Ubuntu :: Uninstalling Kubuntu - Grub Loader Error 22
Jan 10, 2010
I have a dual boot Vista/ Kubuntu and my vista SP2 has made both my vista and kubuntu unable to boot completely. I've been through many steps to recover vista but no restore point works and such so I am going to use my Toshiba recovery partition to reinstall but what I'm wondering is if after I do that will the grub loader be affected and give me the error 22? The two are on separate partitions and I've been meaning to get rid of Kubuntu from my laptop since I have it on my pc

Not a major issue but my Ubuntu boot screen change to the old classic Orange theme after i installed Kubuntu on a different drive and ofcourse a new Grub loader as the Kubuntu installation prompted. It can't be because of the Kubuntu installation but i can't find any other reason for that to happen.

I tried to install Open Office following a guide in OpenOffice.org but after several attempts debian refused to boot properly. I decided to re-install Debian 5.0. When we came to the installation of the boot loader GRUB refused to be installed. I stopped the installation expecting to go back to the beginning. But now it tries to boot saying:Grub loading stage 1.5.
Grub loading, please wait...
Error 15
This is an old Toshiba 3110 with Windows 98SE installed which I have successfully customized and do not want to loose. What can I do to get back into W98SE and then re-install Debian properly?

I installed Backtrack 4 and it is set up as a dual boot with my Windows 7 x64 bit. I want to uninstall Backtrack because I am going to put it on a different computer. The problem is - I can't do it. My laptop is an Asus K61IC, and it doesn't come with an installation CD, because the OS was factory installed. It comes with a recovery wizard instead, which gives me the options to 1) recover to first partition only, 2) recover to entire HD, and 3) recover to entire HD with 2 partitions. Because of Grub and it asking for me to choose what operating system to boot when I start my computer, when I recover Windows 7 to the entire HD and try to boot, it gives me Grub error 22. I need to fix my MBR so that the grub menu is also deleted and all of Backtrack 4 is removed, actually letting me back onto my Windows 7. I need a way to delete the Linux partition, and fix the MBR, but I don't know how to do that because I don't have an installation disk.

I have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed. It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?

I have a Windows 7 OS installed as my main OS, it installed on its own HDD with 3 other data storage drives.
On my 5th drive I installed a copy of OpenSUSE 11.02 to see if I like it. I have decided I don't wish to keep it so I reformatted the drive while in Win7. Of course on restart I got the Grub 1.5 Error 22. All my HDD's are seperate and there are no partitions.
I have had to reinstall OpenSUSE just to get my PC to boot.
All I want to is remove OpenSUSE from my computer without losing my Win 7 install.
My Win 7 install disc fails to recognise my Win 7 so I can not get the recovery command prompt/repair options.
Can someone explain in say 5 simple steps to get back my original MBR so I can boot straight to Windows as I can't seem to find a guide that actually explains what to do. Either by doing it in OpenSUSE 11.02 or Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I am unable to get a knoppix poor mans install to boot using grub and opensuse 11.3. I have tried the same method on another box, same opensuse 11.3 and it boots fine. However, no matter what partition I put the knoppix files in on the problem box, it is the same error. I also have several opensuse kernels listed in the grub menu that were added when the kernel was updated, so the knoppix grub entry is off the screen. I have to down arrow to list the knoppix entry. I read that with this kind of error using ubunto as the host system, that running update-grub will force grub to look for bootable kernels and add it to the menu of boot choices. Does the same fix apply to opensuse 11.3? I have two versions of puppy linux working on this box as a poor mans install, so I am at a loss why it will not see the knoppix kernel. Can it be a problem of too many kernels listed in the menu.lst file? This box is a live update from opensuse 11.0.

I used proprietary software (acronis trueimage) to clone an Opensuse 11.1 machine, onto another machine with somewhat distinct hardware (different motherboard, less memory). I expected to have to change entries in /boot/grub/menu.lst, /etc/fstab, etc. I was told a good way to do this was to use the Opensuse DVD's "repair installed system" feature.
When I ran the repair, I was informed that "bootloader configuration file contains errors". I attempted to re-install the bootloader, but received this unhelpful error: "An error occurred during boot loader installation. Retry boot loader configuration?". When I boot the system, I just see the text "GRUB ", followed by a flashing underscore character.

So it was a fresh FC10 install, but it would hang up, and only load if i hit the keypad/mouse, which it still does. Eventually it gets to the shell login screen. root login and i then did a yum update, which got me to the current build. that didnt work. NO x window still.
tried startx again, got me an error. found something that said add "vga=ask" to the grub loader, which still loads into shell, but when i do startx, it made me a xorg.conf.new, which i copied into /etc/X11 rebooted and tried again. still have to move the mouse or keypad for the load to start (no idea y) but it loads to shell, and startx works.

