Ubuntu :: Search Based On Nautilus File Type?

Aug 10, 2010

Is there any application that will let me restrict search results, by, for example, whether it is a plain text document or a jpeg image (not by extension, but the same way nautilus knows if something is a jpeg even if it doesn't have an extension)? It would be nice to have an easy way to search for, e.g., just images, just videos, or just music without relying on file extensions.

Ubuntu :: Download Locations Based On File Type?

Jan 17, 2010

Is there a way to set Firefox to place downloaded files in different folders based on the file type?e.g. in my Downloads folder place all .doc files in a sub-folder called ".doc", all .jpgs in a sub-folder called ".jpg"I'd assume there's probably a rule, or a script that can be used to accomplish this, but being a graduate student, I don't have alot of free time to poke around and figure it out myself

Ubuntu :: Script To Rename File Based On Mime Type?

Jan 9, 2011

I have a folder containing the output from Windows XP "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" - the folder refuses to be imported into any flavour of Windows and the original windows system is no more - so I found a little program called fastconv [URL] which extracted all the files but fails to rename them - been working on this solidly for 3 days now, there are 47,000 files in 20gb, so naturally the customer is very concerned.

I noticed that Ubuntu cleverly recognises the type of file, assuming its looking at the contents of the file rather than the extension.

Is there any way I can automatically rename the files based on the mime type?

Debian Multimedia :: File Search In Nautilus Hangs

Jun 26, 2014

As of today I can't seem to use the search feature of Nautilus (in GNOME 3). Say I open my home folder and press Ctrl-F to get the search bar. Whatever I type, as soon as I stop typing and Nautilus should start the search process, it just freezes completely. The cursor stops blinking and that's it, all I can do is run `killall nautilus` from a terminal. According to the System Monitor nothing is really using CPU.

Ubuntu :: Can't Type In Dashboard Search On First Load

Jul 1, 2011

I was wondering if anyone knows why I can't type in the search area in Dashboard search? It feels like it hangs or freezes when I try to load it for the first time during the day, icon shortcuts are also unclickable. I thought it was my keyboard, so I checked if I can type in other programs while Dash stayed open and I can so it's not my keyboard. This problem seems to go away if I exit Dash and try again, but returns maybe an hour later. I think it showed up when I installed Compiz and made a few adjustments.

Ubuntu :: Search In Nautilus Elementary?

Oct 18, 2010

Since update to 10.10 I seriously cannot figure out how to do a normal file/folder search. When I search a file it only shows the last day, month, etc of Zeitgeist.

Not only that but I cannot narrow a search down to a specific folder. I go to Pictures folder, hit Ctrl+F, search term = ground, it no longer just searches the Pictures folder, and I'm looking at 0 results when there is a file named ground.jpg in my Pictures folder..

how to do a simple search in Nautilus? (Elementary)

Server :: A Database Based Search Command?

Jun 10, 2010

I was not in touch with linux for couple of years now. So I forgot a command I used to use. I recently installed Fedora 12 and I can not remember what was that command. Here is what it used to do: I remember that I used to run a special search command on server that used to find a file very fast because it was kind a database based command. To enable it for first time after linux installation, I used to build an index of computer's files and then I could use its command [don't remember if it was "find" or "search"].

So my question if anybody know what I am talking about and what is name of these two commands. How can I build the index first.

Ubuntu :: Changing File System Type To Another Filesystem Type - Does It Effect On Data?

Feb 4, 2011

In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5

previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal

After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data

By doing that

1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.

2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.

Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)

I had very imp data in d:drive

Programming :: Get Program Based On Mime-type In C

Feb 10, 2010

I need to launch programs in my program and the program can be a script, a Linux executable or even a Windows executable. The first thing i tried is to use xdg-open from my program, but i can't pass arguments to it, otherwise it would have worked perfectly. Is there maybe a way to determine which program is set as default according to the mime-type of the program i want to launch? I also tried kfmclient and gnome-open, they don't allow arguments either.

Ubuntu :: Type Path In Nautilus Instead Of Using Buttons?

Nov 1, 2010

I have never posted here because i never cared to read the rules or understanding how the forum actually works. That being said, before 10.04 there was a button on nautilus that let you change the path buttons for a text box so you could type the path you wanted to go. Now that it has been removed how can i get it back? I know you can use control L to get a text box but pressing control L again does not return the buttons.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Determine File Type Of Any Of Video File

Oct 14, 2010

I am writting a script to allow uploading of certain files. I want to limit the files by their filename and mime type, and by making sure the two match up.The first thing I need to do is make sure I've got all the mime types I need added. I have never done this before, but I understand that 'file' (which is what PHP's mime-type finding is based off of) uses magic databases that tell at which point in the file should have signatures of the filetype.

My trouble started when I was unable to determine the filetype of any of my video files. Currently, I have some .MOV and .MP4 files that I am using to test.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Covert Video File To .asf File Type?

Jan 24, 2011

I want to be able to play a video file on my pda(Tungsten T5) but from memory the only video file i have seen playable on it was the asf file that is used when it starts up/reboots. I tried other file types in the past that were suggested in maybe a manual or forum or something but they never worked/played. I think it is because of the player installed and i tried installing another player but from memory that didn't install properly or just did not play anything. So if anyone knows of a way to convert files maybe using winff or mencoder i would love that info. I have been googling and have found nothing specific to what i am asking. I do not see anything in winff to convert to asf and cannot remember ever using mencoder.

I am splitting a file based on the values read from an input file. The below one is the script.

1)How do I add the header which is present in the original file to the new split files created?(For eg. pharmacyf conatins header as table column names. The new files created (ODS.POS.$pharmacyid.$tablename.$CURRENT_DATE.dat) are without the header).

2) Also the script is creating 0 byte files for the pharmacyids which are not available in the intial file? Can this be avoided?

for pharmacyf in *
do
tablename=`echo $pharmacyf |cut -f4 -d'.' `
while read pharmacyid
do
grep -w $pharmacyid $pharmacyf >> $OUT/ODS.POS.$pharmacyid.$tablename.$CURRENT_DATE.dat
