i have 2 error messages while loading ubuntu 10.10:
i) VGA=788 is deprecated. Use gfxpayload = 800x600x16, 800x600 before linux command instead
ii)An error occurred while mounting /media/sdb1. Press S to skip.....
For (i) error I tried changing parameters in Startup-Manager but it still persists.Error (ii) is a result of my fiddling with fstab, psydm to auto mount drives on start up which eventually i solved through autofs however the error message is still coming.
I installed Vista in VirtualBox 2 days ago and all has been well since. However I just started VB tonight and although it started up ok, when I clicked on Start (Vista) I get the following pop-ups. Although one of the errors appears to say what I should do, I don't understand it Could somebody tell me what I need to do to fix it please? Preferably in English
Whenever I try opening the Gnome Activity Journal from Applications > Accessories > Gnome Activity Journal, it doesn't open, nothing shows up, and not even in the System Monitor. So I took a different route, by opening it from the Terminal, to see if it gave me anything, and when I type in 'gnome-activity-journal' it spits this out at me:
I have a server that, due to the amount of data it's moving, tends to trash up the hard drive when I have a power outage or crash. It doesn't have a keyboard or monitor attached to it normally so it's a real pain when I have to boot it back up. I have to hook one up just to hit F to have it fix all the errors. Is there a way to have it do this automatically on boot rather then having to confirm it?
An error accoured during the root filesystem check.
Installed fresh Slack 13.0 version, at 7GB virtual hdd, with cfdisk, created two primary partitions, 500 mb for swap, whats left, to second partition, made it bootable, installed full software package, used all default selections, only refused to configure network. At first restart, I got a screen with many statements, that looks like errors, and a last one, that looks like critical error. An image I have been working on Windows my whole life and only worked with already installed linux systems a bit. Installed RedHat and FreeBSD on VirtualPC previously and succesfully. Now, I stumble upon this error and cant think of next step.
I've added httpd to runlevels 2-5 using chkconfig, and also double checked it using ntsysv, but it still won't run on startup, even though it works just fine when started manually (using "sudo service httpd start").The results of "chkconfig --list httpd" show it is on for levels 2-5, and I've confirmed the current runlevel to be 3. I've found no errors in the logs (neither Apache's nor the system's), but maybe I'm looking at them wrong...My machine is a VPS (on VMWare) running CentOS 5.5 32bit. For additional information, see the output of getinfo.sh: http://pastebin.centos.org/35570I would greatly appreciate help on this, as it is delaying our NGO from moving servers.
I am running Valgrind on my program. It shows me two errors but mentions only addresses against them and not actual code even on a debug build.
The output is

I just upgraded to the 10.04 and everything works just fine as before (except for skype but that really doesn't matters as it has already been 3 years I'm using ubuntu and I managed to get it to work only once, for miracle I believe ^^). The only real issue I have is this: when I start up my laptop, after the log-in, no sound will be heared as the "speaker" volume level in alsamixer is set to 0; if I raise it from the terminal running alsamixer (as I don't know any other alternative) everything plays just fine, but the next time I boot I do have to do it all over again... So, how can I change the default startup level of the "speaker" in alsamixer?
PS: by the way I do have the very same issue with the screen luminosity but the other way round as is always starts at maximum brightness and I can't manage to get it to start at the minimum, as it did before. At least reducing the backlight if far more quick but a couple of times I forget it and the battery lasted something like half an hour
For starters: I need to get my printers working. Sys>Admin>Printing. Only once in the past few days was I able to enter my printers. When 10.04 let me, I thought it would remember, but the next time I turned on the PC, no printers.
When I go to: Sys>Admin>Printing> "add new" is blanked out...There is no way to add them again. "Connect" to localhost (these are SAMBA Printers BTW) "CUPS Server Error" is the message I get 'failed to connect to server'
I clicked "Safely remove hardware" (not sure if it's right - using Russian version..). It's right above Properties (right-clicking on the disk in Computer). So, I want to get it back. How do I do that? Also, how do I check the SD for errors?
This is a new installation of Ubuntu, everything was working great after installing the programs and configuring settings until a system restart brought these errors down:It cannot connect to the internet, I've tried everything even restarting the network with the terminalThe windows do not have borders, I know this is a common problem but I've read through many different posts and nothing helps, this all happened at the exact same time and was working perfectly beforeWhen you logoff, shutdown, or end your session in any way it says there is an unknown program that won't quit, you have to end it because it will never end on it's own.I've restarted many times in the past but all this suddenly happens randomly, I have Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit and CompizFusion if that makes a difference.
Last night I attempted to install the PulseAudio Equalizer. It appears that i followed some old instructions, because the repository does not seem to exist.

