Fedora :: F14 Thunderbird-3.1.6 Crashes On Start?
Nov 3, 2010
Just like this:
Code:
/usr/lib/thunderbird-3.1/run-mozilla.sh: line 131: 10857 Segmentation fault (core dumped) "$prog" ${1+"$@"}
$prog is obviously 'thunderbird-bin'. I guess I should wait for an update?
EDIT: This happens due to a bug in gtk-oxygen-engine.

I have Thunderbird installed and I really enjoy it as an application. I would like to set Thunderbird to start on boot. I tried to locate the binary for it in /usr/bin/ but was not able to. Has anyone done this before or does anyone know how I might go about locating the binary for it?

I just upgraded my laptop from fedora 10 to 12, in spite of all kinds of hassles I am nearly able to use the system. Except I noticed that whenever I connect to the ethernet via NetworkManager, both of firefox(3.5.6) and thunderbird(3.0) won't start a window and there is no error output. The programs just hang there so that I have to kill them explicitly. The strange thing is that if I just disconnect the network then they can start up without problem. I can then reconnect to the network and both of them work fine.

I installed some updates this morning to my F14-64 system. Both Thunderbird and Thunderbird-lightning were updated. Now, Thunderbird won't start at all. The process is running, but no window ever appears.The only thing I've tried at this point is running 'thunderbird -safe-mode' from the command line to disable all plugins, but the result is the same as just running 'thunderbird' -- it just hangs. It doesn't *appear* to be a plugin problem

After upgrading to 10.04, Thunderbird crashes every 20 minutes or so. No mozilla crash reporter pops up... it just dies. No idea why. I filed a bug, but nothing seems to be happening with it. I find it hard to believe I'm the only one experience this level of instability.

I have installed 11.4, and it seems (seemed) to work OK so far. I installed Thunderbird via the opensuse "1 click install". the installation ran smoothly, but now a click on the Thunderbird icon does not activate any mail client; the only success is that Thunderbird icon jumps joyfully and then disappears.

I am using openSuse 11.0 and have installed Thunderbird 3 (MozillaThunderbird-3.0.0-15.1) from the mozilla/openSUSE_11.0 repository of the build service. Thunderbird does not start, upon invoking it I get an instant crash with /usr/bin/thunderbird: line 130: 12025 Speicherzugriffsfehler $MOZ_PROGRAM "$@" (Speicherzugriffsfehler is the german equivalent of "segmentation fault"). I do believe, that this problem is somehow caused by some failed LDAP access.
I am using an LDAP-based user account which causes the behaviour described. For testing purposes I created a local user account, which could start thunderbird 3 without a problem. Starting and stopping nscd did not work, neither did the removal of .thunderbird and .mozilla. Here are the final lines of an strace dump:

I'm on a fresh install (albeit I've kept my former separate /home partition) of 10.04 UNR. Thunderbird (mail client) won't start saying it's already running and I've either to close it before or reboot.
Problem is Thunderbird is not running as also confirmed with the terminal output below Rebooting didn't solve, nor did uninstalling Thunderbird, rebooting and reinstalling.

Tonight I did the usual apt-get update/upgrade and it installed a newer version of Thunderbird.
Synaptic says the version I have is 3.0.5+build2+nobin.
Their is a bug [URL] that refers to an upstream directory which I don't have. Apparently some recent upgrades have produced some kind of circular link. I am not sure whether that is the problem I have but this is supposed to give the answer. Not sure whether it does but here is some terminal output:
kgw@kgw-desktop:~$ ls -ld ~/.*thunderbird*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 kgw kgw 22 2010-04-22 20:48 /home/kgw/.mozilla-thunderbird -> /home/kgw/.thunderbird
drwx------ 3 kgw kgw 4096 2009-12-08 14:34 /home/kgw/.thunderbird
When I click on the Thunderbird icon, there is an item that appears in the bar at the bottom of my screen that says Thunderbird and it produces a tiny vertical bar at the top of my screen that can be dragged into a an application window that is blank.
Oddly, when I asked firefox to send a link (forgetting that thunderbird wasn't working) it popped up the usual box to send an email and let me send it. The main screen of thunderbird still won't start.

