Ubuntu :: USB HID Core Driver (slow After Trying Virtualbox 4)?

Sep 1, 2011

using 10.04.3 i have removed virtualbox 4 and return 3.1.6 it seems to have added ~5 seconds to my boot time (at least at the ubuntui plymouth splash screen) and i had it down to ~9 seconds before as a perfectionist it is getting under my nerves my guess it it left something to enable usb support in virtualbox here is part of my dmesg

Code:

Ubuntu :: WindowsXP Running Slow In VirtualBox

Apr 1, 2011

I have WindowsXP installed under VirtualBox. Most of the time this works fine, but sometimes when I boot it up, it runs so incredibly slowly that it is unusable. My only solution to this has been to copy out the important data, restore the vdi file from backup and reboot. This usually solves the problem until next time. "top" shows that vbox is taking 35% of the memory (which is the amount I have allocated) and about 102% of my dual core's CPU. Everything else is running OK at the time.

Ubuntu :: Extremely Slow Terminals In Virtualbox?

Mar 18, 2010

I'm running windows 7 on my laptop at work (I know, I know, but I have good reasons). In order to at least some of the benefit of Linux, I run Ubuntu in virtualbox. Things pretty much work great, except more often than not, gnome terminal is really sluggish. It seems like a simple program - I can get videos to play fine, why can't I type text. I installed xterm, and it has the same problem.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Slow Performance With Mutexes And MySql On Multi Core CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 965 - With 11.3

Nov 11, 2010

I have installed OpenSuse 11.3 32 Bit in a virtual machine on an older computer on a Windows XP host and on a new computer with AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor.

With sysbench I tested the performance of mutex and on the new computer it is 3 - 4 times slower than on the virtual machine. Other performance tests with sysbench for CPU, memory and threads are faster on new computer like expected. I tested this, because I have a slower performance of table creation in MySql tested with sql-bench, where creation of 10000 tables lasts 45 seconds on the virtual machine but over 400 seconds on the new computer.

I have tested with kernel-desktop and kernel-default but there are not large differences. File creation was tested with bonnie++ and is on newer computer faster as expected.

My questions are:
- Why is the mutex handling on the multi core CPU slower than in the virtual machine and how to speed up this?
- Or is there another reason why table creation of MySql is so much slower on multi core CPU?

Ubuntu :: Virtualbox Incredibly Slow - Scratchy And Unresponsive

Mar 18, 2010

Has anyone had any issues when they freshly install Windows XP in VirtualBox?

I just created a system in vBox with an AMD x4 925 2.8Ghz Quadcore Processor (with AMD Virtualization on). I gave the system 3 cores, 3GB of RAM, 128mb video memory, turned off all acceleration and gave it a 60GB virtual drive.

Following installation I have noticed the vbox is unusable. I click on the start menu for example and it takes 3-4 seconds to show up. Furthermore, just moving the mouse shows a frame rate at, what I would guess, around 5 frames/sec.

This is strange as I have given this machine very good specs.

General :: Windows XP Running As Guest On VirtualBox Is Very Slow

Aug 9, 2011

We had an old Windows XP server running a Filemaker database on a 2.6 GHz Intel CPU, but that server died. It's been replaced by a box with two 2.4 GHz Xeon CPUs and 5 GB of RAM that's running Ubuntu 11.04 natively, and Windows is running as a VirtualBox guest. 2GB of RAM has been dedicated to the Windows guest.Of course, these old Xeon CPUs don't have the VT-x extensions, so I wouldn't expect to be able to add CPUs to the VirtualBox guest, but the Filemaker database is running at least 2-3x slower than it did on the old server. I would expect that utilizing one 2.4GHz CPU out of four available shouldn't result in such an astounding difference.

I would also like to be able to continue using this setup, since it would also mean we'd be able to remove our Linux server from the rack, which is running on even slower hardware (not that the system requirements are high for its job though). So my question is: Why is this so slow? Is there anything I can do to change the situation? Or should I just give up now and find more suitable hardware?I understand that the "new" machine should be about 1% slower in theory, so please don't tell me this "should" be fine. I need more concrete answers (as in, "I've tried this before and you should do X") since in the real world, it appears to be about 50% slower. I'm about to blame "virtual" CPUs to multithreading on single core processors, and possibly the difference in CPU architecture between Xeon and Pentium 4 CPUs.

