Ubuntu :: USB Hard Drive Won't Load

Feb 12, 2011

I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 on my system. I then wanted to get rid of Windows 7 (which crashed and doesn't work) so I deleted the OS_Install partition that was on there. The tutorial I was reading told me to delete both Linux Swap partitions so I could take all the unallocated space and put it on one partition (/dev/sda2). So I did that. At first everything worked great, then I ran like 250 updates that were listed and now it won't load my 250GB external hard drive which has all my files on it that were backed up from Windows. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but my system won't boot with the drive pluged in and neither will my other Windows Vista system. My first though was that it wasn't being recognized but when I ran lsusb it said it was there.

Code:

root@caleb-A6200:/home/caleb# lsusb

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 13d3:5092 IMC Networks

Ubuntu :: Create A Hard Drive Image That Just Load Up?

Jun 23, 2011

I'm overall realitively new to Ubuntu 11.0.4 and I had some questions regarding this operating system. I just wanted to inform everyone, that I'm attempting to make a transition, from a life time Windows user and a current Windows 7 Ultimate user, to being a Ubuntu user.

I am becoming fedup with Windows 7, because i dislike how much system resources, it requires to run, and in addition I'm skeptical about Windows security. I had a lot of bad experiences with the Windows updates as well, so I was kind of alienated, as one can imagine. What I did like about Windows 7, is how easy it was, to configure the user group policies. I was wondering if you were able to do that in Ubuntu latest release.

I also was wondering, if it were possible, to create a hard drive image, that I can just load up, if I ever needed to reformat, like I did in Windows 7.

Hardware :: Hard Drive Doesn't Load Menu

Feb 24, 2011

I recently bumped the power cable on my debian server at home. The computer shutdown, and since then hasn't been feeling like going past grub. When I boot the computer it gets to the "Welcome to Grub!" screen, but doesn't load my menu. I booted into a live cd and the hard drive seems intact and accessible. I re-installed grub without any problems, but the same problem is happening. I tried running fsck, but it says that the "device or resource is busy while trying to open /dev/sda". I am kind of stumped and would prefer not to reinstall debian to get this box running.

Ubuntu :: Load Windows Partition Encase The External Hard Drive Fails?

May 14, 2010

I'm new to the ubuntu forums as well as ubuntu. I'm excited to learn more about linux itself as well as ubuntu. I got ubuntu 10.04 running on my toshiba L505D laptop by disabling acpi in the boot commands. My first question is how do i do this permanently, is this bad, and would updating fix the issue? If so how would I go about updating.

Secondly, when the external hard drive I installed ubuntu on is not plugged in to the laptop, GRUB rescue comes up. I kind of like this because it provides a level of hardware security. I would however like to know how to load my windows partition encase the external hard drive fails.

Debian Configuration :: Hard Drive 1 Wont Load - Gives Me A Fatal Error

May 14, 2011

My problem is that my debian in hard drive 1 wont load, gives me a fatal error.

This is my computer:
Hard drive 1 (1TB): broken debian 333gb, windows7 666GB (approximately)
Hard drive 2 (250GB): debian (working fine, im using it now).

Details: I tried to install some webcam software thing and I think somehow i deleted some system files... ...So now when I start my computer, grub loads and i choose Debian on hard drive 1,i click it but when it goes through the list of things, it says

FATAL ERROR /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/kernel/fs/fuse/fuse.ko: No such file or directory

And it just goes to a blank screen with a blinking cursor.

Now that's not all. I did something else wrong... I ran Gparted from a usb stick to create an extra partition on hard drive 1 because i was trying to install another linux on it or something so I can access my computer.

But, when I tried to shrink it and create an extra partition on the disk of about 150gb, it was taking so long and i read that it may take about 40 hours, so i turned it off after a few hours. So, I may have created more problems than my original problem.... I can still boot into Windows 7 though.

So now i have:
Hard drive 1 (1TB): broken debian about 120gb, windows7 666gb (approximately), free partition
Hard drive 2 (250GB): debian (working fine, im using it now).

Also, of interest: When I look at the folders of the messed up debian, there is nothing in the /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/kernel folder. Empty.

So basically. my problem is that I get the fatal error, and then maybe i create some extra problem by stopping the partitioning when it wasnt done. so please help me try to fix the fatal error first

Hardware :: External Maxtor Hard Drive Fails To Load Windows 7 And 10.04 Lucid

Jun 17, 2010

I have a Onetouch 4 mini 160GB I bought a year ago. I t used to work fine but all of a sudden it started to become a problem device. My home pc has two operating systems on it: Windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 lucid. the drive often fails to load on both systems. Sometimes it's recognized, but the reads are very slow and opening a folder on the drive takes around 120 seconds. Itried reformatting the whole drive, chicking it with chkdsk but it didn't help. Now I have around 70 GB of data on the drive. On my office pc I don't have such a problem and the drive works fine.

My home pc has an Asus P5B motherboard and intel core 2 duo cpu. I tried unplugging other usb devices, plugging in the extra power cord (data + data/power) and it didn't help. The drive also makes beeping sounds when I try to browes the files on it. I'm sure thid is not OS related as both Windows and Linux have the same issue. This is the output of dmesg | tail command on linux. You can see the os keeeps "resetting" the drive:

Ubuntu :: External Hard Drive - GParted Wont Load Up When Plugged In And Disk Utility Doesn't Show It

Feb 7, 2011

I had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.

General :: Move Smaller Hard Drive To Partition On A Larger Hard Drive?

Mar 16, 2010

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.

Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 On External Hard Drive Drive?

Jun 19, 2011

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
