i wonder why my ubuntu 10.10 don't have hibernate mode, as i remember in my previous install ubuntu 10.10 (in sama notebook) it's available i already don't have hibernate mode since, i format my last install ubuntu because driver vga. so i think it's not because not compatible softwareif it's hidden by somethings or bug how to show it again?

Does this means that the laptop does not have Sleep (or is it called hibernate) mode enable? How can I enable it?
This also happens with Debian that this laptop is dual booted with.

im currently using a RHEL5 RIS server in my Lab to deploy rhel5 for all my systems. everything has been configured and installation works fine, but i am not able to run the installation in text interface mode. when i type "linux text", i get an error saying invalid kernel parameter. i'll paste my /etc/dhcpd.conf file here. please have a look and let me know what changes i should be making in order for my text interface installation to be working.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed OpenSuse with GRUB boot-loader on my Vaio FW series laptop. I had to uninstall it because it caused Windows 7 to be unable to hibernate. I installed other distros (Fedora 11 and others) and the same problem recurred. This lead me to the conclusion that the problem is with the boot-loader (as my research suggested)..It has been months now, and I have not found any proper solutions to this yet. Linking this to Ubuntu, I recently downloaded and burned Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, however, I am still reluctant to install it until I know a solution is available. Has anyone had Linux-Windows 7 dualboot and also faced problems with hibernation/stand-by?

Whenever I click Suspend or Hibernate in Startup options of the OS: * the moon LED on the bottom of the lid flashes a few seconds, the screen quickly shows something like "some devices fail to suspend, error 5", * and then the moon LED goes off and the display still has ambient light illumination. I suppose in suspend or hibernation state, the display should have no illumination, just like when the laptop is turned off, right? * If I press any key, the unlock screen dialogue will pop out. I have installed 'acpi-support' and 'hibernate 1.99-1.1'. But I don't know how to use these methods to suspend or hibernate my OS. Are they by commands in terminate, or can they be called by clicking Suspend or Hibernate in Startup options of the OS? For example, I type the hibernation command and it shows something is missing although I have installed "tuxonice-userui" ( I don't know if it will provide Tuxonice binary signature file):

I've just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 (32 bits). Everything seemed to be working great until I tried to hibernate; now it just goes into a blank screen and the "crescent" hibernation/suspend blinking LED on my Lenovo X200 just keeps blinking, and I had to force-shutdown the computer to turn it off. In short, hibernation doesn't work for me in 10.10. This didn't happen prior to the upgrade.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 instead of 11.1 and installed a new kernel 2.6.33. And now I have a problem. When I try Shutdown -> Hibernate under simple user my screen becomes black and nothing happens. Then I move my mouse or press an key and I see my desktop and a window that asks me to enter my root password. I thought there is some problem with permissions so I logged in as a root and tried to hibernate but everything went the same way except there was no window to enter root pass. I checked my kernel config and hibernate is on there.

Also when I try to hibernate the machine this error msg will appear: hibernate:Warning: Tuxonice binary signature file not found.
How should I rectify this error?
I own an Acer Aspire 5552g. I have installed 2 systems on it: Windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. Everything works fine except wifi. There is a lot of threads connected to this topic, but none has solved my problem yet. The problem occurs when I hibernate Windows and then load ubuntu - I get unable to turn wifi on. As rfkill says - it is hard blocked. It wouldn't be a problem if i had a hard switch for wifi. but I only have fn+F3 for that, which somehow fails to work in my situation.