How do I remove this bunk PPA? It's blocking my ability to update my software, etc.
When I installed Ubuntu 11.04 i went to some blogs to do the classics "10 things to do after installing Ubuntu 11.04". It seems all is fine. But when i do this command in the terminal,
Quote:
sudo apt-get update
I get this errors ("imposible obtener"="can't get", i think this is the translation) in the terminal:

1. I've binded compiz' "scale - initiate window picker" to the top right corner. But it just seems to stop working randomly until I restart my pc. Why does this happen?
2. Scale - "initiate windows picker for windows group" doesn't seem to work at all? For example I open two firefox windows, touch the keys I've set up (super + c) but nothing happens?
I have a package on my system that has a missing dependency and I would like to install another piece of software via apt-get with out having to remove my software that is missing a dependency... Can I force it install the other package with out first running apt-get -f install?
I am having some trouble installing from both the now legacy "add/remove applications" and the ubuntu software center.
The add/remove applications gives me an error, The ubuntu software center, does not. It just stalls, and takes forever at doing, what I can imagine, nothing. It does however most of the times install what i am asking it to do.
What might cause this? I am having some trouble sometimes at connecting to repositories.
Oh yeah, ubuntu software center, just does not let me click install...
I want to backup my Ubuntu box and I found a couple very helpful articles that describe how to use tar for backup and restore. So far so good. I've dabbled in Lin/Unix in the past, mainly on work systems, but Linux on my personal PC is new to me.
When I ran the tar command as root (su -) I noticed several errors scrolling by in the window. It's scrolling too fast to note the exact errors, but I did notice "permission denied" a few times.
Is there some way that I can capture the output of the tar command to a file so I can review it for errors and/or permission denied statements?
Can I just add some arguments to tar?
tar cvpzf backup.tgz --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/backup.tgz --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/sys /
firefox turned to Namoroka web browser and now constantly freezes after i close it and i have to close it in the system monitor to make it work my AWN has been going crazy and had to turn compiz off i have a quad core with 8 gigs of ram its a relatively new clean install of ubuntu karmic koala... and the errors started to occur after updating everything after install?
I'm having two distinct Grub boot errors with Ubuntu 9.10, stemming from two different setups. Anticipating that I'll be asked I ran BootInfoScript on both setups. This is the first setup, where I put a Flash ROM card in the Flash ROM port in front of the computer. This setup will not boot at all, and I get a message something like "Insert appropriate media and try again."
I ran an update recently. It was about a 300Mb download and with it was the current kernel and others. I restarted to find an error. Compiz is no longer starting and there is this red minus icon on my bar saying there is a package error. It said to run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" but when I ran that I got: dpkg: failed to open package info file `/var/lib/dpkg/status' for reading: No such file or directory"
I'm trying to restore a corrupt windows disk. When I try to copy the user's folder, the huge amount of errors exceeds the terminal's buffer and are lost. I would like to send cp errors to a file so that I have a list of the corrupt files. (hopefully the user will decide they are not important)
i use the dd command to regularly backup my windows partition. basically i do:
PHP Code: sudo dd if=/dev/sda1 of=./Backupfile.bin bs=100MB form a USB HDD..
this works charms for backup and restore even over a remote shell.. i have even been able to remotely repair my system from vacation. now comes the problem: the partition has developed some I/O errors. Windows has notices and just marked some sectors as being broken/bad. But dd being Filesystem independent doesnt know and aborts when trying to read and getting an HArdware IO error.
my question: how can i fix this so i can still backup AND restore the partition? i cant afford a new HD at the time.