Ubuntu :: Update Of Libc And Xorg Core Kills Ati Hardware Driver

May 26, 2010

I got the weekly updates; libc files and an xorg core file from memory. Thinking now the xorg core possibly rewrote my xorg.conf!seems to have killed the restricted ATI driver. I can boot from kernel 2.6.24.26 but 27, the one I did the updates, after the Ubuntu progress bar I get a black screen. Booting from 26 I get the low resolution graphics guff and need to set it manually each time. Go to Sys->Admin->Hardware Drivers, and sure enough, the ATI driver is 'Not in Use'. Switch it on, try booting into 27, black screen.

Phew, back to 26, change to manual config, get back in, see ATI driver is off again, leave it off and leave manual graphics resolution and config, boot back into 27, everything is stretched and out of proportion!! But I can at least get in. Switch ATI driver on in there, reboot into 27, black screen. This is pretty urgent as my wife is end of semester uni stuff and needs this machine. Worse, so am I and have even more on the plate (but at least have a computer!),

And during the loading time the disk activity indicator light blinks indicating the harddisk is actually busy loading the system.

OpenSUSE :: VirtualBox Kernel Driver Not Installed?

Mar 23, 2010

when I open virtualbox OSE and tried to run a vm i get this error

Code:

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Re-setup the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. So i tried doing what it said and I got this error when i tried to run /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup (as root)

Code:

Stopping VirtualBox kernel module done
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel module, NOT. It has been packaged.Recompiling VirtualBox

[code]....

Then i ran dmesg and there was a ton of stuff that seemed to be unreleated so i ran dmesg -c to clear it. then i ran the vboxdrv this again then checked dmesg again expecting there to be nothing but the vboxdrv stuff but it was still blank.I really dont know what to do at this point I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that makes no difference

OpenSUSE :: Suse 11.3 VirtualBox 3.2.8 Kernel Driver Not Installed Error - 908

Oct 9, 2010

I can see this error occurring in multiple past versions of suse. The answer seems to involve recompiling the open source version of VBox, but this is surely overkill. Isn't there a way to either a)get the right kernel version of VBox for 11.3 or b)set whatever permissions are required.

In all the answer so far I can't see a solution I can understand for these combinations, sues 11.3 and VBox 3.2.8. The error is consistent, and if the install doesn't work properly (it took my a few attempts even to install it without error messages) then surely its an issue either for Oracle or Suse? It runs ok but hwen trying to fire up a newly created XP VM this error message occurs trying to switch from W764bit to suse11.3 64bit

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Video Driver - Games Very Slow

Feb 14, 2010

I'm having some problems with my video drivers I think. Before I get into detail here's some info about my laptop:
It's a Laptop, yes.
Graphics Card = ATI Mobility Radeon X2300
Model: ASUS F3KE (the 1 without the Camera, just a mic)
Ubuntu Version: 9.10

I believe the problem is with my Video Driver. I can Set Visual effects on high without any trouble, but when running games (Even Java Games) that I can run flawlessly when running under Vista are almost impossible to run on Ubuntu, extremely low FPS and well it's just pointless to even try!

Examples of games are:
Guild Wars running (Well not really *running*) with wine.
Saga with wine
Wurm Online (Java)
Alien Arena
And even Glest!

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.4 And Radeonhd Driver Slow Performances?

May 19, 2010

I have Dell Inspiron 6400 equipped with an ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 card and running Ubuntu 10.4. Before the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4 I was using the "generic" xserver-xorg-video-radeon, which was working fine but after the upgraded did NOT allow me to work in Dual Screen mode.

I then saw that there is a xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd driver which targets, among all, my X1400 card. I installed it and the Dual Screen now indeed works but I notice that my system is slower (actually, it stresses a lot the CPU) when I do things like scrolling a page in the browser, reducing/restoring a window, etc.. so I'm wondering if it isn't a driver or configuration issue in Xorg.

My xorg.conf (regeranted from scratch by the Xorg -configure):

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"

OpenSUSE :: Get Application To Utilize More Than One Core In Multi-core Setup?

I changed the bios so that the 6-cores were activated, but htop shows me that while the program is running, I am only getting activity on one core (the program maxes out the one core with consistent usage between 97% and 100%).

I have read that many programs are not written to take advantage of multiple core cpu's. However, I am just hoping that there is some way to get this program to take advantage of the extra cores. Does anyone know of a way to invoke programs from the command line which would spread the workload out among additional cores?
