Ubuntu :: Complete Removal Of Vista?

Aug 14, 2011

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 with 160GB HD dual booting 11.04 and Vista. I have now got VB working to run the two programmes I only need windows for. So my HD has 90GB for Vista and the rest is for 11.04, what is the best way to remove Vista and leave the HD free for Ubuntu only? Do I just back everything up to an external HD and reinstall?? (But I have a few problems get some things to work) So not sure if this is the right option for me or is there another way?

Ubuntu :: Complete Removal Of The Program?

Jan 12, 2011

I've been having problems with AWN's shiny switcher (the desktop switcher app for AWN). On startup it often, but not always, appears as two identical switchers side by side. After changing any of the preferences of the switcher it returns to normal. After restarting the problem continues. I have tried complete removal of the program, deleting any files or folders that look like they have anything to do with AWN settings, and restarting. But after reinstalling it seems that all the settings stay the same. Where exactly are AWN settings saved, specifically the settings for applets? I will try to post a screen-shot of how the applet appears when I restart later.

Ubuntu :: Synaptic Package Manager Complete Removal

So if I want to remove VLC player 1 day, and I mark it for complete removal, will the dependencies be uninstalled as well?

Debian :: Complete Removal Of Meta-packages Possible?

May 7, 2010

I'm wondering if complete removal of meta-packages, that being the package itself AND all of its dependencies, is possible in one command of aptitude and/or apt-get. For instance, if I have the whole kde installed, and wish to remove that whole load and replace it with the smaller kdebase, can I do this in two commands (IE, "aptitude remove kde", and then followed by "aptitude install kdebase"). The preceding commands wouldn't work, because just removing the initial meta-package would not remove its dependent packages. BUT, I'm wondering if there is a way to remove a meta-package AND its dependent packages all in one command (rather than having to go through individually removing each one).

Installation :: Unistall Windows Vista From An Ubuntu / Vista Dual-boot?

Mar 18, 2011

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Ubuntu :: Repairing Vista By Booting Vista From A USB Stick

Mar 22, 2011

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.

I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).

I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions

I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).

In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.

then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.

But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"

So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.

When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?

My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.

I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.

So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

There is a thread here explaining how to repair Vista bootloader

[url]

But it assumes that I am able to boot from CD-RW drive.

Fedora Installation :: Dual Booting Vista And / 11 Wipes Out Windows Vista?

Nov 18, 2009

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

Ubuntu :: Removal From Dual Boot With Windows 7?

Dec 10, 2010

i was using windows 7 and started to get sick of windows completely, so i installed ubuntu and was dual booting between the two.. somewhere down the line i had made a mistake (can't remember exactly what) and instead of properly fixing the issue i decided to re-install ubuntu, but in doing so i now have created another partition and another install of ubuntu, so i have 2 ubuntu's an a windows 7. i would like to remove the 2 ubuntus and remove the partitioning to return to just having windows 7 installed and then i intend to install ubuntu studio. i have done some searching on this issue and i am still not entirely sure what needs done and how to do it without messing anything up.

i have read that i need to run fdisk /mbr from a windows command prompt and that this will fix the master boot record and return it to only having the option to boot into windows, but i also read that this can cause problems if the disk has more than 4 partitions (which it does, courtesy of 3 OS's and a couple of storage partitions).

so in summary: remove both ubuntu installations and return the disk to the partitions that were there before i installed ubuntu the first time.

would like to get this sorted out and eventually just get rid of windows altogether. there are a few windows programs that i will miss, but ubuntu studio seems to have most of them covered so after a bit of learning and adapting there will hopefully be no need for the unstable, expensive, non-secure heap of crap that is microsoft windows.

Ubuntu :: AcerAspire One Removal On Mint Install?

Jun 17, 2011

AcerAspire One Ubuntu removal Aspire One D250 dual boot Windows XP/ Ubuntu 11.04. I want to install Mint4Win inside windows and remove my Ubuntu installation. The Acer One has it's own recovery program and I do not know how to access the Windows command for fixmbr followed by a deletion of Ubuntu partitions with gparted.

My concern is if I boot with gparted and delete my Ubuntu partitions and reboot I will still see options for an Ubuntu start or windows start even though I no longer would have Ubuntu installed. For example, with Mint installed, on boot an option appears and asks if you wish to boot into Mint or Windows. This occurs if Ubuntu is not installed. My question is basically how do I insure when I boot up my computer I don't have a situation in which I have to first make a decision between Ubuntu and Windows XP and if I select Windows I then have to make another decision as to whether I want to boot LinuxMint or Windows?

Hardware :: Removal Of WD SmartWare?

Jun 18, 2010

So tonight I bought a WD "My Passport" portable HD.Plug it in and KDE says there are two devices...One is the "My Passport" drive, the other one is a CD-ROM called "WD SmartWare" ... WTF?A bit of Googling led me to a Windows/Mac downloads page for a tool which hides, but doesn't remove this unwanted feature.Anyone had any experience with this? want to remove it. It has to go. I've no need for it, and it's taking up half a gig. What a joke.Edit: Some specifics:The virtual CD-ROM is showing up as /dev/sr2, while the main partition shows up as /dev/sdc1.I've tried mounting sr2 with the 'rw' option, but mount reports that this can't be done. fdisk tells me that there are no spare sectors on sdc, and that there are no partitions at all on sr2. What's going on? How do I fix this? In case you can't tell, this is p___ing me off.
