Aug 15, 2010I have 10.04 with Gnome installed and can change filesystem checks using tune2fs from the command line.
How to create a script for tune2fs and add to the Gnome System menu?

Aug 28, 2009On a Sun Ultra10 333MHz, 512M, 9gB HDD. Booting Fedora-9. Silo v1.4.14 into kernel 2.6.27 64bit (vmlinuz-2.6.27.12-78.2.9fc9.sparc64). This is a brand-new installation.Although it's running on a Sparc it makes v.litte difference so far as this bootprocess, teh way Linux runs, where everything is - is concerned. That's why I've cross posted this query here.Booting merrily, in the interactive startup section just past "Starting udev", "Setting hostname", at "Checking filesystems" I get:

Mar 26, 2011Nothing too major here but today I had a few programs open and was doing a bunch of things and suddenly the system froze.
I am on 10.04 LTS -
Are there checks that I can do to see if everything is ok?
I had to turn the power off and re-booted and everything is fine, or rather, seems to be 100% fine - but more out of curiosity Id like to see if there are some checks that I can do.
I think that ubuntu creates a log of activity if I am not mistaken?

May 19, 2010I have my Media Center running Ubuntu 10.04, and it's annoying to have that "Your disk drives are being checked for errors" message every so often. And ofcourse, as Murphy's law states, it usually happens when I'm in a hurry to quickly watch something.
Ofcourse, I can press 'C' (cancel) all the time. But I guess Ubuntu set up this file check interval for a reason, right? I was wondering if it's save to change the interval so it's less often. Or is it easy to configure the check to occur at SHUTDOWN? That's when most people don't care what the computer does anymore.
Also, although it's a pretty fresh install, any Ubuntu on my machine has never ever ever ever worked flawlessly and neither does this one. More often then not, on shutdown, the computer doesn't shut down but just sits there with a black screen or with the ubuntu logo. So I just power it off. Does this scenario make it unwise to tone down on the number of file checks?

May 18, 2011I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

May 23, 2010This is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).
When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?

Oct 3, 2010Crashed System left at root @ maintenance shell. Below is the sequence after boot, with Exact Errors. How to Salvage important files from my crashed laptop hardware.
A) Via a Transfer to a USB stick in Terminal, would be ok
B) Via SSH through the router from the good laptop that is Preferably using Nautilus / GUI, Terminal also ok (less confident of my skill here)
C) Directly Fixing Laptop and being ably to use Nautilus / GUI to Copy Files to USB stick, localy
The result of some effort:
A) the USB stick is good but Can't get in to it from the crashed laptop
B) SSH: No luck I get: "Cannot display location "sftp://192.168.1.101/"" from the good Machine
C) at a lose here...
The Crashed Laptop is:

CPU: Intel Atom N280 @ 2GHz

A good USB stick reads & writes in another laptop running Ubuntu 9.10. When I connect the USB to the Crashed Machine it starts with:
"assuming drive cashe: write through", and hangs on this tell I press: "Ctrl+C"
In the crashed machine I can't seem to get into the USB anywhere that I think it should show up and trying to "mkdri" got me:
"Read only file system".

So what I did was copying the line of the filesystem I wanted to mount on startup from /etc/mtab:

And pasted it as it is, in the /etc/fstab file. when the system booted, it didn't work. not only that, I wasn't able to mount the filesystem at all, (it gave me some kind of an error) so I removed the line from fstab file and it all back to normal. how can I mount this filesystem on boot? (i'm using Fedora 12)

Ubuntu :: Finding Filesystem Type/repair Broken Filesystem?
Jul 9, 2010I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.

May 15, 2010Ever since my upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4, every time I reboot the system it does a full disk check. /var/log/boot.log tells me that fsck thinks that the file systems contain errors or that it wasn't cleanly unmounted. And yet, it doesn't seem to actually find errors, and a clean reboot starts another check (again with it thinking something is dirty). I dual-boot with Windows, and reboot from there with the same problem.Again, all of this is new with 10.4 and was not happening with 9.10.Is there a way to find out when/how/why the disks are not being unmounted cleanly?

But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?