I just installed FEDORA 14 on my PC which already had Vista. I am able to dual boot through the GRUB boot loader. I am facing an issue where wired network in FEDORA stops working if I hibernate Vista. I really would like to be able to hibernate both to quicken the startup times.
Here are the steps:
1. Boot to Fedora (everything works fine including wired network)
2. Hibernate Fedora
3. Boot to Vista (everything works fine including networking)
4. Hibernate Vista
5. Boot to Fedora. It loads up fine, but wired network status icon keeps spinning and then results in a kernel package crash. I already reported the crash to Fedora.
6. Hibernate Fedora and boot to Vista (Vista resumes fine from hibernation and everything works in Vista including networking).
Is Fedora supposed to work when both Fedora and Vista are hibernated in a dual boot PC?If I shut down Vista, and then resume Fedora, networking works fine. So there is something in Vista hibernation that causes Fedora networking to fail. This issue remains even if Fedora is restarted (not hibernate/resume).
Environment: A 32-bit kernel RHEL5.3 system running on a virtual machine. The root(/) filesystem is on an LV.
Issue: Unable to resize the FS after extending the root LV since it is mounted. I've installed Fedora 13 x86_64 and am not able to hibernate (though suspend works fine). This is the case either with or without the proprietary Nvidia drivers from rpmfusion. When I click System -> Shut Down -> Hibernate, the screen just goes dark. Moving the mouse activates the display and the password confirmation box appears. Judging by the disk activity light, nothing is written to disk. Swap space is configured correctly.
Looking at the last few lines of /var/log/pm-suspend.log I see this:
It looks like grub (or the absence of grub.conf) is interfering. Problem is, I'm not even using Fedora's grub to boot the system. I'm dual booting with Ubuntu 8.04 and am using that grub. The section from that grub's menu.lst is:
But of course Ubuntu 8.04 is pre grub2 so how do I satisfy Fedora's grub.config without messing this up?
I installed ubuntu 9.10/9.04 on my usb key as live image couple of time. I have trouble when I try to install wine on my usb key. I am wondering what is the difference if I install my ubuntu into my usb key directly? will that be slower compared with live CD mode? I guess live CD mode may use memory as part of harddisk to save temepory files and normal usb linux installation won't do this for me. Is this true?
If so, do I have a choice to point my tmp directory to system memory area?
I'm using pm-hibernate, and would like to reboot the machine after it's done hibernating, rather than having the machine turn off.Is there a way to do this with pm-hibernate, or any other Linux hibernate thing?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI Installed Ubuntu 10.04 with Logical Volume Management last month and then upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and noticed that I have been loosing power faster than I have been used to. I have realized that I didn't have a hibernate option. I should be able to hibernate because I have over 5 GB LVM swap partition and only 2 GB of ram on my Laptop. How do I get the hibernate feature back?
EDIT the original installation was with encrypted home but I moved off of the encrypted home.
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 in my pc and for the last week I've been trying to enable hibernation in Windows 7. I have read more than 100 threads (and followed their instructions) with no result.
My configuration is:
hda: Windows 7
hdc: Ubuntu 10.10 (GRUB)
The BIOS is set to boot from hdc. When I select windows from GRUB, windows start up, but when I choose "hibernate" they just pop up the log in screen. However, when I set BIOS to boot from hda windows start (without GRUB) and DO hibernate when I choose to. BUT, when I switch on the pc (immediately after a successful windows hibernation) I get "Resuming Windows" regardless what disk I choose to boot from (using BIOS)!
I do not get the GRUB screen but I don't get the chance to launch the BBS popup either (I see the message but there is no response when I press F8 ). It seems like the system always boots from hda after a successful windows hibernation and there is nothing I can do to change this! On the other hand, Ubuntu always hibernates normally... I'm willing to post any information needed answers are not like "Repair Windows" or "Reinstall Ubuntu" because I want to solve the problem but find out its cause as well.
I installed hibernate by Code: sudo apt-get install hibernate . And it breaks the first time I use it. When I try to resume the system, it is just stuck there for at least 10 minutes with the ventilation fan spinning at maximum, after showing something like "successful resume" etc. That forced me to restart the computer and obviously there's a bug. So I remove it. The next time I restart my system, there's the following message: "resume: libgcrypt version: 1.4.4"
Although I can still enter the system, I'm quite uncomfortable with this message since it shows up every time. So I also removed uswsusp. Now everything returns to normal, But my question is, since I previously used hibernate, and the computer put everything into an img file for resume and stored it somewhere on the disk. I guess the img file hasn't been deleted and that's why I continue to see "resume: libgcrypt version: 1.4.4". Probably the computer detects some file and tries to resume using it, but fails, so it then restart a new session. Is it correct? and how can I find the file and delete it manually? When I run hibernate, I think I saw a message showing where the file is stored, but I don't remember where it was.

