Fedora :: Firefox And Thunderbird Would Not Start Properly

Jan 10, 2010

I just upgraded my laptop from fedora 10 to 12, in spite of all kinds of hassles I am nearly able to use the system. Except I noticed that whenever I connect to the ethernet via NetworkManager, both of firefox(3.5.6) and thunderbird(3.0) won't start a window and there is no error output. The programs just hang there so that I have to kill them explicitly. The strange thing is that if I just disconnect the network then they can start up without problem. I can then reconnect to the network and both of them work fine.

OpenSUSE :: Firefox, "Get Mail" Extension, Thunderbird, And Default Applications / Clicking "Read Mail" Does Nothing?

Aug 1, 2010

- Firefox 3.6.8 (64 bit)
- Get Mail extension (v3.3.4),
- Thunderbird (3.1.1)

Problem:
Clicking "Read Mail" does nothing, whereas clicking "Compose Message" opens Thunderbird as expected. Thunderbird is properly configured under "System Settings > Default Apps > Email Client".

Whereas, switching the default email client back to Kmail results in the Get Mail "read mail" and "compose message" functions properly opening Kmail in both instances.

This problem occurred for me before (when using openSUSE v11.1 and earlier versions of the apps), but I don't recall how I eventually solved it, or whether it was resolved via an update of one of the above apps/extensions. Nonetheless, I'm now confronted by the very same problem again.

Programming :: Firefox Extension To Handle URLs?

Jan 11, 2011

I want to write simple firefox extension / script or anything to change URLs from HTTP to HTTPS for selected websites (e.g. facebook). That thing is actually bypassing some security checks in my network.

Can anyone tell me how to proceed? I can deal with language as far its C++ or Python (something else would just take more time that's all )

Fedora :: F14 Thunderbird-3.1.6 Crashes On Start?

Nov 3, 2010

Just like this:

Code:
/usr/lib/thunderbird-3.1/run-mozilla.sh: line 131: 10857 Segmentation fault (core dumped) "$prog" ${1+"$@"}
$prog is obviously 'thunderbird-bin'. I guess I should wait for an update?

EDIT: This happens due to a bug in gtk-oxygen-engine.

Fedora :: F14: GNOME Won't Launch Firefox / Thunderbird

Jun 8, 2011

Noticed this last night, when I try and launch either Firefox or Thunderbird using the GNOME menu or the quick launch icons, it fails. I am able to launch them both from the command line in a terminal. Other applications seem to launch fine, so I'm at a bit of a loss where to begin taking this apart... I do get a task in the task bar that says "Launching Firefox", but then nothing comes up. The same thing happens with Thunderbird. That task just goes away. Another odd thing - following a reboot the launch buttons work once. If I close them, they won't launch again unless I run them from a terminal window.

Fedora :: Thunderbird Won't Start After Updating Today?

Mar 16, 2011

I installed some updates this morning to my F14-64 system. Both Thunderbird and Thunderbird-lightning were updated. Now, Thunderbird won't start at all. The process is running, but no window ever appears. The only thing I've tried at this point is running 'thunderbird -safe-mode' from the command line to disable all plugins, but the result is the same as just running 'thunderbird' -- it just hangs. It doesn't *appear* to be a plugin problem

Fedora :: Thunderbird No Longer Switches To Firefox On Embedded Link

Jun 15, 2010

I just recently installed F13 with Thunderbird 3.0.4 and Firefox 3.6.3 and have noticed that when I click on an embedded web link in a message that it no longer switches app windows to FireFox. On F12 if I did the above the focus would switch to Firefox once a new tab was opened and the site was accessed. Now the focus remains on the message and the tab for Firefox on the bottom panel just flashes. Is there a way to get the old behaviour back? I've checked both apps preferences as well as gnome's preferred apps but nothing changes. I am using the same profile folders from F12 as well as all of my app settings in /home.

Ubuntu :: Wget Failed Urls Output / Log The Urls That Have Failed?

