How do I reinstall cent OS 5.2 without formatting the partitions? for example: I've create several partitions (create custom layout) and OS is installed completed. But I have some application need to reinstall at "clean" OS. If I delete and create same partitions again it take long time to format the partitions. How do I just reinstall OS without formatting those partitions?
View 1 RepliesReformatting two drives before re-installation. I'm new to Linux generally. Can someone give me instructions on formatting the hard drives? I have installed ubuntu on a machine that had been running Windows for a while. Since Windows worked the boot drive for years, I decided to switch the positions of the two drives; putting the old data drive into the boot position.
Apparently, ubunta was too smart for me. I guess it discovered the Windows installation, and decided that's where it should be installed too. Now, what I would like to do - and I would really like to do it this way - is reformat both the disks, wiping out everything that's on both of them; before running another installation.
BTW: the old data drive is still NTFS, and I don't want installations own both disks - reformatting and starting fresh seems nice and clean, if not entirely necessary.

I installed debian with Root, swap, /home, /usr, /tmp, /var on separate partitions. Then my root partition hdd is physically damaged, so I have to reinstall. But how can I keep/remount those other partitions which has lots of important data(mainly webserver data and mysql database) back? Another thing to note is that I not only replaced the root HDD but also the whole desktop pc which is smaller pc so instead of internally connecting the other partitions(another undamaged Harddrive), I have to use USB adapter externally which seems to work just fine. But how do I "re-link" my partitions?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Edgy on hda1, Mepis on hda2, and Hardy on hda 5 in extended part 4. Right now I can't back-up to any external drive because they won't mount. My file system on hda1 can't be checked ( i believe because of a bad UUID which I have not been able to resolve). I have been using hda1-edgy as my main system and mepis-hda2 as a back-up. But when I installed Hardy I lost my UUIDs. My resolve for this is to try to delete Hardy (hda5) leaving hda2 and hda1-edgy so that I might at least be able to mount a removable to backup hda1. then I'll reinstall edgy, Hardy...and so on until I get to something that is current. At least that's my plan thus far. But before I do any of this I need to find out where GRUB is loaded. It is not with hda1 but would like to put it there. (Is this what- Active- means in Gparted?) Any suggestions on how not to loose my current files on hda1-edgy while reinstalling?

I'm adding some new hardware (mobo and ram) and want to reinstall debian. I would like to keep my home and var partitions intact and just reinstall everything in root (/) partition.
I'm unsure of how to do this during the installation. Do i need to format? how do I tell it to use the /var and /home partitions?
I have a pretty weird problem, which is that I can't format any partitions anymore.
It started when my laptop suddenly froze and I killed it (I just ran FF, IRC client, Kopete, ... and I think the last thing I did was plugging in a USB drive). When I wanted to boot the machine again it gave me a lot of errors that the root and the home partitions are both corrupted.
Repairing the system with the DVD didn't help at all and finally I removed all the partitions to reinstall the whole system.
During the installation it can create the partitions, but it can't format them with ext4.
I tried to format the partitions with a live CD and YaST Partioner and the same problem showed up code...
I got a 40GB seagate HDD which has got through some unsuccessful windows and linux installations and now all the partition tables are corrupted... I tried to format with System>Administration>DiskUtility but it gives this error when I'm do: Error creating partition table: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sdb: Input/output error gParted was not even useful since it didn't not even detected the drive...
Isn't there any simple way to format the crap from the Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD? I believe that on windows, there wouldn't be that problem since the "format c:" crap just format the drive without asking questions. All I want to do is to format the drive so I can create partitions later. Also, I have only access to the live CD and I don't have any Diskette drive installed.. I believe we now live in a world where this crap isn't needed to fix a computer.
I'm trying to format my main HDD and when I go to click format it says unable to format it says "Unable to format, device busy" I click details and it says "One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sda" I tried rebooting several times and no luck.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have windows XP now with 3 partitions (5gb *containing XP*, 35gb and 40gb). i have backed up my data and now want to install Ubuntu only (no XP). i also want to format my HDD and make 2 partitions (20gb and 60gb). My idea of doing this is that i will delete my 35gb and 40gb partition and then while installing Ubuntu i will be prompted about using the unallocated space and i will install Ubuntu on it and then delete the 5gb partition using GParted once Ubuntu is installed.