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media. An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1
I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally. What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.

I made a slight mistake after editing my partitions with Gparted. I accidentally installed Grub 2 on my Ubuntu partition instead of re-installing it on the MBR.
I've since installed Grub 2 on my MBR, but how do I get the Grub 2 installation off of my Ubuntu partition?

I use Ubuntu on his edition 8.10 and have always been very pleased, until 11:04 last version. Actually used a dual boot for constant use of certain programs that only work on windows. By installing the latest version, everything is as before except that I can not see the initial grub, show me out of range. My boot loader resolution is 640x480 and still I can not see the grub at startup.

I have two hard-drives. The first, C: (sda1) has Windows 7 x64 installed on it. The second hard-drive, D: (sdb1), was partitioned when I installed Ubuntu 10.04 into two separate partitions: NTFS and Ext3.
I wanted to remove the Ext3/Ubuntu partition and reclaim that space (i.e. completely remove Ubuntu). I did NOT install using Wubi. I booted up Win7 x64, went into Disk Management, right-clicked the D: partition corresponding to the Ext3 filesystem (shows up as unrecognized in Disk Management), and opted to delete the volume. I then right-clicked on the NTFS D: partition, and opted to Extend the Volume to reclaim the previously partitioned space.
When I rebooted, I ended up with the following error:
Code:
error: no such device: f81368be-ea53-43d2-b8de-bb52b5ac322c.
grub rescue>
I cannot get beyond this screen. Rebooting always puts me at the grub rescue prompt. I have looked at the HOWTO: Purge and Grub Rescue Prompt threads, but was not able to understand the instructions and am therefore asking for your help. However, I was able to install the boot script as those threads suggest, and here is my results.txt:
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in
partition #2 for /boot/grub.

I'm dualbooting Slackware and Gentoo on my homeserver. Some weeks ago I built grub with a slackbuild-script, it was the new version of grub but it did not install properly. Since then I could only boot Slackware but not Gentoo. Today I tried to install grub from the Gentoo-partition (I chrooted to Gentoo). This did not work due to an errormessage of grub that "stage1 could not be read".
Afterwards I tried to install lilo, this failed at first attempt, but the with some warnings lilo executed. When I rebooted after the lilo-install, I had grub again at the bootscreen without the option to boot Gentoo. I decided that I have to clean the mbr of /dev/sda and found a solution with the dd command. Here my

Fortunately I have a second disk /dev/sdb in the server and have now installed the bootloader on the mbr of /dev/sdb. But in the long run I want to change this.

Every dual boot guide and every dual boot I've set up I've done the same way. Always install Windows first then install Ubuntu. Well, this time Windows didn't let go of the bootloader it seems like. I have kind of an awkward setup for hard drives...32gb SSD /2X250gb raid1 /home 3gb(at beginning of 1tb HDD) swap
The rest of the TB is Windows 7 Home Premium. I installed Windows 7 without problems the installed Ubuntu 10.04 x64 without problems. It asked if I wanted grub to overwrite mbr I said yes. Computer rebooted... Straight into Windows. I downloaded EasyBCD and added grub to Windows boot menu. The option works great, goes straight into grub. Grub even has Windows listed.
Why is my computer using Windows boot manager and how do I switch it to grub?

My laptop is set to dual boot, either Ubuntu 9.10 or Windows Vista. The GRUB loader has multiple entries, starting with Ubuntu, then several instances of Ubuntu recovery mode, before memory test and two entries for Vista, the first of which does not work. How do I delete the unwanted entries? I can press "e" to edit them, but if I do so how do I actually delete them, assuming it is safe to do so.

I have always been a Redhat user, and ESXi User. I decided to try ubuntu because of it's strong recommendations as a file server. I have tried several fixes listed in the forums with no luck. I tried the live CD and I have no issues there. I tried gparted, and it sees all my drives. Seeing that most ask for the boot info script to be run, i was proactive. I know its a boot issue with were grub is pointing too. However, that is where I get stuck. I am not an expert at using grub. In a Nut shell, I had no issues installing. I choose the Jmicron 150G Raid 1 drive. Used full drive space with LVM. When it came to reboot I did, and it just sits after it does the boot from cdrom. I hate to go back to windows 7 for a file server/web server. Oh Windows was installed at one point, I think that is where the script sees the GPT partitions.
