Ubuntu :: URL's In Evolution Open New Empty Firefox Window?
May 2, 2011
I have a weird issue about url-handling: When I have an url in any application, and click it, firefox opens up in a NEW window, but does NOT open the url, instead the ubuntu-startpage...
This is totally against my settings: firefox is the default browser, and is set to open url's in a new tab. So, I have checked stuff in about:config, and even tried making an entire new profile. Checked evolutions settings, but too bad, nothing there.
Since I upgraded my browser to Firefox 3.6, I've been experiencing this problem: when I click on a link in an email, Firefox doesn't go to that link. Instead, a new instance of Firefox is started (even if I've already got an instance of Firefox running), and that instance just opens my homepage. Of course I can work around this problem by right-clicking on the link, selecting Copy Link Location, then manually pasting the URL into Firefox. But I'd prefer to use just one click rather than 6.I'm using the latest official Hardy version of Evolution (2.22.3.1), and I've got Firefox 3.6 set as preferred browser (or "default browser" or whatever it's called in Ubuntu).
Have been trying to resolve this problem for hours using;
However on-click email link I get;
I am at a loss to get this working. I used thunderbird before with no issues, but needed a microsoft-exchange email server for my work account, supported by evolution.
At work, I use MS Outlook 2007 via CrossOver (Wine). All of my links from Outlook (and probably all other crossover apps) open a new Firefox window instead of a new tab in Firefox. Links in native apps do not work this way.
After finding firefox too slow, i recently shifted full time to chromium. and now i know why it has such a fan following ! its seriously fast, especially as compared to firefox - which at least in my case would appear to have got bogged down because of numerous add-ons etc.
However, there are 2 things that disturb the basic functional of chromium.
- Whenever i click on the browser icon, the window that opens up is never in "maximized" size. so every time i need to double click on the title border to maximize the window. is there some way in which the browser window will open in maximized mode the first time i click the icon ?
- Firefox wouid readily open pdf files within the browser window itself. however, chromium asks me to first save the file at some location, and then only can i open it !
Evolution 2.28.3 on Ubuntu 10.04 won't empty trash on exit even though this is specified in preferences. Neither will it expunge with right click on trash -> empty trash..e.Close Evolution and open your file browser. Go to /home/put-your-ubuntu-login-name-here/.evolution/mail/localThere are 2 files (Junk.cmeta and Trash.cmeta). I deleted the Trash.cmeta file and opened Evolution again. When you reopen Evolution, it creates a new Trash.cmeta file.
I am struggling to figure out why I cannot get Ubuntu to install. I boot my machine and run LiveCD and I can see me 36G raptor in GParted or partitioner or under Places but when i try to install 9.1, there is no drive after the keyboard layout in partitioner. Can anyone please shed some light on this. I have changed sata ports but that didnt help either. I don't understand how it would be a driver issue if I can see the drive and partition it.
I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).
My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.
I downloaded and used usb to try ubuntu.I found I then cannot open Windows XP now.I read that you can change the start order in the grub file but when I typed in the terminal sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst the grub file only has grubenv in it 1kb? Any thoughts on why this is so?
I have installed dwm as window manager and whenever I start firefox it crashes after a few seconds. When I use the gnome window manager everything works fine.Anyone has a hint for me what I can do?

I've using RedHat/Fedora for years now, and every now and then I encounter the following situation :
I open a folder and it's empty. The folder was containing files and I'm 100% sure I didn't deleted them myself. Each time the folder is deep inside the hierarchy and is among other untouched folders. Sometimes it's a folder I never use, sometimes it's a folder I use almost everyday. The missing content is not large (a few regular files).
I'm currently running F13 but I've seen this behavior before on previous versions. This is kind of scary all my work is there and my backups are also done on a a linux backup server.
I'm puzzled, I cannot see any specificities to these folders, I had no crash or cold reboot, nothing I see can explain that. Could it be related to ext3?

When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:
"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:
Unknown User
Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem. Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...

