I have a server that, due to the amount of data it's moving, tends to trash up the hard drive when I have a power outage or crash. It doesn't have a keyboard or monitor attached to it normally so it's a real pain when I have to boot it back up. I have to hook one up just to hit F to have it fix all the errors. Is there a way to have it do this automatically on boot rather then having to confirm it?

Whenever I try opening the Gnome Activity Journal from Applications > Accessories > Gnome Activity Journal, it doesn't open, nothing shows up, and not even in the System Monitor. So I took a different route, by opening it from the Terminal, to see if it gave me anything, and when I type in 'gnome-activity-journal' it spits this out at me:

I just installed Fedora and it worked for a few reboots. I am getting the following errors on startup:

I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. Instead I rebooted.The hard disk with the problem is:

Installed fresh Slack 13.0 version, at 7GB virtual hdd, with cfdisk, created two primary partitions, 500 mb for swap, whats left, to second partition, made it bootable, installed full software package, used all default selections, only refused to configure network. At first restart, I got a screen with many statements, that looks like errors, and a last one, that looks like critical error.
An image I have been working on Windows my whole life and only worked with already installed linux systems a bit. Installed RedHat and FreeBSD on VirtualPC previously and succesfully. Now, I stumble upon this error and cant think of next step.
I've added httpd to runlevels 2-5 using chkconfig, and also double checked it using ntsysv, but it still won't run on startup, even though it works just fine when started manually (using "sudo service httpd start").The results of "chkconfig --list httpd" show it is on for levels 2-5, and I've confirmed the current runlevel to be 3. I've found no errors in the logs (neither Apache's nor the system's), but maybe I'm looking at them wrong...My machine is a VPS (on VMWare) running CentOS 5.5 32bit. View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running ubuntu 10.10 64bit. My problem started occurring a couple days ago. When I check my disk space using either disk usage analyzer or Gparted it says I have about 69 gigs left. But say I am in a folder on the bottom of the window it will tell me I only have 48 gigs. And just to test I tried going over the amount specified in the folder window and it tells me I have insufficient space.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an SiI hardware SATA RAID card, with two 500GB disks in mirrored RAID configuration. When I first plugged them in and set it up, things seemed to work ok, but on boot the raid controller told me that the RAID needed rebuilding, and it would happen automatically after POST. So I didn't worry about it, and the drive mounted fine, and it's been that way for years. I just went in and manually on-line rebuilt the RAID in the controller's BIOS, and now when I boot into Ubuntu, both disks show up in fdisk, but neither show up in /dev/disk/by-uuid. Am I missing something?

This had happened once before but that time, I found nothing wrong on booting into ubuntu. However, this time, the scan doesn't seem to progress any further after detecting the error. View 7 Replies View RelatedOn my FC11 installation Palimpset Disk Utility icon in the top menu bar is reporting that I have a disk failure with the caption "one or more disks is failing".When I open up the details section in Pilimpset I can see that "2 sectors are failing",I have checked this with gparted checking facility and it reports that the disk is OK.What I would like to do is to check the disk using a command like tool or ofline tool, which would then tell me where those bad sectors are on that partition so that I can resize it (using gparted) and have the bad sectors in NON ALLOCATED DISK SPACE.

