View 3 RepliesUsually I open 5 terminals. And since each of those 5 terminals prints it's tile as: "username@username-laptop: ~" It becomes very hard to see what is what. So, I would like my terminal to always change it's title automatically to the program that I am currently using.
So, if I type "irssi", the title of my gnome-terminal-window, should change to: "irssi" for example.
do anyone know a quick way to inhibit/hide GTK warning, info and debugging messages when running GTK+/Gnome applications from terminal?I means those boring messages like "Gtk-WARNING blablabla..." and similar ones.
View 1 Replies View RelatedLinux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"
In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.
P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!
I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.
My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.
My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.
I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc
And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.
No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.
I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.
I would like to hear about a (telnet) terminal for Linux that can run VB scripts. The need is for configuration of a target board. I like secureCRT very much, but I can not use it from a Linux workstation.

Compiz is no longer starting and there is this red minus icon on my bar saying there is a package error. It said to run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" but when I ran that I got: dpkg: failed to open package info file `/var/lib/dpkg/status' for reading: No such file or directory"

And it will tell me which desktop my terminal is connected to ( per [URL])
How can I determine what desktop number the current gnome terminal in a gnome session is connected to?
I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
I don't actually have Ubuntu installed to my hard drive yet, I'm still playing with it on the demo CD. I'm new to linux, but the terminal is very familiar to me (iPhone jailbreaker).
Thing is, Terminal is giving me the finger anytime it can. I've yet to successfully do something on it. Simple things like "dpkg" or "cd any directory at all" are being a pain, and I can't put anything in /user/.Is this cause I'm booting it using a "demo CD", or does my computer just hate Ubuntu and I should give up now?

Anyway, I have been trying to find how to get it to work on Ubuntu instead of Mint. It is nowhere to be found on Gnome-Look and I've tried to search everywhere for it. Also, I've tried just copying the folder from /usr/share/themes but I just get errors even when running Nautilus under gksudo.

We have an old server running, and I decided to run fsck.ext3 -n on the disk to check it (while it was running). Turns out it reports lots of errors - not a good thing.
The weird thing is that when booting up a rescue cd and running fsck.ext3 on it, it says there are no problems with it. The filesystem is marked clean. Forcing a check with -f turns up nothing.
Now, when booting it from disk, fsck complains about an unclean file system that has not been checked for like 50000 days (obviously an error). Running e2fsck -n /dev/sda2 turns up errors again - not necessarily the same ones as the last time.
This makes me wonder: Can running e2fsck on a mounted file system cause errors? I ran with -n which is not supposed to do anything, just doing a read-only check. On the other hand, I heard checking a live file system might throw erros since the files being checked might change while bign checked, thus causing false positives.
Can the old version of e2fstools (1.38, approx 2005) mean non-existing errors are shown? Both the rescue cd and the system use this version.
In any case - why would the file system report errors on boot-up when the rescue cd just said it was ok? It should have been marked clean by now.
For laughs, I shut down the system and booted Knoppix which has a quite recent version (1.41.12, May 2010) of e2fstools. It showed no errors on the file system.
What do you think - are there errors or not on the file system?
The system is actually running Suse, but this is not about Suse specific things - just general Linux tools. And I use Ubuntu personally.

I have been running 10.4 with no problems for some time now. Today when I booted up it started checking the drive for errors, and I just left it to do its thing. I came back to this warning screen: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly.
I've tried all of these with no luck. When I select to run to low graphics mode, it says "Stand by one minute while the display restarts...OK".I select OK and then it gets stuck checking for battery state.I try to reconfigure the graphics, and nothing happens when I select any of the options on the next screen.
I've just tried running an upgrade and I'm getting lots of errors. Anyone having the same problem or know a fix/workaround

This is the story of my struggles and my thread of cries for help: I was booting after installing an update for Maverick Meerkat, and I got a message during the load screen that said: INSTALLATION PROBLEM: The configuration defaults for Gnome Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please Contact your system administrator.
So I dropped into GRUB During my 5th boot (while trying to boot once more in hopes it was just a boot error) and I selected the latest/updated version of Ubuntu, but I dropped into the recovery mode version so I could attempt some commands to try and fix it. Then, I dropped into the root terminal to attempt more commands to avoid specifying my networking device, and typing sudo before the commands. I got on my alternate computer and searched my problem. I installed a whole bunch of crappy commands that didn't do anything, and ended up purging GNOME completely and doing:

Now that I have fixed the issue, the experimentation trying to fix the error has caused two minor problems with Gnome? View 1 Replies View RelatedIn process of installing gnome have hit an error wall from dpkg too many errors. Tried increasing the allowed errors in dpkg.cfg to 150 and still get the errors. The errors now come up on any apt-get install.
ADDED: sent the output to file and the errors start with python2.5-minimal(2,5,43).