I installed the add-on Greasemonkey for Firefox and since then firefox won't open. If I try to open it on safe mode nothing comes up, it I try it a secont time it tells me that Firefox is already running and if I try to open it normally it shows it on the bottom as if it was opening and then it dissapears.
Upgraded from Karmic to Lucid today (called myself giving someone else an opportunity to find the bugs). anyway... Firefox 3.63 opens pinned to the upper left of the screen in restored configuration. The window will not maximize. There is no title bar. There is no close/maximize/minimize button bar. Additionally Evolution window can be moved, but will not resize/maximize. There is no title bar/close/maximize/minimize buttons on Evolution
I prefer chrome and now want to delete FF all together, under U software center there is no menu to delete FF. Is there another way to this without messing up?
I see Evolution on the menu that is installed by default. I don't use and want to delete, but only choice in the U software center is to "install". I sense this maybe a bug, is there a manual way without messing up?
I installed Evolution email. Mostly it seems to work fine. But when I click on a URL link in an email I get the error message: Could not open link - no application is registered as handling this file"
Is there a fix for this? Also since I'm new to these forum is there a guide for how best to use them? Is there a way to mark posts as solved or unresolved, etc? For example I searched to see if this error message came up before in the forums and I didn't see anything. So maybe I didn't do it correctly? How do I edit a post after I've already submitted it?
Evolution error "No application is registered as handling this file" when clicking a link in a email in kubuntu 11.04. Must copy and paste link in web browser (firefox).
Suddenly I can't open some of my evolution address books. I get this error message :
Unable to open address book
This address book cannot be opened. This either means that an incorrect URI was entered, or the server is unreachable.
Detailed error message: Invalid source
This doesn't happens with 3 out of 5 address books. All the books in question are on my computer. My ubuntuone and google address books work fine. I've looked around for answers, but most of the issues seem to be related to the ubuntuone book, which is working fine for me.
This is odd - I just installed Fedora 13 onto a clean disk, but I restored some folders from backup to my home directory.
Afterwards I noticed that double clicking on a date on the calendar does not open evolution's calendar. I uninstalled evolution* , removed .evolution folder, and re-installed the 3 pieces.
Still nothing.. I double click a date, it does not pop up.
I see that it's running tho..
# ps ax|grep evo 2240 ? S 0:00 evolution-alarm-notify 21839 ? Sl 0:00 evolution calendar:///?startdate=20100613T210000Z
how to debug and or fix this? PS - nothing in /var/log/messages Hmm when I click on a date, I see this in .xsession-errors:
(nautilus:18928): Nautilus-GDU-WARNING **: unable to query info: The specified location is not supported (nautilus:18928): Nautilus-GDU-WARNING **: unable to query info: The specified location is not supported
As of this morning I cannot open pdf's by clicking on them in firefox. I can download them and open them from the download window or even from the folder they are saved to, but not from the browser. Evince opens and says: Unable to open document Error opening file: No such file or directory.
I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday. When I see the network tab, it shows it is connected to the web via eth0. I could download all the packages for updates. But when I try to connect to internet via Firefox, or by evolution or other software,I am unable to connect. The configuration of the ethernet card is proper as I checked that via terminal window. It is a peculiar problem, where I can download update pakages but unable to connect via browser or email client.when I ping to ubuntu.com is shows it is healthy and successful.I have a Acer dual core laptop, and connect to internet via wired lan .
When checking emails, many will be notifications from forum threads or other internet links. I have noticed it is very inconsistent in the way it opens them. Sometimes the browser will stay in the background so I can keep reading the emails and keep clicking on the links for reading in the browser afterwards. Other times the browser will jump to the front with every link so I have to keep switching back to Evo.
And other times it's a mix of both, seems completely random.
In Fedora 12 when ever I log into my desktop Firefox and Evolution are in off line mode when I run them.
I do not use NetworkManager and this is turn off (both service and icon) as this machine has mutable nailed up connections. I am guessing this is what it is as I have laptop with F12 on that has NM turned on and I am not seeing this behaviour.
How to change this behaviour? I is a tad annoying F11 didn't do this.
So, I get e-mails from both POP3 and IMAP servers on my Evolution service but what bugs me is that I cannot open any links within the e-mails on a browser window when I click on them (like would normally happen when I go to my accounts individually on the internet). Is it because I use Firefox or a bug in Evolution?