sda2 and sda3 are the Vista partitions. sda2 is a recovery partition and sda3 is the main partition. All data is safely copied from sda3 and now I want to reformat them for SUSE. I not bothered about partition resizing i.e. I am happy to just have the sda2/sda3 space available to SUSE and mount them somewhere.
1) Do I need to do anything about the boot table first or can I just reformat sda2 & sda3?
2) How should I format sda2/sda3? I'm guessing I need to unmount them and then format. Should I use ext4 or something else? Which command/tool should I use?
I am trying to create a multi-partition USB key to use to kick multiple OS's whenever I need (1 NTFS partition for Windows image and data storage, one ext3 for boot, another ext3 for Linux distros iso storage and the last one as a Fedora live usb with permanent storage).
I am using a Kingston Data Traveler G2 16GB usb key and I have absolutely no problem to create the partitions and all looks fine. The problem I encounter is that although I can format the 1st partition on the usd key to any fs I want, I am unable to do the same on the other partitions. I tried fdisk+mkfs.XXX (ext2, ext3, fat, vfat, ntfs) and gparted, and no luck.
mkfs.XXX gives me no errors when I run it but when I try to mount the partition in Fedora 14 the OS is unable detect the fs. Gparted allows me to format the fs, gives no errors, shows a format successful message, but when it re-scans the device the fs appears as unknown.
I know it is possible to do this as I had a DataTraveler 101 16GB and it was working fine until I lost it.
I'm trying to install a dual booting machine with OpenSUSE v11.1 32bit and CentOS v5.2 64bit. I installed OpenSUSE first and allowed it to install and configure grub in the MBR and after that I wanted to proceed with CentOS v5.2. The installation went fine with two notable exceptions:- when I had to configure grub installation parameters, CentOS offered me only 2 solutions: either install it on the MBR of the first hard disk or not installing it at all. Other distributions are more flexible allowing you to install it in the boot sector of the root partition for example. Because I didn't want to ruin the existent grub onfiguration, I reluctantly accepted not to install it for CentOS assuming that I could manually configure the entry later in grub's menu.lst file.
- when I was presented with the options for software components installation, I've clicked on virtualization category/function because I intend to use the machine as a VMware host. There was no guidance on screen at that point and I blindly assumed that by choosing the virtualization function I would get necessary tools and drivers that will help me further on. It seems that this was a wrong move as you can see it below.
After completing the installation, I tried to search for a template or guiding on how the menu entry in menu.lst should look like but the grub directory was empty, not surprisingly because I've told CentOS earlier not to install it. Using the files in the /boot directory from the CentOS installation I tried to improvise a menu entry but it's not working. the recent versions of fdisk on Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 10.04 are supposed automatically to solve these things around 4k sector aligment thing if one starts fdisk with -u and -c flags. But I'm getting confused as the heads / sectors informations always differ every time I create a partition.I have WD Green 1.5TB disk. I want 2 partitions. sdb1 with 1.3TB and sdb2 with the remaining space. Here's how it looks like. When I create the first partition (1.3TB one), I get following listin with fdisk:

I wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? (i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have accidentally clobbered my root path /, but /boot and /usr and /home are okay. Silly me instead of doing a fsck I did a mkfs - arrgh!
/boot is on a separate partition and /, /usr, /home and swap are in a LVM I do have a backup of / on a separate machine which uses backuppc. getting ssh and rsync going first will be a priority. Luckily the machine is not a critical one as it only runs Oracle and mySQL...both databases are on /usr partition
My question is can I have the install only install the /boot and / parts but leave the /usr and /home alone?
I have a lot of problems with the server and I want to reinstall the Centos in order to have a clean system. The problem is that I have access only via ssh console (with putty aplication)

after the 5.4 upgrade I know longer have a X session. I can ssh in but no X whatsoever (monitor is blank).
I tried this once but my post disappeared. A thousand pardons if this is a dupe.Through the magic of typos, I managed to delete my ssh binary file. I can receive SSH connections but am unable to SSH into another computer.I located the RPM that looks to be what I'd want -- openssh-4.3p2-41.el5_5.1.i386.rpm -- but it refuses to install. RPM gives me the following conflicting messages:

Only allocate 8.8G for /root and the rest to /app/Current my kernel version is 2.6.28, which are latest than the CentOS release which is 2.6.18, I think. Someone compile the kernel for me because he said my laptop network card is not recognized in the 2.6.18 released. I am not sure how he did it. I am a bit worried because if I reinstall again, I will face the same problem that my network card is not recognized!.

Unfortunately the new motherboard is a rev 2.x board, which has a different onboard NIC (old one is RTL 8102E, new one is AR8132), so now my ethernet connection doesn't work anymore (no eth0 device), I assume I need to install a new driver for the AR8132? Just installed updates with the recent kernel update 11.3 for Centos 5.5. I have had guest additions running fine before that. I have a portable equipment with Linux (Centos 5), I am trying to format it everything to put Win xp and Centos 5.3; the detail is that when reinitiating the PC, the CD installer of xp start correctly with "Presses any key to initiate from CD" soon itself with "the install program it is inspecting the configuration of hardware of his equipment" until there all good.
BUT: Then it remains in black the screen and it does not do nothing else so as in some forums they suggest: I waited for almost 1 hour, I proved with several cds xp and these also I proved them in other readers giving ok, reviewed the bios, etc. and nothing, the peculiar thing is that if I place the CD install of Centos this one if it works and it installs in the portable one.
I recently installed opensuse 11.2 on my laptop which also had windows vista and windows 7, i created a new partition and the installation went smoothly, after i went to boot back into windows 7 i got a blue screen of death, strangely vista boots perfectly.I could just reinstall windows 7 but its a pain to reinstall all my programs and such

I have a CentOS 5.3 x86_64 system setup as a file server, backup server, and iSCSI target. The physical machine has six hard drives, two of which (bay0 and bay1) are 1TB disks in a RAID1 mirror. Therefore, CentOS is installed on /dev/sda. My question is this: how can I format and mount the large portion of sda that's not in use right now? Here's some more info:

As you can see I've got about 1TB of space on sda. However, when I look at my df -h command and my LVM management what I find is that I've got:
root / filesystem = 8GB and is under Vol00
swap = 2GB and is under Vol01
/var = 2GB and is under Vol02
Sounds like I have a ton of space on sda that I'm not using. It also looks like I'm using LVM, but I'm not familiar with LVM nor am I really comfortable with how I can use the rest of the 900+GB I have available on sda. how I can format and mount the rest of the free space on sda?
