Ubuntu :: Uninstalling Grub 2 From Partition?

Mar 21, 2010

I made a slight mistake after editing my partitions with Gparted. I accidentally installed Grub 2 on my Ubuntu partition instead of re-installing it on the MBR.

I've since installed Grub 2 on my MBR, but how do I get the Grub 2 installation off of my Ubuntu partition?

Ubuntu :: Windows Partition Not Detected And Uninstalling 11.04

Jul 23, 2011

i had windows 7 pre-installed in my laptop. i installed ubuntu 11.04 by making a bootable disk and did the partitioning so that both windows and ubuntu boot options would come on startup. however , when i switch on the laptop . the options do not come and ubuntu boots as if it is the default. i thought this might be due to a problem with grub 2 so i re-installed it. yet there was no difference. i want to uninstall ubuntu now. but how do it? most guides require me to access windows and create a rescue disk and changing the MBR. but since i cant access my windows partition this isnt an option. so there are 2 options for me - to make grub detect windows during boot and then use windows to make the MBR rite or to delete the system files of ubuntu to make it unbootable?

Ubuntu :: Uninstalling OS Resulted In Grub Rescue Prompt

Oct 26, 2010

I have two hard-drives. The first, C: (sda1) has Windows 7 x64 installed on it. The second hard-drive, D: (sdb1), was partitioned when I installed Ubuntu 10.04 into two separate partitions: NTFS and Ext3.

I wanted to remove the Ext3/Ubuntu partition and reclaim that space (i.e. completely remove Ubuntu). I did NOT install using Wubi. I booted up Win7 x64, went into Disk Management, right-clicked the D: partition corresponding to the Ext3 filesystem (shows up as unrecognized in Disk Management), and opted to delete the volume. I then right-clicked on the NTFS D: partition, and opted to Extend the Volume to reclaim the previously partitioned space.

When I rebooted, I ended up with the following error:

Code:

error: no such device: f81368be-ea53-43d2-b8de-bb52b5ac322c.
grub rescue>

I cannot get beyond this screen. Rebooting always puts me at the grub rescue prompt. I have looked at the HOWTO: Purge and Grub Rescue Prompt threads, but was not able to understand the instructions and am therefore asking for your help. However, I was able to install the boot script as those threads suggest, and here is my results.txt:

Code:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

Slackware :: Uninstalling Grub - Cleaning The Mbr

Dec 14, 2010

I'm dualbooting Slackware and Gentoo on my homeserver. Some weeks ago I built grub with a slackbuild-script, it was the new version of grub but it did not install properly. Since then I could only boot Slackware but not Gentoo. Today I tried to install grub from the Gentoo-partition (I chrooted to Gentoo). This did not work due to an errormessage of grub that "stage1 could not be read".

Afterwards I tried to install lilo, this failed at first attempt, but the with some warnings lilo executed. When I rebooted after the lilo-install, I had grub again at the bootscreen without the option to boot Gentoo. I decided that I have to clean the mbr of /dev/sda and found a solution with the dd command. Here my

Fortunately I have a second disk /dev/sdb in the server and have now installed the bootloader on the mbr of /dev/sdb. But in the long run I want to change this.

General :: Uninstalling From Windows 7 PC - Grub Error 22

Mar 15, 2010

I installed Backtrack 4 and it is set up as a dual boot with my Windows 7 x64 bit. I want to uninstall Backtrack because I am going to put it on a different computer. The problem is - I can't do it. My laptop is an Asus K61IC, and it doesn't come with an installation CD, because the OS was factory installed. It comes with a recovery wizard instead, which gives me the options to 1) recover to first partition only, 2) recover to entire HD, and 3) recover to entire HD with 2 partitions. Because of Grub and it asking for me to choose what operating system to boot when I start my computer, when I recover Windows 7 to the entire HD and try to boot, it gives me Grub error 22. I need to fix my MBR so that the grub menu is also deleted and all of Backtrack 4 is removed, actually letting me back onto my Windows 7. I need a way to delete the Linux partition, and fix the MBR, but I don't know how to do that because I don't have an installation disk.

is it possible to use a Windows-based recovery partition on a dual-boot computer to overwrite the Ubuntu partition and remove the GRUB loader? For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

Ubuntu :: Move Grub From One Partition To Another Partition?

