My Ubuntu Linux system was switched off at the mains without being properly shut down. When it was restarted again, the file system checks failed and I was presented with the maintenance console command prompt. How do I check what is wrong with the file system. Is there any sort of generic repair command that checks the disk and fixes errors?

Yesterday my computer froze using ubuntu 10.1 so i turned the power off, then back on, now i get this message when trying to boot: error unknown file system Grub Rescue>
I tried fsck from a live CD but it doesn't work.
I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
When I do a forced fsck, I would like to have a log file to look at after boot.
When I check /var/log/ there are no files there with fsck output
I've run force fsck in these ways:
shutdown -rF now
-and-
touch /forcefsck
I downloaded the Fedora 10 DVD installation image and burn it to a DVD.The image was good, I checked the md5 sum. When I put the DVD in the drive and rebooted the text based menu appeared and I chose Install or upgrade. The the installer asked me if I want to check the DVD and I entered Yes.The DVD was checked and it turned out to be fine, but after that when I wanted to continue whit the installation the installer reinserted the DVD but it gave a message saying that it can't find Fedora on any drive .Even if just minutes ago it verified the DVD for integrity. And then it ejected the DVD.If I wanted to press F12 to continue it reinserted the DVD and gave the same message. So I can't continue my installation.
The DVD was fine as you can see, checked by me and by the installer itself. Is the installer asking for a CD?? I thought the DVD was for installing. And even better, that DVD was made whit the exact DVD writer which I use for the installation. So it can't be any incompatibility problem between different DVD ROMs or Writers.
The DVD installation is very important to me, because on that computer there is no internet connection. So the DVD is a solution to install a lot of software and actually use that computer, since yum does not work.
I have three raid volumes, md0, md1, and md2. The weekly raid-check cron always causes md0 and md2 to get checked but never md1.
/etc/cron.weekly/99-raid-check
Volumes md0 and md1 are on the same 8 disks. Volume md0 is a small raid1 across all 8 disks for boot and md1 is a raid5 that occupies the rest of those 8 disks. Volume md2 is a raid5 on a separate set of 6 drives. When I check /var/log/messages* I see that every Sunday md0 and md2 get checked but md1 is never checked. However, when I run 99-raid-check manually, all three volumes get checked. There is clearly something different between how crond runs that script and how I run it, but I can't imagine what that would be.
Does anyone know of an application that continually scans for devices on a network and notifies you if a device connects/disconnects to/from the network? I just want a way of knowing when a computer is connected and when it's not.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have my drives set to run fsck on boot up. This is the default setting for Fedora but if there is a problem it prompts me to run fsck manually. Is there a way to have Fedora just run fsck and fix any errors it finds on boot up?w in Debian distros you can put FSCKFIX=yes in the /etc/default/rcS file to do this. But I can't find the equivalent on Fedora.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI go to bed and my computer is fine and working. I come home from work, no signs of a power outage, and my computer has errors regarding a corrupt disk. Drops to Cmd prompt. My problem is that I want to do the proper recovery on it, and my googling doesn't seem to help. All I see is stuff about how FAST fsck is, but no one wants to talk about how to use it. Besides, I better check with people before I mess everything up.
I have the FC12 install disk I used loaded up now, at the cmd prompt. I have my system mounted, an EXT4 LVM. Do I unmount and then run fsdk.ext4 -fp /dev/mapper/vg_mysys-lv_home ? (lv_home is the one reported as corrupt during boot)
I have been using Ubuntu for a couple of years, and I had some problems that nobody could fix, so I thought I would try Fedora.
If I want to automatically fix errors in Fedora (or Ubuntu) on the next boot the normal method is to type [code] sudo touch /forcefsck at a terminal prompt. In Ubuntu after I boot it up I can see on my computer screen that fsck is running, but with Fedora there is no indication on the screen that fsck is running.
Since I can't see it, how do I know that Fedora is actually running fsck?
I got 2 HDDs, I had created LVM by two of them. When I was trying to install quota it was saying it is better if you run fsck first message. When I tried to run fsck. It warned me that I could lose some of my data. So it happened. Actually it is worse: I can't boot my Fedora 11. When I try to run installer in rescue mode, it says no linux partition find. When I try to install (just to see partitions) it shows LVM volumes of hdds are ok but the partition which is / (root)partition seems in unknown format. How can I save my datas? Or can i restore my partitions, LVM?
View 11 Replies View RelatedUPDATE: This is a bug: [URL] Evidently the problem is with plymouth because a workaround is to add "rd_NO_PLYMOUTH" to the kernel boot options. I don't get a prompt for my disk encyrption pass phrase---just a flashing cursor---but that's a small price to pay for being able to run fsck when the root filesystem wasn't umounted properly.
I have fully updated f13 (as of today) on a laptop with all ext2 file systems (It has nothing but flash memory.) If it's shut down without unmounting all file systems, it drops to a shell and asks for the root password to run fsck when it's rebooted. Every key press is treated as though it were <enter>, with a response to the effect that the password is incorrect.
Is it still possible to use LiveCD to boot into rescue mode and run fsck?
I just want to run fsck on my hard disk and make sure all is well.
Does fsck provide and logs or records of what it found?
Is it possible to run fsck without LiveCD?
I have a problem partitioning an Hard Disk Drive on a server, and I hope someone can help me with this. Here is the system configuration: Operating System Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.30.8-64.fc11.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Sep 25 04:43:32 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

When I try to boot to OpenSUSE I get the following error during boot-up: unknown filesystem type 'reiserfs' could not mount root filesystem - exiting to /bin/sh$
This only started happening quite recently - before this I could boot to Linux quite happily.
I am trying to mount a file image, like this
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps
But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?
I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.
I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSince Slackware does not use PAM where do I go to set password requirements. For instance, in CentOS there is the /etc/pam.d/system-auth-ac file where I can edit the cracklib and pam_unix modules to allow/disallow dictionary checks and min/max password lengths. Where do I go to edit that in Slackware?
View 1 Replies View RelatedEver since my upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4, every time I reboot the system it does a full disk check. /var/log/boot.log tells me that fsck thinks that the file systems contain errors or that it wasn't cleanly unmounted. And yet, it doesn't seem to actually find errors, and a clean reboot starts another check (again with it thinking something is dirty). I dual-boot with Windows, and reboot from there with the same problem.Again, all of this is new with 10.4 and was not happening with 9.10.Is there a way to find out when/how/why the disks are not being unmounted cleanly?

I had to turn the power off and re-booted and everything is fine, or rather, seems to be 100% fine - but more out of curiosity Id like to see if there are some checks that I can do.
I think that ubuntu creates a log of activity if I am not mistaken?
I was just wondering why Ubuntu is always checking my discs for errors. This happens every few times i turn the computer off and back on. Maybe every 2 or 3 times. Is this just ubuntu checking the discs or something to worry about?