Today I received a pop-up from Ubuntuzilla indicating that version 3.1 of Thunderbird was available. So I started Ubuntuzilla and updated Thunderbird to version 3.1, as I did successfully before with previous version updates. The update proceeded normally, without any error. However, now Thunderbird does start. I get the "Starting Thunderbird" in the bottom status bar for a few seconds, then nothing! I checked with Synaptic Package Manager, but it only indicates version 3.0.4

Thunderbird is becoming quite slow. Startup, response to actions and especially the address lookup as I'm typing an email address.
It gets so slow sometimes on my Ubuntu 10.04 laptop that the screen goes dark.
Can anyone know how I can start diagnosing this to figure out what's wrong?
This is TB 3.1.7 on Ubuntu 10.04. Not sure what else to post.

Recently OpenOffice has started crashing on me when loading the program. The splash screen will appear for a moment then the KDE crash handler comes up. Here's what I get when launching from the console:
slomojo@linux-yiyy:~$ ooffice
KCrash: Application 'soffice.bin' crashing...
sock_file=/home/slomojo/.kde4/socket-linux-yiyy/kdeinit4__0
I've tried deleting the .ooo3 directory in my home directory but that doesn't seem to help. Also, I'm running with Sun's JDK in case that makes any difference. I know that OpenOffice was working fine for me immediately after my fresh install of 11.3. I only use OpenOffice once every couple of weeks so I'm not sure if there was a specific update or anything that broke things for me.

VLC had been working well, but after some updates, it crashes after trying to start. When starting from the menu, it puts a slot in the taskbar and has the bouncing pylon for a few seconds, then those disappear. When starting in console, it immediately returns"VLC media player 1.1.7 The Luggage (revision exported)
Floating point exception".VLC starts correctly from console with "strace vlc".I deleted the configuration files "vlc-qt-interface.conf" and "vlcrc" in ~/.config/vlc/, but this made no difference when trying to start VLC.
The system is OpenSuSE 11.3, 32 bit; KDE 4.4.4 release 3; NVIDIA 260.19.29.The problem exists with both VLC versions 1.1.7-1.pm.2.2 from Packman, and 1.1.7-3.1 from Videolan.I suspect this is similar to an Amarok problem described at Amarok Keep Crash and Amarok opens and crashes immediately

I installed libreoffice from the official Debian repository. Even after a clean installation of Debian Jessie, Libreoffice started and ran only once. After that, when LO was started, it gave an error message: "Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module".I installed "canberra-gtk-module." From then on, LO never gave any error message in terminal. The banner flashes across the screen for a moment and then disappears.
I deleted ~/.config/libreoffice folder and started LO again. Each time the command "libreoffice" is run in terminal, it creates the configuration files in ~/.config folder.I created a new user to check if LO would run. It does run when a new user account is created. But the problem keeps coming back.
After uninstalling libreoffice, I tried installing openoffice 4. Even openoffice 4 wouldn't start. The banner would just appear for a moment.

I am getting mad about 10.10. Nothing is working as it should work!
Sound... Ok, system sounds is working. Amarok is working. But it doesn't work in VLC, flash, etc. GNOME: works, but only starts working, when sound is changed.
(No idea, but KCMInit always crashes at start (segm fault)).
What I supposed to do?

When I try to start korganizer from a konsole, I get the following error reply and kontact crashes
<unknown program name>(24450)/: KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server: "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." <unknown program name>(24445)/: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly.
In my newbie mind - there is something wrong with d-bus or similar. I can however start kmail and KAddressBook without problems. The crash of kontact/korganizer first showed up under my (up-to-date) Squeeze system. I then upgraded to "testing" but the situation is the same. I have filed Bug 274661 with the KDE bug tracking system. So far - no answer........

I've been using Ubuntu for quite a while, several years, though several upgrades. Experimented with various things, uninstalled some and various other messy activities. Some things don't work as well as they used to. Sometimes my system crashes, or hangs for a while before coming back. I still get a KDE screen when I shut down, though I attempted to uninstal that desktop. I would like to start over, that is with as little trouble possible to reinstall from scratch. Have to save my user directories, also the directories for my LAMP applications.

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.