Why in expert mode does it look like Partitions 2 and 3 share the same sector / hd / Cylinders? Is this OK?

I've re-partitioned my existing windows xp disk to do a dual boot with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. The installation went fine and I am able to use both the operating systems just fine.
But when I boot into windows xp I donot have the hibernte/sleep options available anymore.
debug the issue and get back those options ?
Note: I have made the windows as default boot option in grub.
It was working in version 9, after I install the new one Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS, it can not wake up after hibernate and suspend. I am using Dell studio Desktop

I have a Dell M1530 but I don't really think it's a dell hardware issue because it's not just when I close the screen, it's also when I click suspend or hibernate from the menu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed lucid last week, and this morning installed some updates that appeared in update manager and then started having issues with permissions so I rebooted. Now when I try and log in I get the message Authentication Error Normally this wouldn't be a problem I would reboot again hit ESC just before loading Grub appeared and go into recovery mode and change the password for my master user. But I never get the chance to press ESC, and even I hold the key down from the time my BIOS flash screen is up, I never get the GRUB menu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having difficulty switching from GUI to console mode. I use ctrl-alt-f1 and the screen goes blank and I see a flashing cursor but I'm unable to do anything. I can switch back into GUI mode using ctrl-alt-f7. Also at times I see the word Ubuntu with 4 dots and 2 of them are orange if that's of any use. Like the initial boot loading screen.
I've tried going back to the default display drivers and that hasn't solved it. I'm using a CRT that's connected up to my display card via a VGA > DVI converter. *I've just checked and I can't get into recovery mode either
I used Ubuntu Tweak on ubuntu 10.10 and i don't remember what stupid thing i did. Now, my ubuntu never logs on, neither in recovery mode. I have attached the Camera Screenshot of the error screen. And i am a beginner, and it feels bad when my ubuntu doesn't work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have kubuntu 9.04 installed in my computer and I am normally using a Gnome environment desktop (though I get back to KDE or Xfce if I have any troubles with Gnome)
This afternoon I restarted my computer and since ever I am unable to log in. I press the on button, get to the partition page and select Ubuntu 9.04 and the computer shows the login page
however, once I type in my password, the computer tries to log in but then brings me back to the login page asking for the password again. I have tried to login as Xfce, Gnome, KDE, Failsafe mode and the result is the same. The only way to get through is to login through the terminal, but then I am unable to get back to the graphical mode.
I have a brand new Z97-PRO (Wifi/USB3.1 version) that I got to replace a Gryphon Z87, and it was working great for the first day. I had my Debian and Windows drives both working, and I was working on getting GRUB reinstalled on the Debian drive in no time. At some point I needed to restore my Windows MBR for the millionth time, but this time was different. The Windows logo popped up and froze there. I know this is a thing that sometimes happens, but every other time since I replaced my Gryphon this process only lasted seconds. I let it sit for hours and it didn't move.
I then tried my Debian live USB, which loaded into the main menu, but upon selecting rescue mode it black screened and hung. This was an issue I experienced when I first got the board, but it seemed to work itself out after a few reboots and remained flawless until it just came back. At this point, I'm unable to get in to any of my OSes and I can't seem to successfully boot any external media in order to fix it. My BIOS is totally stock save for secure boot, which is set to Other OS, and memory in XMP mode. I also tried using an Ubuntu Live USB, but ended up hanging with the exact same Q-Codes as in Debian. I am running the system on 1 stick of RAM while testing.
