /usr). Thus my questions are as follows:

1) Is there a way to force the removal without it caring about missing packages?

-OR-

2) Is there a way to reload which packages are installed by checking which files exist, etc?

-OR-

3) Should I just nuke and re-install?

Ubuntu :: Synaptic Package Manager Complete Removal

I just installed VLC player 1.1.2, but during installation it says it requires a whole bunch of other packages to be installed as well (dependencies is the word for it I think). So I installed them. So if I want to remove VLC player 1 day, and I mark it for complete removal, will the dependencies be uninstalled as well?

Ubuntu :: Clean Up Hidden Files After Package Removal

Oct 4, 2010

I have noticed that after I uninstall a package from my system the hidden files in my home directory are still there. For example I used to have an application called proxychains installed. But then after I uninstalled it with the Ubuntu Software Center there was still a .proxychains folder in my home folder. Is there a way to remove all these files? Also are they stored anywhere else except home? I ask because I would like to clean up my system and I am O.K. with reconfiguring my applications if I do decide to install them at a later date.

I started an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 and it stopped with the message: Ubuntu desktop is listed to be removed but is on the removal blacklist. Then it restored back to 8.04. I don't know how to resolve this - it would be alright to remove the old Ubuntu desktop.

Ubuntu :: How To Force Reinstall Package After Removing

Jun 7, 2010

I'm trying to re-install tomcat6 after removing it and all it's dependencies, but it got corrupt when trying to re-install. I'm on Ubuntu Sever Lucid 10.04 LTS with command line only.

I started with:
Code:
sudo apt-get auto-remove tomcat6
Then I deleted the /etc/tomcat6 directory manually since it contained file settings I didn't want. I assumed it would automatically install the missing files.

Then I tried re-installing tomcat6 as follows:
Code:
sudo apt-get install tomcat6

This yielded an error:
Code:
Setting up tomcat6 (6.0.24-2ubuntu1) ...
chmod: cannot access `/etc/tomcat6/tomcat-users.xml': No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing tomcat6 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Setting up authbind (1.2.0build3) ...

Errors were encountered while processing:
tomcat6
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
How are you supposed to completely remove a package and re-install it normally?

I would have thought that removing a given kernel package would trigger the removal of the older kernel headers. Can someone confirm that is, or is not, the behavior? So, when I get around to removing the linux-image-2.6.25-2-amd64 package like this:

(In fact, graph-tool_xxx.deb asks for libcgal4. squeeze only has libcgal5, so I am betting this is not an issue, as far as graph-tool is concerned.)

Fedora :: How To Force A Package "downgrade"

May 28, 2010

I installed F13 on a system by doing and install from an F12 Live USB key and then doing an update do F13. Unfortunately the upgrade failed to update a package because it thought the F12 package was more recent. I can't just do a clean install of F13 because I'm in Massachusetts and the system is in Chicago so I need to be able to fix this remotely.

I tried to install Google Chrome. I'm getting the following error, package nss-softokn-freebl-3.12.4-19.fc12.x86_64 (which is newer than nss-softokn-freebl-3.12.4-17.fc13.i686) is already installed As you can see the F12 package is -19 and the F13 package is -17 which is confusing yum. Is there a way to force yum to install the F13 package?

Ubuntu :: Complete Removal Of The Program?

I've been having problems with AWN's shiny switcher (the desktop switcher app for AWN). On startup it often, but not always, appears as two identical switchers side by side. After changing any of the preferences of the switcher it returns to normal. After restarting the problem continues. I have tried complete removal of the program, deleting any files or folders that look like they have anything to do with AWN settings, and restarting. But after reinstalling it seems that all the settings stay the same. Where exactly are AWN settings saved, specifically the settings for applets? I will try to post a screen-shot of how the applet appears when I restart later.

Ubuntu :: Removal From Dual Boot With Windows 7?

Dec 10, 2010

i was using windows 7 and started to get sick of windows completely, so i installed ubuntu and was dual booting between the two.. somewhere down the line i had made a mistake (can't remember exactly what) and instead of properly fixing the issue i decided to re-install ubuntu, but in doing so i now have created another partition and another install of ubuntu, so i have 2 ubuntu's an a windows 7. i would like to remove the 2 ubuntus and remove the partitioning to return to just having windows 7 installed and then i intend to install ubuntu studio. i have done some searching on this issue and i am still not entirely sure what needs done and how to do it without messing anything up.

i have read that i need to run fdisk /mbr from a windows command prompt and that this will fix the master boot record and return it to only having the option to boot into windows, but i also read that this can cause problems if the disk has more than 4 partitions (which it does, courtesy of 3 OS's and a couple of storage partitions).

so in summary: remove both ubuntu installations and return the disk to the partitions that were there before i installed ubuntu the first time.

would like to get this sorted out and eventually just get rid of windows altogether. there are a few windows programs that i will miss, but ubuntu studio seems to have most of them covered so after a bit of learning and adapting there will hopefully be no need for the unstable, expensive, non-secure heap of crap that is microsoft windows.