I can not post the link yet since I am new but it is in the Ubuntu section of this forum and titled "Hibernate or spin down or hard shutdown causes errors." I am running Ubuntu 10.4 64bit on an AMD64 2.2gh.
I have been doing my research about distros and know a bit about what is going on with Linux. Sort of transcending past newbie I think. But I want to know what is the most stable distro for the least amount of Disk errors, or how to get ubuntu not to have so many errors. Maybe install the 32bit version? I want something fast and simple where I can run gimp/inkscape/openoffice/and maybe some of the video editing packages like Kino/piviti/cinerella.
Need to know if there are any known errors allocating disk space using rsync. I have recently setup a small file backup server (2 500GB drives) running Centos 5.2, with a rsync daemon (via xinetd). However I have noticed that after about a week of usage, if I reboot, then the disk that rsync uses, has a lot of multiply claimed blocks and inode errors, such that I have to run fsck multiple times to fix. This has happened a couple of times now so I don't think that its random.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis utility doesn't work it won't format and won't boot the one time I got it working. Now it has broken my usb flash drive as gparted won't format it to anything . I tried the alternate unetbootin program and now it won't see the flash drive because the startup program trashed it. I still think the external usb devices is the most frustrating part of ubuntu and needs serious fixing. My new netbook install won't see any of my external drives.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 1 tb external hard drive and I was trying to put a windows.iso on it with startup disk creator but everytime I would select the windows iso it wouldn't show up.
Some background:
- the disk images are from the reboot disks that came with my labtop
- I do not have access to windows
Edits:
Using gparted, I turned my external hard drive into a bootable and put both ISO disc on it. Once I plugged it in my labtop and turned my labtop on, I get an error messages that says "BOOTMGR is missing".
- I ripped the both ISO images from the 2 system recovery disc that I ordered from HP specially for my brand of laptop.
- My CD-ROM drive does not work, or else I would have just used the disc regularly
- The operating system currently on the labtop is Ubuntu 10.04
i am trying to make it so that my laptop that has crashed can run Ubuntu. It lacks an optical drive (CD Player) so i am trying to use a USB. After i downloaded the ISO, and then use the extractor like it says here I then went into the flash drive, went to [usb-creator.exe] The problem is that when i try to do this (make the USB the Startup disk) the iso refuses to load on the application, its hard to explain, but here's a picture. Even when i go to click other, browse for the ISO, and open that one, it still doesn't work.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a set of rather unusual problems on installing a new 500Gb hard drive on my F14 system, I've solved them, but they were that unusual that I thought I should share them in case anyone else gets the same thing! I'd been experiencing intermittent faults on one of my drives, (lock ups for no reason, occasional boot ups that failed due to ' disk unreadable errors' and other odd errors). I assumed that the drive was failing, but it always showed 'Heathy' on disk utility! This was the disk with the OS on, plus my main 'data' disk had some bad sectors, so I thought I'd buy a nice big 500Gb and reinstall the whole system.
I backed up all my data to an external 'USB' drive, opened the case, (a big old under the table 'desktop', why do they still call them 'desktops'?) shoved in the new SATA drive and rebooted, intending to format the new drive to EXT4 and partitioning it before installing F14 again! OOOOOOOOOW! Major drive failure, missing OS, whole list of SDB errors! Control D, to reboot, BIOS only sees one drive; SDA (I have three, two IDE and one SATA) plus the one I just put in makes four. I go into BIOS and discover that it not only cant see any of the other drives, but my two DVD drives are missing too!
Now I've been building my own systems and mucking about with computers since before you could buy them, and Ive never seen a problem like this one! At first I thought the new drive had screwed my system, for on removal, the problem persisted! Then I noticed that the IDE connector in drive SDB, (the long 40 pin job) was just slightly out of line with the back of the drive, pushed it firmly in and what do you know, everything works! We moved recently and I think the vibration was enough to loosen the connector to give intermittent faults, and pulling the cables about to get the new drive in, pulled it out further......
The program damage my external hard disk brand Western Digital of 1 TB and 3 partition of that disk. I'm deeply sad and hopeless... googling a little bit I found that this is and old problem, was my first try. I have a lot, of very important information, I don't even know if is this the right group on this forum to put my question.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was attempting to create a bootable usb drive for a friend with Startup Disk Creator. I was certain I had selected the correct drive but apparently I had not, because when I clicked "format" it began to format sdb instead of sdc. Unfortunately, sdb was my external hard drive. In a panic i force quit the format window, as i couldn't see any other option.
Now, when i access my external hard drive all I see is 4 files with jibberish titles full of random symbols. When I right click the external drive it still says its ~70% full of data, so i guess everything is still there.. whether or not it is salvageable is the question. Is there anything to be done or is it beyond repair?
I have downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" Minimal CD. I would like to use the Startup Disk Creator to put it on bootable USB. when I run the Startup Disk Creator and click on "other" to select the downloaded .iso, my selection is ignored and does not show in the "Source disc" list of the dialog box.Is there another way to create a startup USB from the minimal CD download?

I'm trying to use USB Startup Disk Creator. The problem is I can't find it! I mean it is installed on my system, the Software Centre shows that but it doesn't appear in Applications>Accessories or anywhere else I can see. So where the heck is it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make a live USB of openSUSE from the 'startup disk creator' in Ubuntu. I wanna try it and see what it's like. As well as Fedora and gOS. As soon as the downloads for Fedora and gOS finish I'll try making the startup disk with 'startup disk creator' for each of those. But my problem is that I tried openSUSE and I select the .iso and it doesn't do anything.... I would imagine it should work with any old .iso, right? Or no? View 4 Replies View RelatedI have this problem across all my computers running Ubuntu (Lucid and Maverick installations). It works sometimes but it's hit and miss. Sometimes it will load up an iso no problem and i have a start up flash stick in no length of time. Other time's it will not load up an iso. I have tried formatting my flash drive these times but it doesn't make a difference as the drive is always recognised by the program yet i sometimes can't load an iso. When this happens i find that i generally have the same problem at the same time on my other Ubuntu installations. I find it weird. Anyway it's very frustrating when i come across another distro that i really want to try out and i cannot load the iso in the program.

I keep receiving an error that says the com32 image is bad. Anyone else have issues with this or any ideas on how to fix it so I can get a proper installation going?
