I'm trying to format my main HDD and when I go to click format it says unable to format it says "Unable to format, device busy" I click details and it says "One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sda" I tried rebooting several times and no luck.
View 6 RepliesI am trying to create a multi-partition USB key to use to kick multiple OS's whenever I need (1 NTFS partition for Windows image and data storage, one ext3 for boot, another ext3 for Linux distros iso storage and the last one as a Fedora live usb with permanent storage).
I am using a Kingston Data Traveler G2 16GB usb key and I have absolutely no problem to create the partitions and all looks fine. The problem I encounter is that although I can format the 1st partition on the usd key to any fs I want, I am unable to do the same on the other partitions. I tried fdisk+mkfs.XXX (ext2, ext3, fat, vfat, ntfs) and gparted, and no luck.
mkfs.XXX gives me no errors when I run it but when I try to mount the partition in Fedora 14 the OS is unable detect the fs. Gparted allows me to format the fs, gives no errors, shows a format successful message, but when it re-scans the device the fs appears as unknown.
I know it is possible to do this as I had a DataTraveler 101 16GB and it was working fine until I lost it.
I have a 250gb External HD and wanted to format it using the disk utility but every time I try Ubuntu tells me that the drive is busy.
How is it busy? I have nothing opened and haven't used it in anyway other than plugging it in. It doesn't even tell me what's using it.

I tried to format with System>Administration>DiskUtility but it gives this error when I'm do: Error creating partition table: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sdb: Input/output error gParted was not even useful since it didn't not even detected the drive...
Isn't there any simple way to format the crap from the Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD? I believe that on windows, there wouldn't be that problem since the "format c:" crap just format the drive without asking questions. All I want to do is to format the drive so I can create partitions later. Also, I have only access to the live CD and I don't have any Diskette drive installed.. I believe we now live in a world where this crap isn't needed to fix a computer.
I have a pretty weird problem, which is that I can't format any partitions anymore.
It started when my laptop suddenly froze and I killed it (I just ran FF, IRC client, Kopete, ... and I think the last thing I did was plugging in a USB drive). When I wanted to boot the machine again it gave me a lot of errors that the root and the home partitions are both corrupted.
Repairing the system with the DVD didn't help at all and finally I removed all the partitions to reinstall the whole system.
During the installation it can create the partitions, but it can't format them with ext4.
I tried to format the partitions with a live CD and YaST Partioner and the same problem showed up code...
How do I reinstall cent OS 5.2 without formatting the partitions? for example: I've create several partitions (create custom layout) and OS is installed completed. But I have some application need to reinstall at "clean" OS. If I delete and create same partitions again it take long time to format the partitions. How do I just reinstall OS without formatting those partitions?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have windows XP now with 3 partitions (5gb *containing XP*, 35gb and 40gb). i have backed up my data and now want to install Ubuntu only (no XP). i also want to format my HDD and make 2 partitions (20gb and 60gb). My idea of doing this is that i will delete my 35gb and 40gb partition and then while installing Ubuntu i will be prompted about using the unallocated space and i will install Ubuntu on it and then delete the 5gb partition using GParted once Ubuntu is installed.

sda2 and sda3 are the Vista partitions. sda2 is a recovery partition and sda3 is the main partition. All data is safely copied from sda3 and now I want to reformat them for SUSE. I not bothered about partition resizing i.e. I am happy to just have the sda2/sda3 space available to SUSE and mount them somewhere.
1) Do I need to do anything about the boot table first or can I just reformat sda2 & sda3?
2) How should I format sda2/sda3? I'm guessing I need to unmount them and then format. Should I use ext4 or something else? Which command/tool should I use?
I'm still trying to find out if my coby mp3 player will actually play mtv video files as is advertised.
ffmpeg -formats does list mtv but the only command I really ever used was one to convert a vid to an mp3 so I tried Code: ffmpeg -i test.mp4 -acodec copy output.mtv it returns Code: Unable to find a suitable output format for 'output.mtv' I can't find any mtv files online for purchase or free for that matter, so I know this is all pretty obscure but shouldn't there be a way to convert them since ffmpeg lists mtv format?
All my music editing software programs say, "unable to open device /dev/dsp.Device or resource busy." How can I fix this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? (i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.

But I'm getting confused as the heads / sectors informations always differ every time I create a partition.I have WD Green 1.5TB disk. I want 2 partitions. sdb1 with 1.3TB and sdb2 with the remaining space. Here's how it looks like. When I create the first partition (1.3TB one), I get following listin with fdisk:

I have USB which is already not recognised windows and when I insert while ubuntu is on. It does recognise it. But does not allow me to mount, no matter through command line, or won't let me format it through disk utility.

The entry with Microsoft Corp. name is my Microsoft SideWinder mouse and second last I assume is my USB, as I have no other active USB connections.
I have a Dell mini 9 with a 16GB SSD. At one time I had Hackintoshed it to run OS X. Went back to original OS(Ubuntu 8.04 LTS). Had some issues installing 8.04, apparently MBR was lost, or corrupted, so had to re-install grub and was able to complete the install. The issue is under partition ed. it shows dev/sda1 flagged as boot, with a yellow triangle, file system unknown, size 23.5 MB. When you double click the partition it shows status as unmounted, reason 1. file system damaged, 2. file system unknown to gparted, 3. no file system available (unformated). So I decided to try to formate the partition with ext2, or ext3 it fails with no detailed info. as to why it has failed. There is also no swap partition showing up? why this partition seems to be untouchable? When you right click the partition the options are delete, format, and manage flags. I am afraid to delete partition as this is flagged with boot, and cannot format.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi recently bought a new pair of rams, after i installed them (removed the old ones) ubuntu started lagging and all my applications started normaly, after half a minute they didn't respond for 2 minutes and then back to normal again. So i decided to delete the ubuntu partition and re-install ubuntu. I begin the installation normaly but it stucks at 5% where the partitioning takes place.
I also tried gparted to create an ext3 and ext4 partitions but i had the same problem on both tries. I believe it is a ram problem, should i go and replace them, or there is a possible solution without replacing them? (Also run the memtest 86+ for 4 hours and there were no errors).

