- Floppy menu

How can I get (permanently) rid of these entries ? How can I rename "Home Folder" to "Home" ?
My problem is the links that are in the places menu in the gnome panal, all link to the appearances preferances. I'm running Fedora 14 with Gnome.

I have two Xubuntu machines. On one I upgraded in place, no problem. But the other got messed up so I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 from scratch. I like the new Xubuntu, including changes they've made with this version, but...on the fresh install, the Places menu is missing (see attached).
Places is one really neat feature that my distro had the Windows doesn't; it makes/made life easier for me--I hate to see it just go away. Does anyone know how to bring it back? It doesn't seem to be available under Add New Items (to the panel).
Is there a way to get rid of the floppy entry in the Places? This is not the bookmarks area (which is below) so I can't just right-click and remove or remove it from Bookmarks spot. I already tried commenting the floppy in fstab and then removed the entire line to no avail. Floppy drive is disabled in the Bios, I haven't had a floppy drive in 10+ years.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSomething very strange has happened to my system (Lucid / Gnome / 64 bit): when I try to open a location from Gnome Menu, message pops up saying: "Can't open location [file:///...]. No program is registered to open this type of file." Or something in this vein, I'm translating the message from Polish. So I can't open locations via the main menu, but the bookmarks work fine in an open Nautilus window. It looks like the system doesn't know it should open a location with Nautilus... I looked through file associations in Ubuntu Tweak, but couldn't find anything corresponding to "file:///..." or anything resembling opening a location (I'm not exactly a Linux guru). Also, the folder shortcuts in Cairo-Dock don't work, the same goes for the FolderView screenlets. However, in the MainMenu screenlet, the location shortcuts do work. There has to be some obvious explanation of this anomaly, but I lack a deeper knowledge of the system to work it out. I can't say at which point it started exactly, I think it was around the time I started dragging extra shortcuts to the Cairo-Dock shortcuts applet, but that may be a coincidence.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI see this posted in several places in the past but no answers. If I use UUID in fstab to mount additional partitions I get duplicate entries for the partitions in the Places Menu. I can solve the problem by mounting the partitions by Label ( /dev/sdb2 /mountpoint ) but half of the time grub2 will not mount the drive correctly using this method and will change the volume ID (sdb2 becomes sdf2) .
View 2 Replies View RelatedTake a look at the "screen shot attachment" you will notice that I have multiple listings for the HD - WIN_XP, WIN_7 and GAMES. I was checking out both NTFS CONFIGURATION TOOL and MOUNTMANAGER. I Removed MOUNTMANAGER but the multiple listings remain? How can I make this available from the Desktop instead of the places menu ?
I can't seem to pull it out or copy it to desktop.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm keeping my documents, music, and videos etc. on a separate partition from my home directory, formatted with encrypted fat32 so that I can access it from both my windows and my ubuntu installation. So I've made the folders, transferred the files, and I selected custom icons (by right-click, properties, click on custom icon, then select the file from /usr/share/icons/Humanity/places/4.
So far so good. The problem is that the custom icons don't appear in the Places sidebar in Nautilus or the main Places menu in gnome. It just comes up as a regular folder.
See a screenshot of it here.
Does anyone have an idea/workaround so that I can use my custom icons in the Places menu as well? I have tried it with scalable icons, with no difference. I've also tried looking for a configuration file which might have the details in, but I haven't found it - I suppose this probably has something to do with how the Places menu is automatically generated.

How can I add Home Folder launcher available in the Places menu to the panel?
View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04 (Lucid), GNOME 2.30.2. After some time of correct operation, my dropdown menu from "Places" in the GNOME Panel has gone wrong.
If I click Places and then click on any of the dropdown shown, Home Folder, Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, Downloads, before the horizontal line separator, Banshee launches. Those after the separator, Computer, Floppy and my Hard Drives, launch correctly.
I have tried restoring the Panel to its original setting with no luck.
I was trying to install Sim City 4 Deluxe when somehow through my mounting an un-mounting of the two ISO's nautilus decided to make an entry in the places menu. I've searched through the forums and most of what I'm finding is how to remove things like the network and desktop items.
Here are three screenshots showing what I mean. Number one shows the entry I am talking about, specifically the SC4DELUXE1 entry. Number two shows that just right clicking and selecting remove like many threads suggest does not work here as it is grayed out. Lastly number three, this is the error I'm given when I left click the entry.
I finally figured out how to fix this. I simply went into the disk utility. Under peripheral devices the unwanted device was listed. Click the check file system button after selecting the device. It reports back that the file system is not clean and removes the device.
I have Ubuntu dual-booted with Windows. But whenever I start-up the computer, linux is listed twice! D: Right after I installed it, I was told I needed 200+ MB worth of updates, so I got them, and since then, it's been listed twice in the start-up OS booter thingy. But selecting the one with lower numbers doesn't boot up anything, It just stops at a scary screen with a blinking cursor.
AND, since the beginning, I have never been able to browse folders from the places menu, OR access the Start-up Applications manager. Ubuntu also seems to slow down randomly, and then speed back up. Starting up applications makes it unusually laggy for the period of time that they're starting up, and I'd like to know if Ubuntu is usually so slow on machines like mine...

I also get errors every time I try downloading anything.
