Also On Friday 6-24-11 I added a device line to the /etc/fstab so that my CD/DVD device would load up at boat time. I would not think this to be causing the problem. Please advise me on how to get back my regular GUI interface for this Desktop.
I tried to customized my new ISO according to this WIKI URL...Eventually I faced some problems:
1. I had no GUI
2. I could not log in regularly
How can I customize a whole complete Debian ISO with Desktop GUI & all regular features as in the distro?
I have this problem that Xorg CPU usage spikes to between %20-%40, a little more than once every second - constantly. When this happens, everything on the system slows down, video, scrolling through pages, etc. plasma-desktop does the same, at the same time as Xorg, though uses less CPU. Switching off Desktop effects makes no difference. The spikes starts just after KDE is up and running after boot. I'm running 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 release 3, 64bit on a desktop and 32bit on a laptop, both have the same problem. I have searched the internet, but cannot find anything related to this, please help!
My 64bit desktop details is:

View 6 Replies View Relatedhow a way that I can edit the metadata tags on some MP3s using regex?
I've got almost 100 MP3, all named "01 - <song title>," "02 - <song title>," etc., and I, understandably, don't want to edit them all by hand.
Running "s/d{2} - //g" would be so much easier.
Since installing ubuntu 10.10 in january, my Openoffice (it seems mainly calc) regularly crashes. It always manage to keep file recovery active (even it's not always the latest). There is no really identified pattern except basically editing cells
my packages are currently:
ii openoffice.org-base-core 1:3.2.1-7ubuntu1.1 office product
ivity suite -- shared library

I just try to reset my preferences (move $HOME/.openoffice.org to .old) and I will see if it changes something.
I am not sure if i missed a post somewhere, but my search didn't turn up anything. Does anyone know if it is possible to install the Ubuntu Remix on a laptop that doesn't have an Atom processor? I have a small form-factor laptop, but it isn't a Netbook, that I would love to install Ubuntu Remix on, but for some reason it hangs when I try and install it. Does anyone know if it is possible to install this release on a standard laptop? Are there links somewhere that I could follow?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI switched to Kubuntu with the upgrade to Lucid. After a couple updates, I started getting a "Gnome looking" unlock screen on my desktop at start-up. I get the regular KDE keyring password request and a second that looks like the Gnome keyring. I don't know how this happened. I checked in Synaptic and found the gnome-keyring was installed. Can I uninstall this or will that cause problems?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI made a usb install drive on a mac by following the instructions on the ubuntu download page, but had problems getting the GRUB loader to run the USB at boot on the DreamLinux PC i wanted to install it on, so I have now sorted access to a CD writer to make a liveCD.
However I need to convert the USB FDD back to just a regular FDD for my mother to use. I am not at all familiar with Macs, or the terminal utilities (though I am able to use the terminal to some degree) so would appreciate help with this procedure or a pointer to some steps to do it.
Currently the drive is named Ubuntu 10.04 LTS when it mounts on mac, before the img write it was just untitled, I cannot delete the ubuntu files from it or write new ones, and I don't know how to do a reformat on a mac.
I need he drive to be able to work again with windows and mac... so will need to reformat to FAT32 I guess?
I updated my Ubuntu 10.04 on Dell 1330 and on the next boot it failed. I get a series of messages, the main point seems to be that it can't find the files it needs to mount.I tried booting from the live cd I used to install 10.04, but it can't boot either due to wrong user id error and maybe trying to boot from wrong kernel? At this point I am willing to just wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install but how to do that if I can't run the install cd?Or is there a way from initramfs to solve this?I tried mount /dev/sda1/mnt but it says cannot read /etc/fstab no such file.libdevmapper

I could've sworn this website used to have a games section, but I guess I'll just post this here. Is there any way to play Nethack in the regular terminal? View 3 Replies View Relatedi am trying to triple boot xp, osx and Ubuntu. Here is my set up:

I am trying this on a dell precision workstation 530. (yes i know that i can't install regular osx on a non-apple computer, but this is patched and works fine)
My problem: I am using grub to boot everything. I have added osx to the list by this: title mac osx tiger root hd(0,3) kernel boot/boot_v10 when i press this, i get: error 17 can't mount partition.
I did an update during a time when power was cycling due do a nasty snow storm, but I'm pretty sure the update was completed successfully before I lost power. What did happen though is that my BIOS setup was reset.
Now if my HP Laserjet 1020 is plugged into USB during boot all other USB devices freeze for a while. So I played with my BIOS setting for USB:
- Enabled V1.1 and V2.0
- Disabled System USB Shadowing
So now my bootup doesn't hang. But now when I actually go into Karmic I still can't print.
dmesg shows the following:

I have a problem to mount my cdrom as a regular user. After inserting a cd, I receive this error message:"Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:mount: must be superuser to use mount" After mounting the cdrom as superuser with "sudo mount /media/cdrom".I can access the cd also as regular user. This behavior is inconvenient and I would like to be able to mount the cdrom as user.Honestly, I do not have the experience to tell if this should be fine or not. Do you have any advice for me to fix this problem? I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with a 2.6.32-02063209-generic kernel.

I'm using mplayer to watch tv shows, that often have episode numbers in their names. I know how to easily add several files to the playlist by using brackets, by typing something like
$ mplayer tv/South.Park.S1.E0[1-5]*avi
Is there a way to point to files 06-13 in a single expression?
I have GRUB on my laptop with Ubuntu and Windows 7. GRUB and Windows 7 seem to boot just fine, but recently, Ubuntu doesn't boot. My suspected cause is simply because I've often shut down unofficially. My laptop doesn't have a battery, and even the AC connection is awry, so as soon as an accidental disconnection or something occurs (because it too is broken), it'll essentially shut down.
I try booting Ubuntu, and it doesn't boot. I think I see that Ubuntu and the dots page, but it'll hang there (and I waited overnight). Immediately, I want to run an fsck, but I seem to be unable to, so I run Recovery Mode. I always get a forever loop of a bunch of stuff that doesn't make sense to me, but this is one thing that I always see (or something similar).

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed 11.04 64 bit on my Acer Extensa 4420 the other day. It was running 10.04 32bit before. When it booted up the first time it said that it had some video issue and would boot in classic mode. I rebooted and selected the regular Ubuntu and it came up with the side panel buttons. This morning it boots into classic mode and I can't seem to get it back to the regular mode with the side panel buttons! What could be wrong with video settings? When I first ran 11.04 live it came up with the side panel and didn't ask to install any video drivers.