May 8, 2010

I don't know if this is possible however would like to know how to move grub from one partition to another.I may not have explainded that very well. I have a computer that i use to checkout different linux distros, however since the introduction of grub2 things have become difficult. I have a number of primary partitions on the one hdd If I install a o/s that uses grub on a partition and another partition has a o/s that uses grub2 then on startup the o/s with grub2 no longer appears on the grub start up screen so I cannot boot into the grub2 o/s. The reverse is ok i.e. if I install a grub2 o/s after a grub o/s all appear on the grub start up screen.

This leaves me in the situation where I have to always reinstall a grub2 o/s after i install a grub o/s. Hope that makes sense! This is why it would be easier (I hope) to be able to move grub from one o/s to another. I must admit I don't really understand it all that well and I know that mbr plays a role in it, however I think it's correct that the mbr can remain on an o/s yet grub is on another?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub - Setup: Warning: Attempting To Install GRUB To A Partition Instead Of The MBR - Install - Lvm - Luks - Raid - Karmic Server

Mar 27, 2010

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]

If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.

Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'

Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

Apparently though, since I have Win7 on the other drive, Grub doesn't find it and won't generate a boot menu entry for it. I'm attempting to just add one to the menu by editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom, but those attempts aren't quite working. That adds an entry to the menu, but apparently I've got a parameter wrong somewhere.

Ubuntu :: No Such Partition Grub Rescue ?

Jul 28, 2011

I own a Sony Vaio VPCEB3AFM. It came with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, no disks or anything. The product key is on the back of the laptop. I later installed Ubuntu, as I was beginning to take an interest in the potential of computers and began to explore with different Operating Systems. I installed it along side Windows 7. THEN, me being the dumbass I am, installed BackTrack 5 also. I then called Sony in attempt to restore my computer to factory defaults and just have Windows 7 as my only operating system. I shut my computer down and then hit F10 until the Vaio Rescue shows up. It was in the process of Restoring when it restarted and an error message came up. It reads, Error: No Such Partition Grub Rescue>. I have no idea what to do none of the OS boot up when I start it. I have no disks, I have only Ubuntu on a USB drive which I boot up by changing the BIOS blah blah. But when I do not have it in, the error message occurs.

Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Hidden Partition And GRUB

Feb 18, 2010

I was installing Ubuntu on my new laptop (with plans to dual boot with Win 7) and, I'll admit, I did something stupid. You see, there was a 1 meg free space before the Windows 7 'hidden partition' and it was driving me nuts. So, what I did, was use gparted to move the hidden partition to the start of the drive (yes, a 1 meg move). Install of Ubuntu went off without a hitch, but after reboot things went a bit differently. The Recovery partition shows up as a possible boot partition in GRUB, in Windows 7 I can now see the recovery partition as a normal NTFS drive, and I can no longer use the features that the partition gives. I know this might be more of a 'ask on a Windows forum' question, but I was hoping someone else had done something like this and knew how to restore the hidden partition to being, well, hidden.

Ubuntu :: Install Grub To Specific Partition?

May 5, 2010

I have many partition for many different operating systems. I have Windows 7 on partition 2, and Ubuntu on partiton 3. Previously I could use GParted to set the boot flag for the drive to whichever partition I desired. If I set it to partition 2, I got the Windows bootloader, and if I set it to partition 3, I got the Ubuntu bootloader. Now if I set the boot flag to my Ubuntu partition, I get a message something along the lines of "disk not found". I can't recall its exact message at the moment. When setting up Ubuntu the installer has the "Advanced" button on the last page which gives you the option of which partition to install Grub to. Is there any way I can access this again, or a utility that will do the same thing? I have used the grub program in the following way to restore the Ubuntu bootloader

sudo grub
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)

but the boot flag is still on my Windows partition, suggesting Grub has overwritten Windows' bootloader. How can I tell grub which partition to install to? I'm using 10.04 and Grub2.