Jan 22, 2010

I'm using wget to retrieve a long list of URLs, a small proportion of which fail, hence:

Code:
wget --input-file=urls.txt
Is there a way to log the urls that have failed? Unfortunatley wget does not output the current URL being processed (and then the status), so hard to see grepping the output helping.

Or should I use some alternative like curl, wmget?

I have installed 11.4, and it seems (seemed) to work OK so far. I installed Thunderbird via the opensuse "1 click install". the installation ran smoothly, but now a click on the Thunderbird icon does not activate any mail client; the only success is that Thunderbird icon jumps joyfully and then disappears.

Ubuntu :: Firefox On Top When Clicking Links From Other Apps?

Apr 23, 2010

Clicking on a web link in an application used to open Firefox in the foreground, on top of the calling application in previous versions of Ubuntu (i.e. whatever versions of applications shipped by default).

In Ubuntu 10.04 if I click on a link in an email message then it opens the page within Firefox 3.6.3, but leaves Firefox behind the calling application. I would prefer to have Firefox take the focus and load the web page on top of my email. I have tried the usual fixes (setting browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground and disabling the Ubuntu extensions), but I can not make Firefox take the focus. Funnily enough, most of the threads I see refer to preventing Firefox from opening on top.

Firefox 3.6.8 is freezing whenever I click a menu item. It locks up for about 25 seconds before continuing. It does this even in safe mode, or if all the addons and extentions are disabled. I have even tried deleting and creating a new profile. Chrome works fine. Also, on another login account, firefox is working fine!

Ubuntu :: Firefox - Mouse Randomly Stops Clicking?

Jan 6, 2011

some windows fail to react to my mouse clicks (left and right). This has been starting to happen more and more often. However, one window usually stays working normally, while all others fail. Usually, it's the gnome-panel, but one time, this happened to Firefox. During this, I discovered that clicking a window above firefox, would go through the window, and Firefox would recieve it instead, as if the window wasn't there. Even stranger, firefox was not the active window, and all keyboard and mouse commands were received perfectly, however, the window titlebar wouldn't darken as usual. I can still move the mouse around, but when I keep it still for a minute, I see "View your Appointments and Tasks", pop-up, but it sticks to the screen afterward. A reboot fixes this problem, but only for a while. his also occurs when booting from the live Ubuntu 10.10 i386 Desktop Edition CD. I'm using a Logitech Mouse, but I don't believe this has to do with hardware, since this doesn't happen on Windows.

Fedora Networking :: Can Resolve Some URLs But Not Others?

Dec 29, 2009

Over the weekend I upgraded my home PC from Fedora 9 to Fedora 12, and now I'm having problems connecting to the Internet. Basically, I am able to connect to some URLs but not others, and it happens in both Firefox and Konquerer. I am able to connect to url, url, url and url with no problems. However, when I try to connect to slashdot.org, url, fedoraforum.org and rpmfusion.org I can not. All the other Windows PCs in my home using the same 2Wire home portal are able to get to the sites using IE with no problem.

I first suspected a DNS issue, but the "host" command returns a valid IP address for all the URLs that I can not reach. Another symptom is that the following command

Code:
su -c 'rpm -Uvh url. url
(from rpmfusion.org/Configuration/) also doesn't work when entered at the command prompt. However, when I did "host download1.rpmfusion.org" and edited the command to use the IP address returned instead of "download1.rpmfusion.org" it worked. But then, the next time I ran "yum" it failed because it couldn't find the rpmfusion.org URL in the installed repository entries.

After reading some other threads, I tried disabling avahi-daemon, but that had no effect. I also tried examining /var/lib/dhcpd and /var/lib/dhclient, but neither file existed on my system.

Fedora :: Firefox Does Not Start On F14 / What To Do?

Feb 23, 2011

I'm relatively new to Linux and am currently working with my first installation from scratch . Fedora 14 was the latest available at the time I started my project.