I placed some new partitions in my hard disk but have been unable to write the correct entry in fstab to get them to automount. I can see them in nautilus and manually mount and use them, but I get failures when I try to add them to fstab, unsure what I am doing wrongI mounted two new partitions, one ext4 and one ntfs formatted partions.The fstab file reads as follows

I am not able to see the video of a .flv format in VLC player. I tried it in the SMplayer also but of no use. I can hear the audio but no video on it. Just a black screen.
View 4 Replies View RelatedBelow is results from attempt at formatting my hard drive. As you can see a driver is installed, but not working. Perhaps something is missing? Seems a bit odd that a "unable to read" comes back when disk data is reported. The drive just went through a low level format. BTW this is a fiber channel drive. Also on board are 5 scsi drives. Adaptec raid card. Not sure if that would have any relevance, but there you are.

I emailed myself a video. I took with my ipod touch, and its in .mov format which ubuntu doesn't support. I have an app called arista transcoder (a little slow, but very handy), which, for some reason, isn't able to convert the video. its strange because I was able to convert a few other videos from my ipod (same format) into .avi files last week. Arista says something about an unrecognized media type.

I can't create any formatted partitions in my hdd (/dev/sda) with Gparted or KDE Partition Manager.
With either I can only create an unformatted partition. When trying to reformat it, I get this: [URL]

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 on a Sony Vaio. Because when I installed it I was new in Linux, I messed up with the partitions and I have lots of unused logical partitions in my extended one.
I have used Gparted to delete a number of partitions and create a new, bigger one (ext3, logical), within the Linux extended partition I have
well, first of all I do not understand why it created partitions that are not mounted, that is I can only access them typing my password and they got automatically unmounted as I restart the computer
but the worse is that I cannot write on it! I completely deleted the previous partitions but, when I open it, there is still a folder "lost and found" that I am not allowed to open (+_+) and when I drag anything into the window it says "error" that is I cannot write anything on an empty partition...
I was running Windows XP SP3 when one of my drives (or partitions) suddenly wasn't accessible. I booted into an old ubuntu Live CD I had (version 8.X) and tried mounting it. I could see the other partitions at this time. I rebooted the machine a couple of times (for normal reasons) and after a particular reboot none of my partitions were present! All seemed to have gone! I didn't do anything except mount the partition from Ubuntu Live CD. Made no write operations .

I originally had 6 partitions (including my primary). What do I make of the above screen and how do I proceed? Mot of testdisk documentation says "Choose the paritions to recover..." but I do not have a partition. What do I do to recover my data? I don't mind reformatting my entire HDD, but I need to get some jpegs and movie files off it first.
So I currently have an issue with the 10.10 (64-bit) installer in that it does not recognized the Crucial SSD drive I have installed on my box correctly (long story and ultimately a separate topic but if anyone is interested). Initially I thought it was an issue with the hardware and RMA'd the drive however now realize that the likely culprit is the Ubuntu installer itself.
In order to test the rest of the hardware while waiting for the RMA'd drive I installed Ubuntu on a separate partition on the box and thus have a working secondary partition that I can boot from. From within Ubuntu it seems I am able to access/format the SSD correctly (using gparted); it seems that it is only the installer that cannot handle the drive...
Is there a way that I can install Ubuntu on a second partition from within Ubuntu itself?
I can't edit the partitions in the install setup: I see a hard disk (sda) with no partitions or user devices, and 2 RAID devices.The behavior of OpenSuse 11.2 x64 installation is much alike.I have googled with every keyword combination I remembered, but I can't find anything that gives me a clue to what may be happening.I have already tried the 3 SATA configurations (the IDE that works with the installed Win 7, AHCI and RAID), but the result is always the same. Now the strangest thing is that in OpenSuse, fdisk and parted correctly identify the partitions. As far as I remember, parted isn't able to do modifications and fdisk says that the boundaries of the first, tiny partition, doesn't match the number of cylinders (or something like it). However, I was able create a partition with fdisk on the empty space and format it, delete it again and repeat the process a couple of times with no errors. The partituions are signed as msdos.
GParted from Ubuntu also shows the partitions, but I didn't try to do any modifications, namely because I don't think that it can solve my problem and I don't want to risk installing windows again.The hardware is brand new, a Asus M4A785Td-V Evo with an Amd Phenom II X4 965 and a WDC-WD5000ACCS-0 500 Gb HD. My lazyness made me asking the guys from whom I bought it to install Win7 Ultimate 64 in a NTFS partition, leaving half the disk untouched. They assure me that it is a "plain vanilla" ("next, next, next" installation . i installed F12, and trying to play mp3 and vedio files, Mplayer fails to play all type of vedio formet as awell as mp3. totom is already installes, as well as ibdvdcs... no use till now.

ive bought a new laptop, dell studio 17, and now ive wanted to install fedora 14 (64 bit), but after a few minutes the first problem appeard. Ive wanted to add the partitions and it always tells me that it "Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on disks."
the funny thing is this, that my hard disk has got 500GB memory space and 150GB is full

I think something has gone wrong with my attempt at setting up a new partition. I have two HDDs, initially one was divided into two partitions. I shrank the second partition using resize2fs from a live cd and am trying to create a third partition. I have been trying to follow this:[URL]
