View 1 RepliesI have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed. It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?
Background: I am dual booting Debian and Window 7. Wanted to make windows-loader default and hide grub if possible. Google search took me here: [URL].... (third answer, about editing grub)
Make Windows (ANY variant) the default Grub2 menu option.
Description: This sets Windows as the default boot option, and (with NO user action) the PC will auto-launch Windows on startup.
STEPS:
A. sudo update-grub #List your current menu items
B. Edit setup file
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
GRUB_DEFAULT=”Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1″ #Set the boot default to your Windows boot partition
[WARNING: Just setting 'GRUB_DEFAULT=n', will NOT work after kernel updates, etc.
Save the file and close.]
sudo update-grub
Question: I must have done something wrong, for update-grub (as root) now gives this: "/usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 6: /etc/default/grub: 2: not found"
What should I do now to make grub as it was in the beginning?
[By the way, it's been very difficult to get Debian related pages...]
I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 dual-booted on my machine. grub was aautomaticlu installed as the primary loader. Soon i want to nuke my ubuntu partition but i know that will delete grub. Can i remove grub or at least make Windows boot loader default.

View 3 Replies View RelatedA failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media. An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1
I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally. What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.
I tried to install Open Office following a guide in OpenOffice.org but after several attempts debian refused to boot properly. I decided to re-install Debian 5.0. When we came to the installation of the boot loader GRUB refused to be installed. I stopped the installation expecting to go back to the beginning. But now it tries to boot saying:Grub loading stage 1.5.
Grub loading, please wait...

This is an old Toshiba 3110 with Windows 98SE installed which I have successfully customized and do not want to loose. What can I do to get back into W98SE and then re-install Debian properly?
PC: Dell Precision T7400.O/S: Windows XP SP3 64-bit & Scientific Linux 5.3 64-bit
The above PC has 2 HDDs installed one has XP and the other Scientific Linux.
Problem: XP needed to be re-installed, i've done this now but now the GRUB Boot loader doesnt load - So just boots straight into XP.
Qustion: Is there anywhere to fix the GRUB? Without wiping the 2nd HDD and re-installing Linux!
Let me know if you need any more info
I use Ubuntu on his edition 8.10 and have always been very pleased, until 11:04 last version. Actually used a dual boot for constant use of certain programs that only work on windows. By installing the latest version, everything is as before except that I can not see the initial grub, show me out of range. My boot loader resolution is 640x480 and still I can not see the grub at startup.

I've tried a few, but everytime I change the file *desktop, these desktop environments disappear from the options on GDM.

After installation of kernel, there may be some problems:
2. Win7 disappear in the grub: see the content below "Not see Windows 7: ", #6
3. Cannot connect to the network: see #8.
Quote: While trying to remove old kernels, I delete all of them by accident!!! There're now only two "Memory test" and a "win7" in the grub. Since there's lots of data on the disk, and I have no idea how to keep them safe if reinstalling the system, so I really hope not to do that.
Then I enter Ubuntu 10.10 cd, and sudo apt-get install a kernel (three 2.6.35 or so, of which two with "generic" and not, and one with "image"), everything seems OK. And I guess what I did really changed the system, since the source_list file in the /etc/apt/ did be changed. But the grub still has only 3 options. What else should I do to add the newly installed kernel to the grub? Or What should I do while I delete all kernels by accident?
When does the grub-pc splash screen disappear?
On my computer it is displayed until "Loading, please wait" appears i.e. after both initrd.img and the kernel are loaded.
A yes and no answer is enough.
I need to re install the grub loader on a Acer Netbook. I made a Live CD and tried to follow the directions given in the documentation but I am having no luck. Does anyone know a reasonably straight forward way to re-install GRUB back onto the native Hard Drive.

The rest of the TB is Windows 7 Home Premium. I installed Windows 7 without problems the installed Ubuntu 10.04 x64 without problems. It asked if I wanted grub to overwrite mbr I said yes. Computer rebooted... Straight into Windows. I downloaded EasyBCD and added grub to Windows boot menu. The option works great, goes straight into grub. Grub even has Windows listed.
Why is my computer using Windows boot manager and how do I switch it to grub?

View 2 Replies View RelatedHow do I clean up the GRUB boot loader version 1.97 Beta 4.
At the moment I have the following items listed:
And the list just gets longer with every update. Why doesn't it clean itself up and only display the latest version.
My laptop is set to dual boot, either Ubuntu 9.10 or Windows Vista. The GRUB loader has multiple entries, starting with Ubuntu, then several instances of Ubuntu recovery mode, before memory test and two entries for Vista, the first of which does not work. How do I delete the unwanted entries? I can press "e" to edit them, but if I do so how do I actually delete them, assuming it is safe to do so.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have always been a Redhat user, and ESXi User. I decided to try ubuntu because of it's strong recommendations as a file server. I have tried several fixes listed in the forums with no luck. I tried the live CD and I have no issues there. I tried gparted, and it sees all my drives. Seeing that most ask for the boot info script to be run, i was proactive. I know its a boot issue with were grub is pointing too. However, that is where I get stuck. I am not an expert at using grub. In a Nut shell, I had no issues installing. I choose the Jmicron 150G Raid 1 drive. Used full drive space with LVM. When it came to reboot I did, and it just sits after it does the boot from cdrom. I hate to go back to windows 7 for a file server/web server. Oh Windows was installed at one point, I think that is where the script sees the GPT partitions.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIt's in the title - I just want to change from the GRUB loader back to the Windows MBR loader. It's probably something simple, I guess. It's just I don't want to see the GRUB loader (first) when I turn on my computer I want to see the normal Windows MBR.
If I can do this, I'll use EasyBCD to add Ubuntu into the MBR so it can go to the GRUB loader to go into Ubuntu. I'm sorry if I'm not making much sense, I'm new to Ubuntu.
Basically the issue is that after I installed ubuntu 10.04 (on the same drive as Windows 7) I can no longer boot windows 7 from grub. When I select windows 7 in the grub boot menu it returns me to the boot menu.I looked through other posts who had similar problems, however, I wanted to post my own thread as I was unsure how to fix the problem based on information from other threads.