Over the last couple of days I've been running across a couple of different issues. The last change I made before seeing these issue was to install samba. I can't say for sure that this is the cause of these issues.

Just to be clear, I did have Firefox working until last week.

Problem: Starting Firefox does not open a browser window.
----------
I'm try to start Firefox by clicking on the icon in the upper panel. This action displays a small black circle showing progress and a tab with 'Starting Firefox' on the lower panel. After a few seconds they disappear and nothing happens; no browser and no error messages either.

I looked in a few different places, which I thought were appropriate /var/log/messages, dmesg but I found these provide information about hardware.

Also tried invoking Firefox from the command line but it seems that this mode is not recommended in Fedora and throws out errors in both user and root mode. Doc with errors attached.

Listing 1 shows the error when calling firefox as user.

Listing 2 shows the error when calling firefox as root.

Listing 3 shows all the processes running in the system. (including in case it's useful).

I have tried reinstalling firefox, and removing and installing firefox using yum (yum lists reinstall as a separate option) but neither method resolves the issue.

Fedora :: Firefox Won't Start / Solution For This?

Feb 14, 2011

I recently installed Fedora 14. Yesterday, the update tool found 367 packages to update.

Before the update, Firefox worked fine.

After the update, firefox fails on startup with a series of python errors, apparently ultimately due to the error:

ImportError: /usr/lib64/python2.7/lib-dynload/selectmodule.so: undefined symbol: _Py_ZeroStruct

Any solutions to this short of reinstalling everything?

Fedora Installation :: Firefox Won't Start From Desktop

Oct 7, 2009

This is a new install of fedora 11 with Neville NewGuy at the controls. I cannot start Firefox from the desktop. Nothing happens (at all, nada, nix, zilch). When I run Firefox in a TermSess as su i get the following warning:

(firefox:3168): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
None of the authentication protocols specified are supported.

and a GUI error box An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Firefox. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.

Followed by these details Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)

But Firefox starts OK. I checked the URL specified and then made sure the nfslock service was started but I can't find a gconf service (should I have found it??).

Fedora Networking :: Firefox Won't Start With Trickle

Jan 16, 2010

The following page suggests that trickle should work with Firefox for controlling up/download bandwidth, but I can't get it to work. Attempting to launch it via the shell script or directly with the firefox executable

trickle -d 128 -u 56 firefox
trickle -d 128 -u 56 /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.6/firefox

fails; firefox just never comes up. Both wget and ktorrent work with limited bandwidth via a similar command, although ktorrent always crashes after a short while (only with trickle), so trickle itself would seem to be okay. I'm running Fedora 12, up to date via yum, with kernel.org kernel 2.6.32.2. I think I must be missing something obvious, but I thought I'd ask if anyone else has this working before beating on it for too much longer.

By the way I am using Fedora 11 32-bit. This happend on both the beta firefox that came with it originally and the 3.5 final. I am using the current adobe flash player. All this is from the repos with the system up to date.

OpenSUSE :: Cannot Launch URL From Thunderbird 3.04b To Firefox

Nov 14, 2009

This is a fresh install of 11.2 KDE-4.3.1.

After reviewing all of the 11.2 Milestone 64-bit DVDs, Milestone 1 - 8 - I was always able to launch Firefox from Thunderbird in search of add-ons or an html link.

It stopped working in RC1, RC2.

I thought this was resolved for openSUSE 11.2. The problem still exists!

Now, thinking the problem was with Thunderbird 3.0.4b. I navigated to Configure Desktop --> Personal Settings --> General --> Default Applications:

Changed Email Client from KMail to Thunderbird

From within KMail I can launch Firefox. However, Thunderbird 3.0.4b does NOT launch Konqueror nor Firefox 3.5.4 !!

In addition the Thunderbird 3.04b Help does NOT work.

Could the setting of Default Applications be broken in KDE-4.3.1 " release 6 " ??

I'm sure I cannot be the only one experiencing this at home???
